Court Pick

Looks like Sonia Sotomayor is the SCOTUS nom. Because she has a vagina. At least, that’s why they tell me should be the pick.

About all I can find on her regarding the second amendment was that she was a judge in Maloney v. Cuomo, which is the nunchaku case in NY where the court said the second amendment doesn’t apply to the states.

Update: In addition to the vagina, she’s also got brown skin. Apparently, these are two important traits in a justice. Because that’s what people are focusing on.

Ping

As part of setting up an area on my land to shoot (suppressed, of course, to avoid annoying the neighbors), I wanted to set up some targets that gave feedback. I figured the ping of metal was good enough feedback. So, I scored some 1/8 inch aluminum plates. Wasn’t sure if subsonic 22LR (CCI hollow points if you must know) would go through them, so I figured I’d test it out. Not that it matters because I’ll have a sure backstop but I was wondering how long a plate would last. Here’s a plate with 11 rounds at about 10 yards (it was fixing to rain so I just fired off 11 real fast without a lot of effort at aiming, so sorry for the group size):

From Gun Porn

None penetrated the metal, which is good. But I figure after about five mags or so, it’d start looking like Swiss cheese. Bonus coolness, one of the rounds after it hit the metal at about 900 FPS:

And the pings are quite loud. Louder than the suppressed Walther, for sure.

Post Heller and gun crime

After Heller, an interesting thing happened:

The D.C. police department’s aggressive gun recovery efforts and the office of the attorney general’s coordinated emphasis on prosecuting gun-related crimes are showing strong results: In the past year, robberies with guns have decreased 12 percent; assaults with guns have decreased 14 percent; and overall violent crime has decreased by 5 percent in the District.

Golly, gun crime and overall violent crime went down. Police actually had to start finding criminals and putting them in jail.

Via triggerfinger, who says:

It looks like arresting criminals and putting them in jail works, and gun control doesn’t.

Who would have thought?

A feature

I’ve always said End the war on drugs and release the prisoners. Turns out, when you decriminalize marijuana that you have to lay off prison employees.

Rebranding

The American Hunters and Shooters Association, that anti-gun astroturf group that holds itself out as pro-gun to woo gullible Democrats, is looking to change its image.

Anti-gunners wonder why they lose, suck

We Win, They Lose. Now, Let’s Get To Work.

The AP:

Frustrated liberals are asking why a Democratic-controlled Congress and White House can’t manage to close the Guantanamo prison or keep new gun-rights laws from passing.

So, we now know why they suck. I mean, who actually calls something a right and then is sad that they cannot restrict it? And the press calls them liberals? Continuing:

Via Sebastian, who notes the total dissing of the Brady Campaign. Speaking of, Paul Helmke is a sad panda:

”We need activists. I have 30 employees, the NRA [National Rifle Association] has 600,” Helmke said.

And NRA has actual grassroots too. You know, people are passionate about rights.

Tennessee Crime Stats

Over at View from the Cumberlands, they have a look:

In 2008, there were 171 murders committed in Tennessee using handguns. But there were also 61 committed using knives, compared with 21 committed by shotgun and less than a dozen* committed with those dastardly assault rifles

Clearly, we must ban knives. For the children.

Speaking of park carry

Les Jones note what is often lost in the debate on carry in national parks: traveling on roads that just happen to go through parks. Yeah, living here at the base of the Smoky Mountains, it would be pretty tough to get around to some places with a gun in your car without breaking the law.

With the passage of this law, I’m guessing my brand of bear spray is legal. But other brands probably aren’t.

Notice any thing?

Like say the disconnect between the headline and the story? Headline:

Memphians debate guns in parks

Only by debate they mean interviews with people who oppose the bill.

Interesting DC Gun Case

Over at the Blog of Legal Times:

For background, Ord runs a private security business, Falken Industries, and is considered a special conservator of the peace under Virginia law. That means Ord, who is a “qualified” law enforcement officer in the eyes of Virginia, allowed to carry a gun there. Ord thinks he should be allowed to carry a gun in D.C. for his line of work. But he’s not willing to test the authorities—not after police in April 2008 applied for and received a warrant for his arrest on the charge of possession of an unregistered firearm, a misdemeanor.

Also, the Law Enforcement Safety Act of 2004 does allow qualified LEOs to carry nationwide.

Chicks and guns

More women buying and carrying guns:

An unprecedented number of women are taking their protection into their own hands by getting a gun. Gun stores are seeing more women customers than anyone can remember. Many women are also getting permits to carry a concealed weapon.

Local 12 Reporter Liz Bonis shows us why many women are in a hurry to arm themselves.

Mr. Fixit

When repairing something around the house, I wonder what the average number of trips the American male makes to the local big box home improvement store is? I’m guessing between 3 and 7. I’m up to four repairing a sink drain. And I’ll probably wind up calling a plumber. Feh.

Encouraging people to shoot first

A man pulls a knife on another man. The other man simply let it be known he had a gun and the situation was defused. He gets convicted for having a gun on school grounds. The judge said that had the guy pointed the gun at the other man or, I guess, shot him, it would have been valid self defense. Pretty dumb. H/T Robb.
