Haslamania

Randy Neal at KnoxViews has a good catch today. His advice? Get a room.

Thus begins the Haslam love-a-thon. Can action figures be far off? I want the cowboy one with the six gun.

Even the most jaded reader will get a little verklempt as Metro Pulse commenter Joe Sullivan writes, “Yet for me the rewards of having someone of Bill Haslam’s caliber as governor outweigh the risks of a temporary dislocation of city government.”

He had me at caliber.

Handy tip

Given what long time readers know of Politically Incorrect Dog’s flatulence, it should come as no surprise that the new dog food we’ve got him on is not going well. Seriously, never change a bully’s diet, if you can avoid it.

Victory in SF

So reports NRA: An NRA-led coalition of self-defense civil rights groups including the Second Amendment Foundation and the California Rifle & Pistol Association (CRPA) has prevailed in a Second Amendment lawsuit challenging a ban on firearm possession in San Francisco public housing residences.

Stealing laptops, taking your nail clippers, and fondling you: not just for airlines anymore

Or Meet the new boss.

The first federal evaluation of mass-transit security shows that more than 75% of the nation’s major rail and bus systems aren’t meeting Homeland Security guidelines.

By contrast, 96% of airlines are complying with security requirements, according to a new report by the department. The report doesn’t identify which rail and bus systems fell short.

The assessment comes as new Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says she plans to focus more on mass transit, possibly through “redeployment” of resources from other areas.

That mean taking the Security Theater from the airport and putting it in the bus & rail stations where it will do just as little?

What gun did you lust after until you fired one?

Saw this at ar15.com. Thought it was a good question.

My list includes: AK, MP-5, and HK91. Then, it occurred to me that there were more. And they all had one thing in common. Stamped receivers. I guess I just don’t like the clank sound.

Black on black violence

Clearly, the Violence Policy Center thinks that blacks should not be allowed to own guns.

That’s sarcasm for people who need to be told that.

Glenn and Helen interview Bill Haslam

Glenn and Helen sat down to interview Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam. You can see the interview here.

They ask him about his membership in Mayors Against Guns. He says it was probably a mistake to have joined. And that when it started, Bloomberg wasn’t in charge. He does not favor any more gun controls. He even bought his son a shotgun for Christmas.

Now, I’m pretty sure this has been a Bloomberg operation from the beginning. Haslam makes it sound as though there was a petition passed around at a mayoral meeting and a bunch of people signed it, including him. And since then, the focus of the group has changed. After all, what politician isn’t against illegal guns? Little did they know, they meant illegal guns in NYC, which is most of them.

I think Haslam laid out his case pretty well. He thought he signed up for one thing and it turned into another and he’s not real happy about it. He once again distances himself from Bloomberg. I still think he should withdraw from the group since his opponents have already distorted his record based on membership in the group and will likely continue to do so.

And they might mention someone you know. And that that someone was defending Haslam, for once.

Speaking of Chicago

Alan Gura reports that an appellate brief has been filed in the Chicago gun case:

All three remaining Chicago-area cases, ours and the two brought by the NRA against Chicago and Oak Park, have been consolidated on appeal.

Gun Safety

NSSF promotes gun safety in Chicago.

Stimulus bill

Looks to have passed the house. Probably a done deal. But only 12% is actually, you know, stimulus. The rest is vote-buying.

We’re screwed.

What is an illegal gun?

I mean, other than an unstamped NFA item of course.

In FL:

Pick up the phone, report an illegal firearm and pad your wallet by a $1,000 – that’s the crux of a new program being unveiled by Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers.

The new “Illegal Gun Bounty Program” has been in the works for months.

Seems to me it targets criminals with guns. Those guns technically aren’t illegal. However, a criminal in possession of one is illegal.

Even More Haslam and Guns

Michael Silence does some reporting:

I put a call into Haslam to get some response, and he graciously called me back. He said in retrospect he probably should not have signed a petition by the anti-gun group. But he noted at that time the first four or five goals of the group were planks “anyone would agree with. Too many of the wrong people have guns.”

After that, NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg got involved in the group. “I’m not him,” Haslam said, adding the group “did go a different direction than I thought.” And he added, “I had no intention then and no intention now to change any gun laws.” And he added he “fully supports the Second Amendment.”

Good. But:

Haslam didn’t directly answer the question if he would quit the group. But he did express concern that that would appear to be “pandering” to pro-gun folks.

He should pander to us. We vote.

More Haslam and Guns

Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam is running for governor. He belongs to a an anti-gun group called Mayors Against Illegal Guns, which keeps having members exit. One of his gubernatorial opponents says:

As for the Second Amendment, he parts ways with Mayor Haslam, comparing the idea of suing gun manufacturers for crime (which Haslam has gone on record supporting) akin to suing automobile manufactures for DUIs.

Now, I’ve followed the Haslam thing for a while. And I have never heard Haslam go on record as supporting that ridiculous notion. In fact, he has distanced himself from Bloomberg recently. The only way I know of that one could assert that is by his membership in Mayors Against Guns, who, as part of their platform, support that ridiculous idea.

Once again, Mr. Haslam, another reason to quit the group.

Clenched fist salute to AC.

Totems

The ATF arrested an Upper Receiver. Yes, ATF was ordered to arrest a gun part.

Interesting how ATF concludes it is readily convertible:

[A]ll it took was some metal, a length of chain, some duct tape and some plastic wire ties for the federal inspectors to make his gun part operate in that fashion [full auto – ed], he said he was told.

Wow, first shoestrings. Now chain, tape and wire ties. ZOMG. I have all that in my house. Clearly, that indicates constructive possession.

Update: Back story from David Hardy: BATFE originally ruled that the item was not a firearm, let alone an NFA one; it was a conversion kit. After Len gave some expert testimony in several cases against the agency, it reversed its ruling and held that the kit was an NFA firearm.

preemption

NE city repeals gun ban.

More Gillibrand on guns

Gillibrand faces crossfire on guns:

Kirsten Gillibrand, a newly minted senator, finds herself in something of a tug of war because of her positions on gun control legislation.

Downstate gun control advocates are expressing cautious optimism that Gillibrand, despite her 100 percent rating from the National Rifle Association, will temper her views now that she represents the entire state. Her Senate colleague, fellow Democrat Charles Schumer, has supported Gillibrand’s appointment, but he predicted “her views would evolve” on gun control.

Odd how Schumer and Clinton never wanted to temper their views to represent the entire state?

Reasoned Discoursetm

Say you do a post on guns. You get substantially everything wrong, including gun laws, types of guns, and everything else. Someone advises you of your error. You reply with:

I’ve been harassed by a commentor (sic).
So, I’ve had to pull the story.

And what a story it was. There can be no reasoning with some people.

Note: Believe it or not, there actually is a blog post buried under every annoying blog widget known to Al Gore’s Internets.

So, are The Beastie Boys now The Beastie Forty Somethings? Are Boyz II Men now just Men? And Young MC, is he now Old MC? These are the thoughts that keep me up at night.

What to do?

Yesterday, I scored an AR-15 lower receiver at a very reasonable price. What should I build with it? I’m thinking about doing a 6.8SPC build once Bison Armory gets their barrels up and running.

Gillibrand Flip?

Could be. In comments, BH link to this:

At the news conference, Ms. Gillibrand defended her pro-gun legislative stance, saying that she “very much believes in protecting hunter’s rights” and that the pastime is part of “heritage and culture” of New York state.

But she also said that now that she represented the entire state, urban gun control issues would become part of her advocacy work.

“There’s a lot of concerns in many of our city communities about gun violence, about keeping our children safe and keeping guns out of the hands of criminals,” she said. “Those are concerns I share.”

Looks like she is catering to the NYC crowd since they have the money. Bitter advocates supporting her candidacy. I probably would assuming she clears up what she means by the statements above.

Update: I should note that her statements do not indicate a flip per se. However, the NYT spin of her words indicate otherwise. After all, keeping our children safe and keeping guns out of the hands of criminals is something most folks agree with. It’s just how you do that which is the point of contention.
