We’re all racist now

People have their delicate sensibilities all atwitter because some one you would have never otherwise heard of forwarded an image of Michelle Obama making an unflattering facial expression. Said gesture was then compared to a monkey making the same facial expression. You can see the image and some righteous indignation here.

One of the reasons people are clutching their pearls is because IT’S RACIST!!!. Or is it? I don’t think the comparison is inherently racist. Because the two facial expressions are similar. And they are as similar as the facial expressions of George Bush being compared to a monkey here. In other news, it turns out chimps and human beings make similar facial expressions. Who knew?

Racism depends on the context. Racism is not defined as look at all these people who are offended and showing me their shocked face. Racism is very specifically defined as discrimination or prejudice against a race. Or the implication that one race is inherently superior to another. The photo is unflattering. The comparison is rude. And it’s not even all that funny. But it’s not inherently racist. People were yammering on here about how the cultural context makes the implication clear that it must be racist. Horseshit. Our culture has been conditioned to presume that comparisons of some groups of people to animals is racist, whether that’s the intent or not? Then our culture sucks. That’s the only cultural implication I get out of that nonsensical position. So, clearly, our entire culture is just racist. That proposition, I suppose, is easier than thinking. Guess it’s just easier to presume something is racist and then force those involved to defend themselves.

Intent matters more than your cultural baggage and white guilt.

Besides, Michelle Obama looks like Wayne Brady anyway.*

And Sigorney Weaver.*

* I’m sure that’s racist too.

When seconds count

In Knoxville:

KPD officers clocked the longest average response time – 13 minutes and 13 seconds. But police believe that’s more a sign of a technological gap than of foot-dragging.

Thirteen minutes is a long time, particularly if you’re fighting for your life.

Starbucks Stuff

Savor the victory. Patronize their business. And let it go. I agree with others. We’ve won. Nothing else to be gained by pushing the issue. So, let the losers at Protest Easy Guns bleat. And have yourself a cup of coffee.

Says Curt:

My message to the media is that they are getting it all wrong (big surprise there). It’s not gun owners who are putting Starbucks into the middle of this, it’s the Brady Campaign.

We’re not protesting or signing petitions, we’re not picketing and issuing news releases condemning the places that DON’T respect the rights of law abiding citizens.

That’s not how we roll.

And it’s a trap.

Keeping Score

Tam on competition:

Prizes lead to rulebooks, rulebooks lead to rules lawyers, and you wind up discouraging people from getting out there and getting involved.

One of the local ranges does IDPA. I think I’m gonna show up one day.

Zombies

John Snow is having a contest:

When it comes to zombie guns there’s no middle ground. You either love ’em or hate ’em. And because I hate zombies, I love zombie guns. My top choice in a rifle for battling the undead is this AR from Lauer Custom Weaponry that includes an arrow launcher attached to the bottom rail and a blood-splattered DuraCoat finish.

He wants to know your favorite zombie gun. Also from John, past zombie guns.

Speaking of zombies, CTD’s e-postal match has a zombie theme.

Unpossible

This man could not have been shot at Buffalo Wild Wings because carrying guns where alcohol is served is illegal.

The Narrative

A California man (coincidentally a truther) opens fire at the Pentagon. The NYT misses the truther narrative but gets on some gun control right quick:

Virginia, which has some of the most lax gun laws in the nation and has been pushing to expand gun rights, has been criticized lately by gun control advocates. The state’s General Assembly approved a bill last month allowing people to carry concealed weapons in bars and restaurants that serve alcohol, and the House of Delegates voted to end a 17-year-old measure barring people from buying more than one handgun a month.

Seems that way

Guav:

It’s gotten to the point now where you can just assume that every single anti-gay GOP politician fucks dudes regularly

Seems like they act all anti-gay to divert attention. I dunno.

Misandry

Why are anti-gun activists so sexist?

Meanwhile, a look at all those “Guys With Guns“.

Indeed: women are fast becoming our most passionate advocates.

Straws: grasping at

Josh Sugarmann thinks that because one company that sells AR-15s is going out of business that it represents a collapse of the AR-15 market. He parrots the canard of declining gun ownership. And he says the NRA was responsible for the y2k scare. Josh is either desperate or stupid.

Strange and unconstitutional

Newspaper told by judge to yank satirical story about a giraffe attack because people think it’s real.

Gun Porn

Sig 220

Another pic of the suppressed shotgun from No Country For Old Men. Couple things: The suppressor is fake (bummer) and the shotgun is actually an anachronism since it wasn’t around the time the movie supposedly took place. Still, pretty cool.

Add her name to the first spot

A woman lobbyist for a group that is working to add sex offenders and those accused of domestic violence to registries has shot and killed her husband in a case of domestic violence.

Also, from the group’s website:

Do you have guns in your home? Has your partner ever threatened to use them when he was/is angry?

Poll cats

Bitter:

The Brady Campaign thinks they can compete on the grassroots front with us. It’s so naive that I think it’s kinda cute.

Heh. The polls she links to are one-sided for the good guys.

Ya know what’s funny? There’s been a bit of press coverage over the issue. The press coverage always quotes the Brady folks. But there’s never been an organization named as encouraging folks to OC and thank Starbucks. That’s real grassroots.

Daley to Supreme Court: WAAAHHHHH!!

Someone needs a wet-nap:

Why can’t I go to the Supreme Court and sit there with a gun and listen to the arguments? If a gun is so important to us on the street or someone’s home, why can’t I go to the Supreme Court and sit there with a gun? I’m not gonna shoot anyone. But, I have a right to that gun

Because it’s still illegal to carry in DC? And the court is US government property. And once more, with feeling:

There’s a reality, but also there should be passion and common sense. We assassinated President John F. Kennedy. We assassinated Martin Luther King. And we assassinated Robert F. Kennedy — and we’re proud of that. That’s the answer to problems with a gun. That is not,” Daley said, again ladling on the sarcasm.

Well, you’ve been busy.

“When a child gets shot or killed, that is a failure of society. Adults should stand up and say, guns don’t solve things in homes or streets. If it was, then everyone here would be carrying a gun in our own corporations.

Because no one gets shot in Chicago.

Not listening in

Within hours of oral arguments in the Heller case, audio of the proceedings were available online. But in the McDonald case, not so much:

Court puts silencer on gun arguments

The media group Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) expressed disappointment today that the Supreme Court refused to release same day audio tapes in the key Second Amendment case before the court yesterday.

“The Supreme Court is the ultimate people’s court, and people have the right to hear and see what goes on there. It’s disappointing that the news media are not allowed to use their best tools to deliver this important story to their audiences,” said RTDNA Chairman Stacey Woelfel in a news release.

The Spin Cycle

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Ownership has started spinning the McDonald case, which hasn’t even been decided yet. They say the court emphasized reasonable regulations. Odd because most of the Brady wish list items are not reasonable. Anyway, read all the spin from Helmke right here.

Houston Case Update

No second trial for Rocky Houston. This was an odd case. A few years back, the brothers were arrested for ambushing and killing a deputy and his ride along (who was armed). According to locals, there were many reports of the local police harassing the brothers. The jury found him not guilty of first degree murder and deadlocked on other charges.

Gay rights and gun rights

Both treated the same in DC:

In D.C., getting gay married is now almost exactly like buying a handgun. Like handgun ownership, gay marriage was illegal until very recently, and both require massive amounts of paperwork and a waiting period. But today was the first day D.C.’s gay couples could apply for a license, and apply they did!

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
