In South Dakota:

South Dakota lawmakers have proposed changing the state’s concealed weapons law to allow permits to all legal residents, weeks after an immigrant living in Sioux Falls sued the state.

A handful of lawmakers from both parties introduced a bill Tuesday to make that change. The group includes Senate Republican Leader Russell Olson, who signed onto the bill after saying earlier this month that he didn’t see a need to change the law.

This is making the rounds but I wouldn’t count on it:

“I am pleased to report that all branches and offices within ATF have given the official okey dokey to eliminating the CLEO signature requirements for NFA Forms. This includes Counsel’s office and the National Sheriffs’ Association! The package has been sent on to the Department of Justice with recommendation for approval. The package will include:

1.Elimination of CLEO signature requirement.
2.Institution of CLEO “notification” similar to an FFL application. (A copy of the form will be sent to the CLEO as opposed to asking for permission.)
3.Trusts and LLC’s and corps will still be available for use.
4.In the event of #3, a NICS check will be required when the weapon is physically transferred.
Unknown is whether the Citizenship Compliance form will be eliminated and merged into the various NFA forms instead of being a separate nuisance. ATF is leaning toward elimination.”

The NFATCA has been working for several years to make this happen. I am proud to say that we have pushed this agenda item further with better results than we ever have before. ATF and its various branches have reviewed all of the potential issues and suggestions that we have presented. At this point, ATF has actually submitted the issue to the Department of Justice for final approval. We have never been able to get this issue out of ATF’s “universe” before. At this point, it could be a matter of weeks or months before we receive final approval. I am hoping that the timing of the November release of several updated NFA forms is a good coincidence. That was the long answer. The short answer is yes, the process is in full swing.

I didn’t watch. I didn’t really have a desire to see Obama kick off his 2012 campaign with a bunch of pie in the sky that he won’t do. I didn’t watch the rebuttal either, though I did hear a few minutes of it this morning on the local affiliate of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy. It was a good speech about liberty and cutting spending and cutting government. And then I remembered Oh, he’s a Republican. So he’ll support those ideals as long as he’s in the minority.

Nothing, if they’re done right. In this particular case, I was talking about the Ruger MKIII’s which is just a horrible design. It inconveniently protrudes and is a hideous color. I have loaded chamber indicators on a Para LDA and a Smith and Wesson M&P9. And they’re good designs. But I don’t use them.

I don’t buy the ‘any added complexity invites mechanical failure’ argument for a modern firearm.

I don’t buy that either but I have binary mentality when it comes to guns. If you want it to go bang, pull the trigger. If you do not want it to go bang, keep your boogerhook off the bangswitch. Anything else is extraneous fluff that I don’t want to be bothered with. Like TD said Is gun. Is not safe. Oh and stop touching it.

the overly excitable hack Matthews says that’s coming in a separate speech. Seems Obama is saving it for his smaller audience, to maybe shore up a base. It is rough to be “progressive” these days. Their guy has made minimal progress on their goals so maybe he’s throwing them a bone. Who knows.

As a practical matter, yes. I don’t know that not obeying the house rules would convince any court to overturn a law, as I don’t know if courts concern themselves with legislative rules. That said, folks are up in arms about this video which is supposed to show that the 1986 machine gun ban did not really pass the House:

The action starts at the 8 minute mark. I can’t tell, honestly. Watching it twice, it’s hard for me to figure out what’s going on. Several pages of discussion at arfcom on the issue. Honestly, it’s mess and I can’t tell what happened.

The WaPo: Parroting Brady Campaign studies as facts. Per NSSF’s latest data, that’s a pretty small number. I have two years data and SWAGed the third year at a low 10M to get the percentage (see, I can do ‘studies’ too) and that’s underwhelming 0.19% for three years. And that’s not counting person to person transfers. And, given that many likely were due to lost paperwork and not lost guns, it’s an inconsequential number. And the bozos at the NYT wonder why the NRA uses its influence to prevent politically motivated studies.

Also, since it’s unlawful for the feds to maintain a registry, it’s really a moot point how many are lost.

This is a very common practice; gun manufacturers and importers regularly work with BATFE as the firearm industry’s regulatory agency.
