Where do I get one?

MSNBC says that the Mexican civil war is fueled by .50 caliber machine guns that you can just walk into a gun shop and buy.

Why are anti-gun activists so violent?

TAMU Students for Concealed Carry:

We did have an incident of someone tearing down our fliers and lighting them on fire in one of the buildings, but they were luckily arrested for attempted arson.

They don’t trust you with guns. I mean, look what you can do with matches.

Lucky Gunner Shoot

Friday, a group of us local yokels went out to shoot at an event put on by LuckyGunner.com. There was a variety of cool guns and things to try. The one everyone wanted to shoot was the Zel Custom 50. It was fun. First up, I had to assemble it. I noticed a few things about the AR lower though. It had a different hammer. The bolt catch was removed. And the entire buffer assembly was gone, including the catch. It’s also just about one Helen long:

Since I had never assembled one before, it was agreed by everyone but me that I would shoot it first. That way, if it blew up because I did it wrong, then I had no one to blame but me. Richard helped holding the thing in place. Here’s the first shot taken with it (this photo taken by Les):

I put about three down range with it before everyone else wanted to give it a go. I had shot a .50 before in Reno and sorta knew what to expect. First, it’s loud. Really loud. Recoil isn’t really that bad. In fact, I thought slugs out of Dustin’s Mossberg had more felt recoil. But the sound, even when standing well behind it, would rattle your sternum. The other fun toy folks seemed to like was the suppressed 22. Here’s The Doc having a go with it:

From Lucky Gunner Shoot

It was sorta funny because on one side of the line there was the horrendously loud boom of the 50 going off. And on my other side, the suppressed 22 was going off. And it sounds like a staple gun. Gunnies are extremists.

And muzzle climb is pretty stout on the .50. Here’s Glenn shooting it standing with me doing some fast photography to catch the boom:

Also, this was the first time I got to do a low-light and night shoot:

Everyone should do that. A few notes: lasers help. Crimson Trace laser grips are great for low-light shooting and night shooting. When shooting an AR with a light mounted, I can get off two rounds before the combination of smoke from the gun and the flashlight almost completely blur the target. I learned a lot shooting at night.

It was a good time.

Heard at the blog shoot

Les: Oh, you got some Peltors.

Me: Yes.

Les: You know, they work better if you put the microphone toward the front. You have them on backwards.

Me: Well, you know, I don’t like people sneaking up behind me.

Les: I won’t blog this.

Shooty Goodness Commencing

Since October is apparently blogger shoot month (there’s been one scheduled every weekend somewhere), I’m heading to the local one here in a few.

We’ll get to shoot this Zel Custom:

Same planet, different worlds

This quote of the day from Joe and subsequent links got me to thinking. Go read and come back. There simply cannot be peace between our people and it’s entirely because of different mentalities, world views and ways of thinking. And that quote is one example of this substantial difference in thinking and cognition.

The other difference I find in dealing with folks with whom I mostly disagree politically is the concept of need. Why do you need a 50 caliber? Why do you need a car that gets to 60 in under 5 seconds and gets shitty gas mileage? Why do you need this or that? And my response is always the same: What’s need got to do with it?

And this throws them for a loop. Literally. They feel the need to justify their desires, wants, views and goals so that they’re palatable to other people. They expect you to do the same. I have no such predilection toward that. I do things because I want to. And when I explain to them that my supposed need has fuck all to do with anything, I can literally watch their eyes glaze over in what I presume is disbelief. I think it’s hard on them to be told that they don’t have a say. And I’m not justifying any thing to them.

ETA: And I think their amazement comes from being told their whole life that feelings matter and are the most important things on earth. Which is, mostly, patently false. So being told your feelings don’t actually matter and you don’t get a say can be a hard kick in the reality.

Binary

Seen at reason:

“CVS did not set out to be part of the meth trafficking trade but they made a poor decision,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Shana Mintz. “Rather than choosing to over-comply like their competitors did, they knowingly under-complied with the law.”

They either broke the law or did not. Under-complied sounds dumb. Seems they weren’t in the habit of harassing their customers who had colds enough for the government.

The bullet spinning in ice

Mentioned it yesterday but Geekologie has a look. Could be faked since the spinning bullet looks to be in real good shape for something just launched from a barrel.

Where do I get one of those?

The paper of making up the record:

Afterward, officers of the Organized Crime Control Bureau were given tactical training in the use of heavy weapons, including automatic and semiautomatic machine guns, to spell the Emergency Service Unit in such an eventuality.

Can’t we all just get a long gun?

Cracks me up. You see, whenever I’m critical of GOA, I’m an NRA apologist. And they can do no wrong. Because I’ve never criticized them for things like taking credit for the SAF’s work or their lame fundraising attempts or other things.

But it is a fair point that, by virtue of voting party line 97% of the time, maybe gun rights aren’t that well served.

Pocket 380s

CTD has a look. Once Kel-Tec came out with the P3AT, everyone else decided to play along. Last year, pocket pistols were the rage and you couldn’t find ammo for them.

Judgmental

I’ve said before I don’t get the Taurus Judge. And it jumped the shark when they made a tactical one. It’s not practical. .410 sucks from that barrel. And it’s roughly the size of a Buick.

Tam doesn’t get it either, neither does Caleb. PDB tells you why it sucks.

The beauty of Obion County

This started as a comment but wordpress thinks I am spam. The situation where the fire department let a house burn because the owner didn’t pay is the perfect bogeyman for every ideology. We can blame libertarians! We can blame lack of lefty sensibilities*. We can blame the homeowner for not paying his fees. We can blame the county government for setting up such an arrangement. We can blame rich people. We can blame the city government for policies that require these guys to stand around while a house burns.

It’s a perfect storm of fucked.

* seriously, someone actually thinks there’s a social contract? That’s fucking funny, right there.
