How many?

We often hear 180M gun owners in the US. Or 200M guns out there. That number seems to be be understated.

The world Small Arms Survey claimed we were at 90 guns per 100 citizens back in ’07. I found their methodology would undercount substantial numbers, so my SWAG is we’re looking at roughly 1 gun per American at this point, if not more. Anybody claiming 200 million should be laughed out the room.

Well, we’ve been hearing those numbers for a few years now.

Add to that the reports of millions of guns being sold since November ’08 and I’m sure the number is closer to 300M.

Agree 300M guns is likely more accurate. I do wonder, though, how many of those guns went to people who used to have 4 guns and now have 10 (yeah, that’s my count)?
I hit Y2K with 2 shotguns and two rifles and maybe 200 rounds. Now I have 2 shotguns, 5 rifles, and 3 handguns, and close to 5000 rounds.
Question is, how many of the last 15 or 20 million guns sold went to new gunners, and how many went to old men like me who just want a rifle like the one we carried in basic training (Garand) or when we were young troopers on station (Carbine)?

Based on what I saw in a number of gunshops – and heard from others – quite a lot of those new guns went to new gun owners.

Quite possibly more to new folks than to folks who already had at least one.

While NICS checks are a useful number, they don’t directly equate to “number of guns sold/put into circulation”. Some people don’t need to go through NICS when purchasing a gun, e.g. if you have a concealed weapons permit that can be accepted in lieu of making the phone call. So, while the NICS check number is still a good statistic, I’d say it’s a bit lower than number of actual guns sold/put into circulation.

Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
