Gun safety

In New Zealand, kids as young as four are getting gun licenses as part of being educated and learning gun safety:

Four-year-old preschooler Lucy Coup has already earned her own gun licence.

Like the other children at her Auckland kindergarten, and in childcare centres around New Zealand, the youngster hangs the laminated licence from a string around her neck when she plays with her toy gun – but she must shoot at the target.

“We don’t shoot people, because it might hurt them,” Lucy says firmly.

Instead of banning gun play, many early education centres are adopting a policy that sees children earn a “gun licence” once they brush up on the dangers.

The Glock in decline

Like I said, that claim is overstated. Glock is here to stay. But the follow up to yesterday’s piece is here. Glock does one thing and they do it well. And, so far, that’s all they seem to want to do. And if you want that one thing (a moderately priced, reliable handgun that requires little maintenance and still goes bang every time) then it’s still a great choice.

I will note that Richard is quite correct on one key thing: Glock has missed a lot of opportunities and these seem to come from failing to take the US market seriously. In the 1990s, a single stack 9mm Glock would have been fantastic. My understanding is that to get the engineers to make the single stack 45 was hard enough.

Gun sales up

In Hawaii:

The attorney general’s office said Monday it processed 12,801 applications in 2010, up 1.5 percent from the previous record high of 12,606 reached the year before.

Hawaii permit applications have nearly doubled since 2000, while the number of registered firearms has surged more than 130 percent.

Hawaii has some pretty strict gun laws too.

Guns and drugs

Medical Marijuana Users Fight For Gun Rights. Interesting story from NPR no less:

Willis is not only packing a concealed handgun permit in her wallet, she also has a medical marijuana card. That combination has led the local sheriff to try to take her gun permit away.

Also, your form 4473 asks you to affirm you’re not an illegal user of drugs. Via SIH.

And in Ohio, a judge rules that those charged with misdemeanor drug offenses do not lose their right to arms.

Masslive:

Two police officers, training on patrol rifles at the Smith & Wesson shooting range in Springfield, suffered injuries Wednesday morning when one of the firearms exploded.

“For one reason or another the weapon had a failure, we really haven’t determined the cause yet,” said Sgt. Patrick Manley. “A round exploded in the chamber and caused the weapon to blow to pieces…It just blew up.”

When this happens, my first thought is hey, reloads. But I doubt the police roll their own. S&W says it’s not a problem with the gun which may mean ammo was the culprit.

And when the police have them, the go from being assault weapons to patrol rifles.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
