I, for one, blame the pomegranate lobby

They do seem popular lately. I’ve always enjoyed them myself. Now that they’re popular, they’ve doubled in price at the local grocery store. And there’s all kinds of pomegranate juices these days. Here’s a handy tip on how to prepare them.

Also, don’t rule out the juice you buy at the store. Mix a bit of juice with vodka for Pometini (yummy) and (my favorite for a refreshing summer drink) is to mix some juice with a bit of vodka, a little sugar, and some carbonated water over ice for a pomegranate spritzer. Garnish with an orange slice.

Rah, rah, rah . . . go team fight

So we’re clear, I need to address something. When I say something to the effect of gun owners should get on the same page or support the NRA because they’re the only group that actually has political muscle, I’m not saying do only that. Nor am I saying that we ought not be critical. I am saying that we should remember that we’re on the same team. And that’s about it.

I’m reminded of this by Sebastian who notes:

I have been harsh on other gun rights groups lately, but not because I have any problems with their goals, but because they are actively engaged in undermining other gun rights groups out there, particularly the NRA.

Different groups have different goals and different strategies. As Joe said in comments:

I’m not convinced that “the same sheet of music” is the best way to accomplish things. For example, the JPFO can say things that the NRA can’t–guns as a defense against tyranny for example. And the NRA can address hunters issues better than the JPFO. That doesn’t mean that the NRA can’t support the same issues at the JPFO. It just means that one or the other is in a better position to “take point” on an issue. As long as the groups don’t stab each other in the back or get into public quarrels there shouldn’t be a problem. They need to have “back channels” of communication and coordinate some. Even if they don’t agree on the best way to address something they can say, “Okay, you try it your way and we’ll be quiet and see what happens, but if it starts to go sour we are stepping in to do it our.”

I concur. For instance, at the GBR, we were having a chat with NRA reps Glen and Ashley. I flat out told Glen precisely that philosophically I was more GOA than NRA. However, the GOA can’t win by merely issuing press releases with heated rhetoric designed to scare white people. The GOA, and I hate to say this, is using the exact same strategy that is used by The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Ownership. They use over the top, fear-mongering rhetoric to get a response. And, frankly, a lot of their criticisms of HR2640 are crap. But I do not actively wish for their destruction nor do I discourage people from joining. And I don’t ask people to quit. So, extend the same courtesy to NRA and its members.

By all means, be critical and challenge them. But leave the pointless infighting behind.

Greg:

Take someone to the range today! In a month, they may be standing by your side defending our rights.

He also notes an email:

Thought you might find this interesting… there is a student who wants to do her senior project on gun safety… she wants to do a video of herself demonstrating proper procedures… she has her father’s permission and the principal has signed off on it. The other coordinator doesn’t want to approve it because it would be easy for her to get hurt then it would be a liability for the school. I am lobbying. You should be proud.

Hunting age

See, here I thought that lowering the hunting age was so that parents and kids could enjoy an outdoor activity together. Little did I know it was all a conspiracy propagated by The Triangle of Death to get kids hooked on guns at an early age. I love the use of addiction language too.

As a Proud Member of The Triangle of Death, I must have missed that copy of my marching orders.

ATF Hypocricy

So, the ATF is going after Red’s Trading Post for willful violations of arbitrary record keeping laws. Such violations have occurred to the tune of about 0.4% and are things like writing Y instead of Yes. You know, retarded government monkey stuff. But what standards does the ATF hold itself to? Not many.

An OIG Audit of the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record (NFRTR), which tracks NFA weapons, found that the NFRTR was incomplete, inaccurate, and unreliable. Oh sure, .gov gets some data wrong, what’s new? Unfortunately, if you have a weapon lawfully and the ATF makes a mistake then you are looking at $250K in fines and ten years in jail. Oh, and they’ll probably kick down your door at 3 in the morning and shoot your dog.

Chicks and, err, not guns – bleg

In comments here, Rachel asks:

This is only vaguely related, but I’m interested in what you all think for situations where a workplace explicitly bans the presence of guns. Say you were considering something for self-defense, but technically you wouldn’t be able to carry a gun to and from work, and that to and from is when you’re most often out alone. Is there something else you recommend for self-defense? I’m puzzled as to how something like a carry permit would work when you’re not allowed to have a gun at the workplace, and what the alternatives might be.

Well, I don’t recommend dressing like a vending machine. As far as I am concerned, my car is my property. And I simply think that a handgun is likely best for self defense. I know some folks recommend various chemical weapons and Tasers. What say you?

Holsters are dangerous

Received via email. This is an email circulating at the University of Florida:

TO: Deans

FROM: Dr. Patricia Telles-Irvin, Vice President for Student Affairs
RE: Protest Event Next Week

A national group known as Students for Concealed Carry On Campus, which advocates allowing students and others to bring concealed weapons to campus, plans an Empty Holster Protest all next week. Students who participate in the event are being urged to wear an empty holster to class in order to protest state laws and university policies that prohibit firearms on campus.

Neither state law nor campus policies prohibit carrying an empty holster, so anyone who participates in this event is within his or her rights. However, if any faculty member or student feels genuinely threatened, they should feel free to call the University Police Department. If you would, please pass this along to your department chairs and faculty.

I’m sorry but feeling threatened by an empty holster is beyond silly.

What is more dangerous to the human race than Global Warming?

The Government of course.

Atlanta has only 81 days of water left. If you were to say they had it coming for their suburban sprawl from Hell, you would be overlooking another reason, the Government of course.

The water supply for Atlanta is Lake Lanier. Every single day millions of gallons of Georgia water are pumped to Florida to keep water brackish for oysters and shrimp.

Whose bright idea was this? The Government of course.

Now people in Florida are telling people in Georgia they can’t build so many homes because of the water shortage. Guess where the people of Georgia plan to get some water from? Just guess. The friendly people of Tennessee of course. We have a nice big river and they want us to share. Even the Government is thinking what a swell idea this is.

Can the Government do anything else to screw up your life? Of course. You see we have this Global Warming crisis and if we don’t do something about it the Earth will be destroyed. So what is the Governments bright idea. Ethanol. Grow corn and make ethanol to cut down on foreign oil. More jobs, better national security, and were saving the Planet people. Could it get any better?

Actually, this is the single most stupid idea from the Government yet. Even dumber than changing the date for Daylights saving time.

One gallon of ethanol requires 1,700 gallons of water according to Cornell ecology professor David Pimentel. Do you think the Government should have thought of that?

In Mexico there are food riots because of corn shortages. Corn is a basic food staple in Mexico. Food prices worldwide are rising because of a shortage of corn for food. Remember the good old days when we just ate corn, instead of putting it in our gas tank?

Are we seeing the “law of unintended consequences” yet?

Want to do something to help? Boycott ethanol. You be saving the Planet. And a whole lot of water. And that’s a good thing.

Blame game

I like reading Aunt B. I wrote about why I do, even though we’re political opposites. But I take issue with this:

Who Does Kay Brooks Hate More–Men or Women?

Kay wrote a post about a rape that occurred and said that maybe the woman shouldn’t have been out walking late alone. Kay was very explicit to note that she was not saying she deserved it. And I don’t think from reading Kay that she was stating the woman was responsible either (though she did say she was not without some responsibility) . Now, here’s where I part ways with the, err, feminist persuasion. Kay essentially notes that maybe if this young lady had done something differently, this may not have happened. Aunt B. seems to think that would constitute blaming the victim. I don’t think that is the case.

More importantly, stating that Kay hates men or women is a bit of the feminist over the top rhetoric that turns me off.

Let’s change the situation and say I decided to drive my McLaren to a bad part of town. And somebody carjacks me. Now, did I deserve it? No. Am I responsible for what happened? No. Did I maybe have a bit of a lapse in judgment by going there? Could be. Should I have expected people not to take it? Well, sure. But that’s not the best expectation to have of other people. Because some other people are pieces of shit. Not everyone is. Certainly not all men. Nor all women. But some people are.

But when it’s rape, the aforementioned analysis becomes taboo to suggest and outright not politically correct to discuss. And that’s a shame, if not outright dangerous.

As Nomen said over there: blaming victims for being victimized is wrong, pretty much always; blaming women for being raped is wrong, always. but pointing out that the unfortunate, sympathy-worthy victim may have committed a tactical error does not equate to blaming her, no matter how monotonously the correct-tactics drum may be beaten in society at large.

Update: In comments, Brittney informs me I can’t read:

No, that doesn’t mean she deserves what happened but she is not without responsibility in this.

Ok, that’s pretty bad.

Biggest issue in gun rights?

Sebastian asks and answers. I tend to concur that getting more people involved in shooting is key. He also notes a general apathy among gun owners. Chicks and guns – bleg

I was talking off line with Nashville’s Bad Bad Ivy (known to most of you by her cleavage) about guns. Seems she’s interested in pursuing purchasing a gun. There’s also another Nashville Gal who has asked me the same question a long time ago but, to my knowledge, hasn’t made a decision yet and asked to be kept quiet. Long and short, she’s looking for a handgun which she may or may not get a carry permit for. And she wants advice. I have my standard advice to the new shooter: A Glock in any .4X caliber. My reasoning is that Glocks are simple to operate and .4X has adequate stopping power. Others will recommend revolvers. I then told her I could pose the question to you guys and she’d get multitudes of different answers. And, since education and exposure are important, I’m asking you to hit her with both barrels. Also, recommend any resources to her you may have come across.

Prior to that, I recommend she head to the range with someone knowledgeable enough to teach her the basics of firearms safety and shooting.

Also, any of you Nashvillians who wish to volunteer to head to the range, let me know.

Feel free to leave comments here or over at Ivy’s somewhere here..

About six months ago, I asked:

Due to some bizarre set of circumstances, congress decides that all federal gun laws need to be re-written and revised. You are elected/selected/appointed as the negotiator for pro-gun folks. And there will be one negotiator for the anti-gun folks. All federal laws will be wiped clean and you two will negotiate what the new gun laws will be. There will have to be compromise on both sides. So, what will you concede? And what is nonnegotiable?

Cops again getting machine guns unlawfully

First Illinois, now NY:

The Albany Police Officers Union wants to keep secret the names of any officers who illicitly purchased machine guns through the department years ago.

The union served papers Tuesday seeking to intervene in a Freedom of Information lawsuit filed by the Times Union, which is asking a judge to order the city to release the records.

The scandal was first exposed in an Aug. 26 Times Union story which reported that dozens of officers, as well as an assistant chief and at least one Albany County prosecutor, had used the department to illegally buy the federally regulated guns at tax-exempt, discount prices. They claimed the guns were for “official duties only” and subsequently registered them to the department, records obtained by the Times Union show.

In the wake of that report, Chief James W. Tuffey said the fully automatic guns were never deployed on the street and that many of the officers who got them were simply gun enthusiasts who used the department to illicitly obtain the automatic weapons.

In Illinois, the troopers got off scott free. Wonder what will happen in this case?

Abrams to go to trial

From a presser by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Ownership: Gun Lobbyist and Gun Dealer Sandy Abrams Heads to Trial for Illegal Assault Weapon Sales, Cited for 900 Federal Gun Law Violations Over Nearly a Decade

I’m not particularly familiar with the case but I do know that Abrams had said that he was investigated and the results of that investigation were violations of a technical nature. Seems people put Y instead of spelling Yes or a buyer listing the wrong county on form 4473. See here and here.

The Brady Bunch notes that he sold illegal assault weapons. Well, there is no assault weapons ban at the federal level and Maryland’s keeps getting defeated, though I think they do have some sort of magazine ban and have additional background checks and waiting periods for weapons classified as assault weapons. I could be mistaken but, hey, I can’t memorize every state’s laws. The Bradies say:

Abrams is charged with illegally selling felon Keith Showalter a Yugoslavian SKS assault rifle, a Bushmaster XM-15 assault rifle (the same model used in the D.C sniper shootings), and a Remington semi-automatic assault rifle. Showalter had been found guilty of violent crimes and had been fined for drug charges, and was barred under Federal law from purchasing or possessing a firearm. On February 18, 2007, Showalter fired seven shots from an SKS assault rifle at two Baltimore County police officers. The officers returned fire and killed Showalter. Abrams is also charged with illegal possession of a fully automatic machine gun with a silencer.

The SKS has never been classified as an assault weapon legally or technically. The XM-15 is not an assault rifle and could have been a post-ban model which would mean it was not covered by the AWB. And Remington doesn’t make a semi-automatic assault rifle that I know of (though they do make a semi-auto for hunting) and they do not make a semi-auto that has the features that would have banned it under the federal assault weapons ban.. And none of those are illegal under federal law nor under Maryland law, that I know of. Unless Abrams knew he was selling to a felon, there’s no violation there.

Now, the machine gun and suppressor possession could be an issue. We’ll see. He was a dealer so it is possible that the NFRTR database was in error. It has happened before. A lot.

The Bradies also cite some weapons traced but ATF even states that is useless a measure of crime.

Could be an interesting case to watch the NRA react to. Many dealers would like the NRA to step in and be a watchdog for when the ATF gets a bit overzealous. And Red’s Trading Post is under fire for such technical violations.

I don’t think Abrams will be taken to the woodshed over this one.

Update: Bitter says a lot of claims are likely false.

Update 2: Bitter clarifies in comments that she meant their claims are false regarding funding the legal defense.

Update 3: Turns out, Remington just started making the R-15, which is not a weapon that would have fallen under the AWB. Well, unless it had a collapsible stock.

On the pending MMM protest

Reader Clint emails that counter protests are being planned by the VCDL:

1. Antis planning protest at Richmond gun show on Saturday!
*********************************
The Million Mom March/Bady Campaign is planning a protest this
Saturday at the C & E Gun Show at the Showplace in Richmond. They
are planning a “lie-in” (boy, isn’t THAT the truth!) at noon near the
building. They plan on having women dressed in black to lie down for
two-minutes to represent how long it took Cho to get his guns.

I am going to have fun with this one! Cho had to wait THIRTY DAYS to
get his 9 MM pistol. More proof that gun control is a joke. Anyway,
I hope these women bring warm bedding for the month that they should
be lying there. ;-)

I plan on talking to the press (if any shows up) and our Executive
members are discussing some possible counter-protests, like a
stand-in representing those students who might be alive today if
they, or other law-abiding students or teachers, had been armed on
that fateful day.

The irony of this is that Steve Elliott, who runs C & E, is willing
to honor the MMM’s First Amendment right at the gun show, even though
he could legally ban them from the property, as it is privately
owned. If only the MMM hypocrites could honor the Second Amendment
the same way.

Steve is going to offer to let any of the protesters in for free so
they can see a gun show for themselves. I hope they go in – they
will be quite surprised by what they see.

While we are at it, let’s pack that gun show to support C & E.

And on a final note, while the MMM’s wish list for gun control would
actually make crime worse if implemented, they have a right to their
beliefs and it is important that we honor that right. That means
being polite to them, while letting the media know that the MMMs are
simply wrong on the issues.

Karma

So, I noted that some folks couldn’t comment at an anti-gun piece. The article is here. The webmaster at Cornell informed me that they were just in moderation. The author of the piece commented here. And then, in a bit of irony, wordpress decided that the author’s comments were spam. I have recovered all that I have found and promoted his status here so he should not have any more issues commenting here.

Update: Seems Cornell is different than Cornell Daily Sun. See comments.

Two dumb things I’ve done in the past few days

1 – Folks at the range at GBR will recall that the batteries for my EOTech on the 9mm AR-15 had died. I got home and looked for batteries. I found them in the Vltor ModStock that I have on the 9mm AR and that I also happened to buy, in part, because it had a compartment to hold batteries. Durdy dur.

2 – Handy tip: when you get home and have two AR lowers and two AR uppers, pay attention. You see, if you put your 9mm Upper on your 5.56 lower and then rack the charging handle, you just created yourself a bit of a problem that requires you to remove the stock and will likely destroy your take down pin spring. Oh, and why I thought it was a good idea to use LocTite on the CAR nut will now remain a mystery to me.

Anti-gun piece at Vandy

Via NinthStage, comes this:

Firearms remain a distinctly American obsession.

Ok, you’ve started off badly already. Perhaps you’ve heard of the Swiss, French, Australians, New Zealanders, Fins, and others with high rates of firearms ownership? Well, we’ll let your opener go. Surely, you have something factual to say.

While the rest of the civilized world has abandoned such instruments of technological feat and individual dignity, we have survived this strange, globally endemic wave of demasculinization by preserving our right — constitutional right, that is — to bear arms.

Err, nope. Guess not. Ok, let’s just skip to the end:

In short, our society must be willing to gamble on mutual trust and mutual peace.

Now, I’m a gambler. And that is what we gamblers would call a bet with a negative expectation. You see, you make your bets when your expectation is positive over time. In other words, if I can repeatedly make the bet a large number of times and, in the long run, profit then it is a good bet. This is not. I, instead, don’t gamble and take steps to ensure my own safety. And all the hippie, tree-hugging mutual trust bologna in the world isn’t worth a hill of beans the very second someone breaks that mutual trust your gambling on.

As NinthStage notes: First, there is no peace but mutual peace, unilateral peace just means you are not willing to admit you’re already at war.

Update: Ahab has more.

It certainly was enough to change my mind.

We don’t know whether or not it will get passed when it hits the floor, but we’d like to try. I’m an avid reader of your website and I would appreciate it if you could post the information below on your blog. It’s a copy of the email I have been sending out to everyone in my address book.

I know that lot’s of gunnies visit you. I’m hoping to reach as many Michigan voters as I can.

Do not hesitate to contact me if you need clarification.

Thanks in advance.

Below is a copy and paste job of an NRA alert regarding HB 4490. HB 4490 would get rid of the so-called safety inspection requirement for the purchase of new handguns.

Right now, there is no uniform method for ’safety inspections’. My favorite firearms rights organization, SAFR, ( www.firearmsalliance.org) collected reports from gun purchasers across Michigan and learned what has been going on.

In one city, the gun buyer brought a valuable collectors piece into the local PD for the safety inspection. He was told to leave it over night. He came back the next day to discover that someone had fired his gun and scratched the finish on a couple of places. Aside from the fact this was unauthorized use of his personal property, it was a collectors item valued in the thousands of dollars. Imagine someone writing a phone number on the back of your Honus Wagner baseball card.

Another city had the gun owner hold the pistol up to the bullet proof glass and show it to the cop doing the inspection. The cop never looked at or touched the gun and merely recorded the serial number.

Other cities have made it hard for people to bring their guns in. They will only accept guns for safety inspections during certain hours making it difficult for people to get the inspections done. It’s claimed that manpower is the reason. However, you can go to the same police departments and get accident reports all day long. The Michigan Attorney General issued a ruling that said police departments have to provide safety inspections during business hours the same as any other service. Quite a few police departments have thumbed their noses at this ruling and continue to do business that way.

The Safety Inspections the the police are supposed to conduct on your newly purchased handgun are not really safety inspections. None of the police officers involved are qualified to decide if a gun is safe or not.
Everyone has to pass a background check before purchasing a gun. If you cannot pass the check at the point of sale, you cannot buy the gun.
What’s really going on is that these inspections are rooted in the past when the KKK controlled Michigan politics. The only thing the police wanted to see was that a “safe” person, i.e. WASP was buying the gun. True, they aren’t really “inspecting” guns for these reasons now, but since they are not actually determining if the pistol is safe, then why should we have to bother putting up with this?

Please contact your local representative and urge them to vote to pass this bill.

Important Michigan Pro-Gun Bill to be Heard Soon!

Friday, October 12, 2007

State Representative Paul Opsommer (R-93) has introduced legislation that seeks to repeal the required “safety inspection” for newly obtained handguns. House Bill 4490 would also require law enforcement agencies to destroy safety inspection records on file. Current Michigan law requires anyone who comes into possession of a pistol to take it to the police or sheriff’s department for a safety inspection. The requirement of a safety inspection is a burdensome waste of time for law-abiding gun owners and HB4490 will end that inconvenience.

HB4490 is expected to receive a hearing in the House Committee on Tourism, Outdoor Recreation, and Natural Resources soon. Please contact the members of the Committee and respectfully urge them to support passage of HB4490.

More on Steven Tyler

Seems an Aerosmith fan board linked to where I met Steven Tyler. It was odd at Reno to see Tyler. First, the TSA guy asks me if I’m a fan of Steven Tyler. I said From Aerosmith? He said Yeah, he’s standing right there. And he was. He was standing their putting his clothes on after the TSA searched him. And, in hindsight, I really take issue with the TSA guy pointing that out. I mean, seems Tyler is entitled to some sort of privacy. And at least the privacy involved in TSA folks not pointing him out to random people going through security. People were asking him for pics and stuff while he was still trying to get his stuff together. Kinda lame.

And, hats off to Tyler. He smiled and took photos with anyone who’d ask. And was a nice guy. I didn’t ask for a photo because I figured he was tired of it.

And, by the way, Tyler is about five feet tall and weighs about 90 pounds soaking wet with his pockets full of quarters.

Uncle Bot’s: Tally ho!

Today’s PSH brought to you by the Cornell Daily Sun’s Tony Manfred:

I can go to a store right now and buy an AK-47; is there not something incredibly disturbing about that?

First of all, no you can’t. Second, no.

And my fave:

The delusional Neanderthals at the National Rifle Association should be charged as accomplices in every gun-related murder since 1871.

Update: Seems folks can’t comment there.

Update 2: Turns out the comments there are just moderated. I received an email from Mike Wacker the web editor at the Cornell Daily Sun:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Through Google Analytics, I have determined that your website has generated a substantial amount of traffic to Tony Manfred’s blog about guns. I do not have much to say on the issue of the Second Amendment, but I would like to clarify our comment policy, since you claim we are not letting people comment on our website.

We are allowing comments for this blog like any other content on our website, but all anonymous comments must be approved (especially to protect against comments promoting Viagra, porn, etc.). Specifically, the comment that one person claimed would not get through was approved by me today.

Sometimes there can be a substantial delay until someone who has permission to approve comments logs on to the website and approves the comment. As much as we would love to check the website every minute for comments, the staff at The Cornell Daily Sun does sleep, do homework, and attend classes, so we apologize if our response may be slow at times to approve comments.

I hope that clarifies any misunderstandings you may have. Please feel free to reply if you would like to know anything more.

Hats off to the guy for letting me know. I’ve corrected my errors. I wonder if Manfred will correct his?

Who was watching the shop?

I apparently can’t step away without some thing bad happening. Seems The Governator signed the gradual ten year ban on semi-automatic handguns err microstamping bill. But it’s California. Should I have expected anything else? Doubtful.

Gun Blogger Rendezvous In Flight Write Up

So, how’d the Gun Blogger Rendezvous go? I’ll tell you. It was a great time and those of you who did not come missed a good time. On the event, here’s a summary:

Thursday: We had a meet and greet and social time. A good time. Sebastian and I snuck out to meet with the NRA reps to, err, prepare them (and us) for what we thought the focus of the conversation would be. We told them they’d have a tough crowd. They did not deliver the wheelbarrows full of cash like Laura Washington said they would. I mean, I know she’s wrong a lot but could she have at least gotten this one right? The NRA folks were interested in blogging and their questions started very generally. Things such as wondering how many folks the various gun blogs reached; our various methodologies for getting material to blog about; and other shop talk. It was, I felt, informative for them. They then asked specific things such as how to get things done. We discussed various ways bloggers could help the NRA and vice versa.

Friday: Met for some breakfast and folks generally went their own way until the sooper seekrit meeting with our fellow Triangle Of Death members and the NRA. We met with the NRA folks and everyone introduced themselves. Glen from the NRA told us about NRA’s grassroots division and other interesting things. He also gave us an idea how information and activism could be perpetuated through the blogs. He seemed very knowledgeable and he was open to frequent questions.

Then, it was our turn. And the gun bloggers let them have it. And I don’t mean they let them have it in a generally angry or condescending way. I mean they asked tough, intelligent questions about policy and perception. The consensus, in very general terms, seemed to be that the NRA had an image problem and that image problem was that we saw them doing things we did not like or, often, there were things we just didn’t see them doing. Now, obviously, things happen that we do not see and we were open to that. The NRA folks flat out asked how they could change that. So, we let them have it with various suggestions about future avenues to appeal to the shooter demographic. And they were very interested and asked us a lot of questions. They took lots of notes and were receptive of the feedback we gave them. I see good things happening from this in the future.

The particular issue that seemed to have most of us blogger folks a bit concerned was the NRA and the Parker/Heller case. And that one seemed to be most damaging to them, from the average gun blogger’s perspective.

We also had a little show and tell. I gave a little talk about the ko-tonics. Larry from Brownell’s also gave us a bit of a presentation on the company. He gave us some sampler products (dude, free gun oil!). And he also told us how Brownell’s was active in not only selling shooting supplies but advocating our second amendment rights. I’ve spent lots of money at Brownell’s over the years and will probably start spending more their just due to their support of the second amendment. That level of support is not found in many retailers.

Saturday: Range time! It was a blast. Everyone got to demo the Ko-tonics upper receiver. I liked it a lot. With an EOTech red dot sight, I was pinging 12 inch steel plates out at 400 to 600 yards. Many others were doing the same thing with it. The upper is awesome and worked well. After about 100 rounds, there was one failure to feed. Then we realized that nobody had lubed it up. After that, it ran flawlessly. A special thanks to Tim from Ko-tonics. He shipped the upper receiver to me to take to the GBR to review. He also arranged, with the help of Silver State Armory, to have sent to the hotel 400 rounds of 6.8SPC ammunition for use with the upper.

I shot a 50 caliber rifle for the first time. And I flinched like a girl, therefore putting my shot about 20 feet short at a thousand yards. I didn’t know what to expect, hence the flinch. It was mostly painless and felt rather like firing a 12 gauge.

I also shot Joe Huffman’s long range rifle. I hit a steel plate with it three out of four times at 1,000 yards.

Then there was the Kalashnikov challenge. Sebastian decided he wanted to shoot his AK-74 at 400 yards. I laughed because it’s an AK. I mumbled something about how you couldn’t hit the side of a barn from inside the damn barn with an AK. Then, since we were in a gambling town, I told him that if he could hit the steel target before exhausting one magazine, I’d buy him a beer. He hit it four times, though some say he hit it five.

The range was great because I shot all day and, with the exception of the ko-tonics and Jimmy B’s tricked out 22 pistol, I never shot the same weapon twice.

The big winner of the Gun Blogger Rendezvous day at the range: EOTech. Last year, after shooting mine, Jimmy B decided he had to have one. And he put it on his 22 pistol. I was shooting golf balls with it at about 20 yards. This year, US Citizen and Sebastian also decided they had to have one.

Sebastian, by the way, bought the Ko-tonics upper after we shot it.

After the range was dinner and prizes. Some of the prizes included a Hi-Point handgun, gift certificates to Natchez, copies of David Hardy’s In Search of the Second Amendment, a Brownell’s range bag, and Boomershoot merchandise.

The high point of the dinner was the speech by Chuck from Project ValourIT. ValourIT purchases voice activated laptops for injured troops so that they can, well, do what we all do every day: chat, blog, check email, balance their checkbook, and surf the web. Chuck was injured by an IED and lost the use of his hands. He knew of some voice activated software and a lady with Soldiers Angels got him a laptop and the software. They decided that this was something that more injured troops needed and ValourIT was born. Chuck told us that these guys just having the ability to once again do what they used to do every day is often a real help to getting them through their injuries. Definitely a worthy cause and one worth sending a few bucks to. The GBR raises some money for these folks.

Sunday: Travel day. But I met Steven Tyler.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
