complainant = some guy on the internet
Odd tale about how a blog post made someone a complainant.
Second Amendment Does Not Extend to Possession of Firearm in Furtherance of Drug Trafficking
Airsoft guns are not arms. I think a case could be made that they’re good for practice. But doubt that would pass muster in courts.
It’s here. Reading now. Not really a ruling, more a study. Via Caleb.
Updates as I read:
Misuse term assault rifle.
Competition not sporting purpose, nor are many lawful activities common in the sporting use of firearms. Plinking is not sporting
They’re looking into it:
Therefore, the working group believes that a more thorough and complete assessment is necessary before ATF can consider practical shooting as a generally recognized sporting purpose.
AWB features used to determine ‘sporting’. Added light rails and such as well. And weight and size limits. Odd.
Fiber optic sights? For serious?
Those features can lead to ban on importation:
The purpose of section 925(d)(3) is to provide a limited exception to the general prohibition on
the importation of firearms without placing “any undue or unnecessary Federal restrictions or
burdens on law-abiding citizens with respect to the acquisition, possession, or use of
firearms….”Our determinations will in no way preclude the importation of true sporting
shotguns. While it will certainly prevent the importation of certain shotguns, we believe that
those shotguns containing the enumerated features cannot be fairly characterized as “sporting”
shotguns under the statute. Therefore, it is the recommendation of the working group that
shotguns with any of the characteristics or features listed above not be authorized for
importation.
Obama intentionally did not mention gun control in his State of the Union, but aides say that in the next two weeks the administration will unveil a campaign to get Congress to toughen existing laws.
My guess is a push on requiring states and .gov agencies to report more. More people on more lists. And to push background checks on all sales. We’ll see.
I’m guessing with the overt Republican complicity in gun control lately that they might get a bill through. Could be a good thing to attach some pro-gun bills to as well if this thing actually gets some momentum.
Some dude at Salon: Guns cost more lives than they save
And he has all sorts of facts and figures to back that up. Oh, wait, no he doesn’t.
From Ask a Korean. This bit is interesting:
it is eminently possible to eradicate guns from a society — even in a society where nearly every single adult men are familiar with guns (during their military service.)
No, it’s not.
In Tucson:
We’re hearing more from one of the mass shooting victims who ended up under arrest himself.
J. Eric Fuller ended up in psychiatric custody, after making threatening comments a week after the shootings that killed six and wounded 13 including him.
Fuller says he meant no harm when he pointed a camera at a Tea Party activist and said, “you’re dead”. He says he was trying to make a point about how easy access to guns, makes it easy to kill.
Joyce Foundation shill sorta starting to get it:
Gun control policies should focus on restricting access to firearms for dangerous individuals or repeat offenders rather than making guns illegal, a prominent gun policy scholar told a group of public health students on Tuesday.
And this:
“This discussion has gotten us to where we are today, which is nowhere,” said Webster, who has served as an informal adviser to Baltimore Police Commissioner Frederick H. Bealefeld III. “We get in these silly sorts of discussions about guns are good, guns are bad.”
Of course we do. Some folks are trying take our guns. They’re failing but they are trying.
Continuing with the NY theme today:
A New York City man filed a lawsuit this month seeking $400,000 in damages after a pair of police officers mistook his cigarette break for a suicide attempt.
Mark Moody, a 40-year-old trial lawyer, was sitting on the window sill of his second-floor apartment, smoking a cigarette back in August when he says a police car stopped in front of his building. One of the officers got out and asked him if he was trying to commit suicide.
That warranted ambulances, four more police cars and being taken to psych ward for evaluation.
Knights Armament tells people not to take pictures of their stuff. At a show where people go to show their stuff so that people can take pictures of it. But there’s still pictures of their stuff there.
In NYC, a bill to fine you for crossing the street while using mobile electronic devices.
The Firearm Blog has been bought by GunsForSale.com. Steve will still be the author. Pretty interesting to see online industry retailers getting in the blogging game.
They mostly don’t make sense. But here’s a good read on why some cartridges have the name they do.
There’s an app for that. I look forward to the day where I don’t carry debit or credit cards and stuff is located on a secure device that folks cannot access and that I can wipe remotely.
Math dictates that loaded chamber indicators do cause a higher failure rate in firearms. A lot more here.
David Hardy looks at the 86 bill, which is either the greatest bill ever or the worst bill ever depending on which gun nuts you’re talking to.
Eventually, we’ll all be on one:
GOP to look at federal gun laws
Thanks, GOP.
Staffers from the House Judiciary Committee will meet with Obama administration officials Thursday to examine the effectiveness of federal laws designed to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill, according to a Republican aide with the panel.
The closed-door gathering will focus on whether a federal system of background checks is working to block gun sales to the mentally ill and others barred from owning firearms, the aide said Tuesday. Staffers from both parties will attend, as well as officials from the FBI and possibly the Justice Department, the aide added.
And if they’re not effective? Which they’re not. Also, considering the Mayors Against Guns proposal to require states to report domestic violence, mental records, and drug use to the NICS database. They tried that unfunded mandate stuff before and it didn’t work. Also, this is scary:
Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY), come on down. Earlier this week, Mr. Schumer proposed that federal officials who learn of an individual’s illegal drug use must report that information to the FBI. The admission would then go into a federal database, and be used to deny the individual the right to purchase a gun.
Soon the .gov will be restricting all manner of things based on what list you’re on.
Border agent fired for saying legalizing drugs would end border violence. In casual conversation.
Bad ass:
I’ve not mentioned it in a while but for you folks who want to follow me on the Facebook, the page is here. And for you twitterers (which I don’t get), I am here.
Nothing new there, just the same stuff. But some people prefer facebook and twitter.
The president not mentioning gun control is apparently big news, to the dismay of the press and the anti-gunners (but I repeat myself). We’re winning.
Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
