Return of the echo chamber

On the day of John McCain’s speech at the Republican National Convention our favorite progressive site returns to its Stalinist ways. Via la purge.

KnoxViews is a private club yet again. Only registered users may speak.

Free Speech is a dangerous idea. We like danger here.

By the way, great speech John. I mean Mr. President.

Update: Anyone can comment now. The wall is down.

pitbull and lipstick

Heh.

For the record, there’s probably no way to get Politically Incorrect Dog to cooperate for that without eating the lipstick.

gun questions for Palin

The Brady Bunch has some. PGP has answers.

Other Palin Concerns

Your misogyny is showing.

Seems some folks have some concerns about Sarah Palin’s priorities. They seem to think she should be at home, barefoot and pregnant. Turns out, they have other concerns with her too. This list of talking points addressing Sarah Palin came to me via email so consider it a SayUncle exclusive:

  • Needs to have a state trooper drive her around because, you know, she’s a woman and they can’t drive for shit.
  • She once worried her pretty little head about something.
  • Once accidentally burned dinner, when her sweet little ass was in the kitchen where it should be!
  • She wants to be Vice President? Well isn’t that just cute!
  • Her daughter is a slut because she’s a woman.
  • She’s known to be indecisive. Because she’s a woman.
  • She irons one hell of a shirt.
  • She was chummy with the Alaska secessionists because, as a woman, she’s obviously a home-wrecker.
  • Palin left the small town she was mayor of deeply in debt. Because she’s a woman and you know how they are when it comes to money and shopping.
  • Update: Who are the feminists again?

And KAG agrees with Dr. Helen?

    IOKIYAR

Man, do I love The Daily Show:

How do you know if a Republican is applying a blatant double-standard? His or her lips are moving…

SayUncle adds: I assume Tom meant to link to this.

tgirsch adds: I actually meant to embed this, but I forgot that embedding doesn’t work here.

    Chicks and Guns

Lissa Kay and some other women went to the range, clinging to their bibles and guns. First time shooters to boot! Lots of pics. And some movies.

I was invited to go but, at the last minute, my day job intervened.

    More Palin on Guns

    Seen at Jacob’s:

she faces questions over the firing of a longtime local police chief. After taking over as Mayor of the small town of Wasilla, Palin fired the longtime local police chief. The former police chief, Irl Stambaugh says he was fired because he stepped on the toes of Palin’s campaign contributors, including bar owners and the National Rifle Association … In his 1997 lawsuit, Stambaugh also alleged that his stand on restricting concealed weapons upset the NRA. “Mayor Palin has stated on several occasions that the National Rifle Association encouraged her to fire Chief Stambaugh because of his stance against the concealed weapons legislation,” the lawsuit claimed …”

And the press coverage seems sensationalist. I consider this to be a feature, not a bug. IIRC, Alaska (which now requires no permit to carry) issues permits for reciprocity with other states. Seems like the guy may have been disregarding the law. Anyone familiar with Alaska’s 1997 laws?

    New owner, same GOB

Well, if one can be VP then one can open an adult business:

A woman has applied to locate a sexually-oriented business at 2642 U.S. 411 South in the city of Maryville, a move an adjacent business owner opposes.

This would be the first such business within the city limits.

Deborah Yantis wants to locate her business, Sunshine (sic) Video, closer to town, said Maryville Development Services Director John Jagger. Sunshine Video was previously located at the intersection of U.S. 411 South, Clover Hill Mill Road and Calderwood Highway in Blount County.

Looks like it’s under new ownership. You’ll recall the past owner’s issues with the local political machine.

To Aunt B. on home ownership, though she seems more enthusiastic about garage door opener ownership.

    Off to a bad start

Email received just a bit ago:

I’m a journalist at [redacted] in Paris; I came across your blog looking for information on rifle use in the US. I’m actually doing an article about gun use for children – if or if not it should be allowed/ encouraged.

I was wondering whether you’d be interested in commenting on this subject? We need someone to defend gun use. It would be great if you learnt how to use a gun as a child and could explain the benefits, or if you have children who use guns responsibly.

    My response:

We don’t ‘use guns’ and we’re not ‘gun users’. It’s rather like you’re inferring we have some sort of mental affliction similar to drug users.

We shoot or fire guns. We are gun owners.

We’ll see how it progresses from there. Anything you want to add, do so in comments.

Update: She has since apologized, not realizing it was offensive. On to the questions.

    Google Chrome

My brief review. You can download it here.

The good: It’s fast, clean and neat.

It also lets you use the hotkeys in wordpress (i.e., alt+A for hyperlink) this never worked in Firefox.

The bad (or Firefox ruined me): I want it to open items from a bookmark in a new tab. It doesn’t do that.

I also like to store my bookmarks in folders and opening all items in a folder at once. Can’t do that with Chrome, that I’ve found.

When you close the last tab, it closes the application. Not a fan.

I wish new tabs would be opened at the end and not behind the current tab.

Other: Not tried downloading yet so I dunno if it has a download manager or not.

Update: Also cool that I can resize text boxes in the browser. I do wish it would remember the size and keep it the same when I come back to the site.

    In Mass

Author faces ten years in prison for non violent firearms violations:

Prolific writer Peter Manso, author of, among other books, biographies of Norman Mailer and Marlon Brando, has been indicted on a dozen firearms charges by a Massachusetts grand jury and faces years in prison.
Did he brandish a gun in public? Threaten a neighbor with a drive-by shooting?

No, the guns were all stored, quite securely, in his locked and alarmed home. In fact, police discovered the weapons only when they responded to a burglar alarm while the writer was away. Either the guns were in plain view — evidence that Manso expected no legal trouble for their possession — or else, as Manso’s attorney alleges, “Truro police searched Manso’s house illegally while responding to the alarm.” (The Times of London reports they were “in a cupboard.”)

    […]

The main problem seems to be that Manso’s Firearms Identification Card expired after the passage of new legislation in 1998 — previously, FIDs lasted a lifetime; now they expire every six years. The new law has caused endless problems in the Bay State, since authorities have not been very effective about informing gun owners of the change. As the Globe reports, “In July 2002, a State House committee found that thousands of Massachusetts residents were probably unaware that they needed to renew fire identification cards.”

Gun control works (if your goal putting non-violent people in jail for a long time).

    Buying a gun in DC

    It goes through one man:

Residents here who buy a gun to keep legally at home, now that the Supreme Court has overturned the city’s ban on handguns, will find that a bureaucratic maze leads them to an unmarked door on Good Hope Road Southeast where Charles W. Sykes Jr. does business.

Mr. Sykes does not sell guns, but on Tuesday he is expected to become the only federally licensed dealer in Washington to serve as the transfer agent for the carefully controlled transactions that will put guns in the hands of district residents.

There are no gun stores here, and a resident who buys a gun elsewhere must have the weapon shipped to a licensed dealer in the district. Mr. Sykes’s permit will allow him to receive the weapon and, for a transaction fee of $125, he will ensure that the requisite paperwork is prepared for approval by federal and district officials before handing over the weapon to its new owner.

Mr. Sykes has been handling this kind of transaction since 1994 for security firms, police officers and the like. His enterprise, CS Exchange Limited and located in the southeast Washington neighborhood of Anacostia, is not listed in the telephone book, and he does not advertise. But his name is commonly known in local gun circles, and he can be found on the Internet.

Well, they could call Josh Sugarmann at the VPC. He’s a merchant of death, ya know.

    More of the same

Editorial page editor John Gibson of the Nashville Dog Trainer is retiring. His replacement will be Dwight Lewis, who was SayUncle’s Idiot of the Day just last month for 1) being bigoted toward gun owners and 2) accusing the NRA of lying about Obama’s record on guns while he was 3) lying about Obama’s record on guns.

    Chicks and guns

Jay takes a lady to the range.

    She files this report.

My invisible man in the sky can beat up your invisible man in the sky

The Obama fans are amusing. For instance, did you know that Palin’s pastor said that criticizing Bush can land you in Hell. Meanwhile, Obama’s pastor thinks that the government created AIDS to kill black people. Pick your flavor of crazy.

It’s gone but you can still smell teh st00pid

Kos scrubbed all the lame accusations about Palin from the site. Down the memory hole! Not shocking, it’s what commies do.

Kids are off limits in political campaigns

As long as they’re the kids of Democrats.

Wall to wall Sarah Palin’s daughter coverage. But we couldn’t talk about Biden’s daughter’s bar fight or Algore’s son getting pinched for DUI. Etc.

But it was OK for the nutroots to speculate that John Roberts small son may have been light in the shoes.

As insty noted: HOW THEY COULD HAVE KEPT THE PALIN PREGNANCY STORY OUT OF THE PRESS: Leaked it that John Edwards was the father

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
