Ammo returns?

Caleb says ammo is back. I stopped by Coal Creek Armory last week for the first time in a while and they seemed to have plenty of ammo. Prices seemed to have gone up a bit but that happens when supply meets demand. Also, they had a lot of black rifles and parts. The prices on those were reasonable. A lower for about $140. Looks like the Obama induced gun rush may finally have calmed down a bit.

How many?

We often hear 180M gun owners in the US. Or 200M guns out there. That number seems to be be understated.

In Illinois

The Illinois Farm Bureau may soon join the Illinois Sheriff’s Association in adopting a policy supporting legislation allowing the concealed carrying of firearms in the state.

Well, Cara hasn’t written anything about it.

A win for shooting ranges

Typical scenario these days: people move next to shooting range shocked that there’s a shooting range. Lawsuit ensues. David Hardy reports:

The Second Circuit affirmed the district court, which agreed with the EPA that the discharge of projectiles is part of their normal use, and firing them does not “discard” them within meaning of the law. It also affirmed a finding that the plaintiffs had failed to make out a case under the Clean Water Act.

Showdown in K-Town

The guns in parks issue was said to be resolved since Knoxville had an old law on the books banning possession in parks. Steve Hall has proposed an ordinance repealing the ban and the meeting is scheduled for tonight. This could be an interesting meeting as Stacey Campfield reports that Mayor Bill Haslam plans on weighing in on the issue. Haslam is running for governor and made the mistake of joining Mayors Against Guns. He later realized his mistake and quit the group (Good for him). This could get interesting.

Meanwhile, in Oak Ridge:

A proposed petition drive to trigger a referendum on overturning a City Council resolution banning guns in city parks has run into problems before it could begin.

According to state law, the Tennessee Constitution and Oak Ridge’s City Charter, referendums on such resolutions can’t be held, City Attorney Ken Krushenski said Monday.

In NY

In a post 9/11 security crackdown, NYPD cited a local gun shop for ‘security breaches’ that consisted of an unobserved counter, hole in the fence, and unlocked safes. The business license was suspended and inventory confiscated. Good news:

Bleg: Virus Protection

What’s a good light weight anti-virus program? Use Norton at the office and it sucks. Like all Norton products, it’s bloatware. It bogs down the system all the time. At home, I have AVG Free. It has, apparently, turned into spamware itself, always installing its tool bar in my web browser.

What do you use?

Big Brother In Your Yard Sale

James Rosen:

If you’re planning a garage sale or organizing a church bazaar, you’d best beware: You could be breaking a new federal law. As part of a campaign called Resale Roundup, the federal government is cracking down on the secondhand sales of dangerous and defective products.

The initiative, which targets toys and other products for children, enforces a new provision that makes it a crime to resell anything that’s been recalled by its manufacturer.

“Those who resell recalled children’s products are not only breaking the law, they are putting children’s lives at risk,” said Inez Tenenbaum, the recently confirmed chairwoman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

I’m guessing in my house right now, I have roughly eleventy billion children’s toys. And we’ve been known to have the occasional yard sale. Does anyone really think I (or anyone else) is going to look up whether or not the My Little Pony Ponyville Starsong’s Stageshow Bus has been recalled?

Also, I have a friend who runs a kids’ consignment shop. Something like this could put her out of business.

Guns in Parks in Knoxville

I mentioned the city council agenda item earler, now Stacey Campfield notes the gun owners are getting active:

We need all who can possibly do so to come to this meeting. If you wish to speak to Council on this issue, call the City Recorder’s Office at 865-215-2075 to sign up. Sign up EARLY Monday, August 24.

Come dressed for business. No weapons allowed in the building. Arrive early, because you will have to go through a security checkpoint.

Good one

Amateur Gun Nuttery

I mentioned before how I created a gun nut out of a fellow parent at our daycare. In an update to that, he got into AR-15s. And, though I haven’t updated on that in a while, he has bought an AR-15, another Glock, a 22, and tons of ammo. He’s looking at several other guns now too. Good times. But this ain’t a post about that, it’s a post about this:

We ran into each other at a birthday party recently and, as is always the case, started talking guns. He was up to date on all the guns in bars, parks, firearms freedom act, and all the other state-level goings on. Double success! Not only was he into guns, he was also paying attention to the political issue. As we were talking, I asked him if he’d gotten a handgun carry permit. He said he had not and I told him that he probably should if he ever wanted to carry it. He said he had not and his amateur gun nuttery kicked in. He said he wasn’t going to get one because he didn’t want to be registered as a gun owner. He explained that he did not want to be on record with the state as a gun owner just in case. And the just in case, of course, meant some ban or some such. I said to him that the likelihood of an all out ban was roughly zero. I also said I knew folks who were of the same opinion.

But, I told him, not me. I have a permit. I have a lawfully owned suppressor that is registered to me. And I’m pretty sure all my weapons involved a 4473. And that I had no issue with whoever knowing that. In fact, I want it to be known. I don’t stay in the closet with people I know nor with the state. In the event that roughly zero percent likelihood came to fruition, I’d still want it known. I’m ornery like that.

Given that that is my general attitude, I don’t understand Kevin’s post stating he will not register. Well, let me rephrase that I understand not registering because it’s simply an overreach of government authority and, frankly, none of their business. But I do not understand this notion of keeping it a secret from the .gov. I want it known. If, as they say, it only leads to confiscation then I’ll turn mine in. Ammo first. But it will not come to that.

Arthur Frommer, who apparently is known as a traveler, is telling people to avoid Arizona because of their wild and crazy gun laws that allow black men to carry weapons openly. Trouble for Frommer is that Arizona’s laws regarding firearms are pretty consistent with most other states. Even Frommer’s home state.

In Knoxville

As it stands, seems city law already bans weapons in parks. On the 8/25 meeting agenda is a resolution introduced by Steve Hall that reads:

An Ordinance to amend Section 20-60 of the Knoxville City Code so as to delete therefrom the provisions prohibiting the use or possession of firearms or weapons within City parks.
