Unfortunate name for unfortunate cause

In my never ending quest for scientific research, I decided to Google up images of Marci Milfs to see if she lives up to her name. And if she’s offended by sexually charged books then she should never do that.

The Knoxville News Sentinel prints the Campos compost

Uber liberal editor of the Knoxville News Sentinel Jack McElroy prints the “you don’t need guns because America is so safe” liberal fantasy from Professor Paul Campos of the University of Colorado.

What Glenn Reynolds is to conservatives Paul Campos is to extremist liberal fanatics. I had a brief post on Der Professor Campos on SayUncle last week.

What do you make of a person who first writes, “The ongoing overreaction to the 9/11 terrorist attacks is only the most vivid example of how our leaders cynically exploit our fears by making wildly exaggerated claims, such as that Islamic terrorism poses an “existential threat” to America.” Then Professor Campus follows that inane derangement with this, “we should be more afraid of having our children stolen from us by Republicans than by kidnappers.”

Only Jack McElroy would find any value with Paul Campos’s disjointed ramblings.

TN Politicians Breaking Law

You know, one they passed.

A while back, TN’s congressmonkies passed a law banning smoking in the workplace and before that they banned smoking in state buildings. But for them, not so much:

The I-Team has discovered that some state lawmakers may not be abiding by a law meant to affect all Tennessee residents.

Everyone, including the thousands of state workers in Nashville, have to walk outside to specified areas if they should want to smoke.

State law prohibits smoking inside state buildings, but for those who want to skirt the law and know the right people, there’s a room upstairs for them.

And our local Blount County boy is allegedly in on the law-breaking:

According to an I-Team report, those who want to get around the smoking ban inside Legislative Plaza need to know state Rep. Joe McCord, R-Maryville, and if they’re really connected, they will be invited back to a room set up for smoking.

Whacky looking shotgun

Even More Unpossible

In a state with draconian gun control, there is a prison. And that prison has a policy of no guns, of course. And they have searches of everyone that goes in. I mean, it’s prison so security is tight.

So, it’s odd that they’d find a gun there.

Property Rights

Seen at David’s:

One man’s pride in and loyalty to his Confederate flag has landed him in a free-speech fight with his employer, who doesn’t want it displayed on company property.

To which David opines:

We’ve had the discussion about gun in cars on company property. This appears to closely parallel the issues raised there.

For some, the Confederate flag is a sign of heritage–for others, a symbol of oppression. What if it’s something else–a different message?

It’s not really that close. In NC, if you had a gun in your car and your employer did not approve, that is a crime. Your employer cannot have you arrested for your Confederate flag unless you refused to leave the property when told to do so. Then, it would be mere trespassing. A bit different.

Unpossible

A gun fight in Australia could not have happened because they have all that gun control.

Warning label troubles

Wal-Mart confuses it’s shotgun with an air gun?

Assault weapons hysteria over weapons that weren’t covered by the assault weapons ban

In Philly, Mayor Nutter has to find a scapegoat for the failure of his city to get its murder rate under control. That scapegoat must be Bush, The NRA and Congress. The local press keeps shitting its pants over assault weapons or assault rifles. They use the terms interchangeably.

The police officer was shot with an SKS rifle. Said rifle was neither banned nor regulated by the now expired ban on weapons that looked like assault weapons. But we can’t have facts getting in the way of our opinions.

I’d have gone with the gun first

Taser didn’t work but the gun did.

Lemme ‘splain

See, traffic coverage on TeeVee is kinda dumb. Because if I’m in front of a TeeVee, I’m not in traffic. And if I’m in traffic, I’m not in front of a TeeVee. In that same vein, an RSS Twitter feed for traffic doesn’t sound particularly useful.

Well, unless you have internet access on your phone or something but you shouldn’t be doing that and driving.

The lies they tell

I’ve not read the rest of The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Ownership president Paul Helmke’s latest because the first sentence is utter bullshit:

When we talk about making it harder for dangerous people to get guns, we usually focus on felons, domestic abusers and the dangerously mentally ill.

You never talk about making it harder for dangerous people to get guns nor do you focus on felons, domestic abusers and the dangerously mentally ill. Rather, you try making it harder for all people to get guns and focus on everyone.

walking stick v. mountain lion?

Yeah, they’re just largish cats but I’d rather have a 45ACP than a piece of wood.

Quote of the Day

A timely reprint:

PGP on Hillsy and Barack Saul Hudson Obama pandering to gun owners:

It’s like watching two Klansmen argue over which one likes minorities more.

Gun Buyback Gives IOUs totaling $170,000

Heh:

“One Less Gun” was the name of a huge gun buyback held in Oakland recently. So many weapons were turned in that Oakland Police ran out of cash and had to issue vouchers, or IOU’s to hundreds of people. Some say the event was a huge success, but others believe it was all a big waste of time and money.

Criminals are not turning in their guns. And:

“Two cars in front of me when we pulled in, four guys got out and starting unloading literally boxes filled with guns,” said Kerns. “At one point, a guy was walking up and down the line of cars saying ‘If anyone has an assault rifle, I’ll give you $300 for it. Don’t take $250, I’ll give you $300.'”

Bling

Courier-Journal on the NRA convention:

More than 70,000 gun enthusiasts are expected at the May 16-18 convention, which the NRA decided four years ago to hold here.

Mayor Jerry Abramson said the city and its hotels, restaurants and stores stand to get an economic boost of $15 million to $20 million from the gathering.

So, if the Brady Campaign held an event there, how many people and how much bling would they bring in?

Conclusive

Linked before to the cop who had the magazine in her AR backwards. There was some disagreement about whether or not it was. Well, I found a better pic and am now almost 100% certain that magazine is in backwards.

Here’s the pic.

Scott Bach Interview

Our 2AB blogger interviews NRA Director Scott Bach. He will be at the convention and hanging out with the bloggers at the Second Amendment Blog Bash. You are going, aren’t you? It’s next week!

WordPress Issues

Not a big fan of the new wordpress. Categories are at the bottom. Navigation sucks. And I just noticed that my Pages are now gone. That means no more legalese and contact info on the right sidebar. Now, I gotta try track that crap down.

Excellent Idea

Alan Korwin notes:

Bass Pro Shops will be the title sponsor for “Media Day at the Range” for the next three years.

The fourth annual Media Day at the Range, scheduled for the day before the SHOT Show, will be on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, at the Orange County Sheriff’s Range in Orlando. This event gives outdoor journalists the opportunity to handle and shoot new products from leading manufacturers.

Good. Now, why limit it to outdoor writers? After all, if you take regular reporters shooting, they may come back enlightened. As Robb noted:

The people that Mrs. Zaher met are not part of the violence that plagues this nation. It doesn’t matter how many guns they own, what caliber they are, their rate of fire, ease of use, or how they look – none of those people contribute to crime and therefore there is no reason to limit their access to weaponry.

I wish more journalists would take up the offers to head to the range or at least learn a bit about firearms.

So, here’s my offer: Any of you local media sorts who want to head to the range, drop me an email. I’ll make time. email me at:

Update: A local reader and certified NRA instructor has also volunteered to help.

My sign has no spell check

Nom de blog

Note sure why, but quite a few folks picked up on that post. Aunt B., Jed, ColtCCO, and Les.

Someone showing up at your door for crap you said on the internet is frightening.

Say Les: If you assume most people won’t know who you are you’re more likely to blog about topics you wouldn’t otherwise, to reveal details you shouldn’t, or to behave in a manner or tone that you wouldn’t if your words were attached to your name for all the world to see.

Could be. If I blogged freely under my name, I’d probably make fewer dick jokes. But otherwise, not much would change.

And funny story about ColtCCO. Years back, I knew him and he knew me. Only, he knew me as 1) a customer at his gun shop and 2) his girlfriend’s boss. And Tam kinda knew me then too. But neither of them knew me as SayUncle. Anyway, Les organized some blogger shoot at Coal Creek Armory and I went. I was hanging out, staring in the counter and in walked Les. I said Hey, Les. And ColtCCO said You know Les? I explained that I did. Then I told him I’d let him in on a secret. And told him my nom de blog. And I think his jaw hit the ground. Now that was funny.

NYT: OMG! The laws apply in NYC too!

An NYT idiotorial:

It is remarkable how many people are willing to help illegal gun sellers.

Well, let’s start off with a big fat lie. The suit you’re about to discuss involves suing the makers of a lawful product.

Last week, in a particularly wrongheaded ruling, a federal appeals court threw out New York City’s longstanding lawsuit intended to rein in illegal gun sellers.

Oh no! A court upheld the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act!

In 2000, New York City sued gun manufacturers and wholesalers claiming that they had knowingly flooded illegal markets with weapons. The goal was to force them to do a better job of monitoring the dealers they sell to.

Actually, their goal was to bankrupt. And I hope they counter sue.

Another violence policy center study

Misleading? You don’t say.

Evan Nappen takes on the Violence Policy Center’s claim that Pro-Gun States Lead the Nation in Per Capita Firearm Death Rates:

The VPC dares not look at the bottom seven states instead of the arbitrary five. That is because, lo and behold, New Hampshire ranks seventh from the bottom in per capita gun deaths. New Hampshire is undeniably a strong pro-gun state that greatly respects the individual right to keep and bear arms.
