Quote of the day

Tam in comments here:

It’s sad that the only way to make them act like Republicans is to have them in the minority.

Kinda like the only way to keep Democrats from wild foreign military adventures is to keep them out of the White House.

I guess we can add detaining terror suspects to the list to.

But we still have hope

Seems that we can, now, officially bid farewell to change. But maybe folks still have hope. No change:

Open Carry Victory

In VA:

It’s legal to wear a gun on your hip in Waterside, a judge decided Tuesday.

After hearing more than two hours of testimony, a General District Court judge dismissed a trespassing charge against Dan Moore, a Hampton resident who police said was ordered to leave Waterside for carrying a weapon, and refused to leave.

State laws permit openly carrying firearms in public places. City officials contended that Waterside, though built in part with public funds, is owned by a private entity and thus is a private facility not subject to state laws.

Can’t blame them

Utah is looking at making their carry permits harder for out of staters to get. I’m not sure that’s throwing folks under the bus so much as other states are threatening to end reciprocity with Utah over their rather lax requirements.

Shelby Co. Mayor: Need more gun control

So reports the privacy rights invading Commercial Appeal here:

Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton, in a push to increase public safety, has called for a statewide gun-offender registry and tougher penalties for people who carry handguns without permits.

In his annual State of the County address to the Rotary Club on Tuesday, Wharton unveiled a flurry of ideas to reduce violent gun crimes, including state legislation that would make it a felony instead of a misdemeanor for first-time offenders who illegally carry guns.

Let’s make it illegaler.

More on Gillibrand

I said I thought it was spin from the NYT. David Codrea thinks otherwise.

Still Standing

I mentioned I received Brian Doherty’s Gun Control on Trial: Inside the Supreme Court Battle Over the Second Amendment. Still reading. And you should read it too. Another interesting bit to me was the issue of standing. Seems the courts were scuttling the case, much to the almost anger of Gura. Turns out Dick Heller saved the case by actually going to DC’s gun control office to try to register a handgun. He did so knowing it was pointless. Turns out, no one else in the case had standing because they had not been aggrieved by the .gov. Heller said that the officer at the gun control office knew what was going on because has Heller left, the officer responded with Good luck with your case, Mr. Heller. Others reportedly tried to register handguns after and weren’t even given forms. And the officers on duty refused to sign something saying they refused to give the forms. And the officers turned their badges backward so that those trying could not get their names or badge numbers. Seems someone figured out what was going on but only after Heller had received his denied request.

Amazing that the case hinged entirely on that one seemingly meaningless act.

NRA Stuff

Gearing up for board elections. So, a few things.

Over at SIH, there is discussion of composition and number of board members. And they’ll be issuing board endorsements soon.

Meanwhile, Joseph P. DeBergalis, Jr. is running for board. He and George K. Kollitides are endorsed by ar15.com, who want to get more black rifle people in positions of power at NRA. Good time to see the influence of internet activists on board decisions.

Speaking of George K. Kollitides, you’ll recall my past coverage of him here. Long and short is that he is (was?) managing director of Cerberus Capital Management, a firm buying up several gun manufacturers. They also own Chrysler*. Mr. Kollitides ran for board last year and was unsuccessful.

In the latest issue of NRA’s American Rifleman, there was a puff piece on Mr. Kollitides and his company Freedom Group International. I’m not sure if FGI is a subsidiary or spin-off of Cerberus. I can’t find a website for them. But it appears this is the name that Cerberus’ gun group is operating under. Not certain the significance of that but found it curious. Anyway, seems the NRA is wanting Kollitides on the board or they wouldn’t be doing such a piece in their magazine, particularly when people have told me that Mr. Kollitides does not do interviews. Anyway, here’s his website and his list of endorsements is impressive.

Note that I don’t think there’s anything nefarious about NRA plugging the guy. Probably good politics to bring an equity fund guy on board.

* Coincidentally, the latest American Rifleman contains a review of the new Dodge Ram.

Update: Joseph P. DeBergalis, Jr. also endorsed by New York State Rifle & Pistol Association

PSH Alert

A drill team member was suspended from school for having a replica rifle in her car. You know, those replica rifles that drill teams march with. Yeah, those.

Meanwhile, college laundry room shut down, dorm swept, and bomb-sniffing dogs called because a loose 45 round was found. The original article contains this bit of reporting:

According to Sgt. Dennett, a student found the bullet in the washing machine while doing his laundry. 45-caliber bullets are used in assault weapons such as handguns, not larger weapons like hunting rifles.

Ok, then.

I’m not so sure that’s a fair assessment. I think it’s more like the Paper of Making Up The Record is attempting to pressure Gillibrand to soften up on guns.
