Shooting at a newspaper

Remember, initial reports are almost always wrong. But it looks like four dead by a guy used a shotgun.

Wait, we’re “customers”?

The IRS’s Customer Service Is As Terrible As You’d Expect

This reminds me of a conversation I had with IRS “customer service” once. They had made a mistake and I, of course, was on the hook for their fuck up so I had to call them. Resolved the issue. Then this conversation happened:

Agent: Sir, there’s another problem with your account.

Me: My account?

Agent: Yes, there’s something we need to . . .

Me: *interrupts* I can promise you I have never opened “an account” with you.

Agent: Well, I, err, uhm . . . Sir, I just need . . .

Me: *interrupts* I mean, if I don’t pay you, you’ll send me to prison. That doesn’t seem like much of “an account” to me.

Then I let it go.

Shotgun terms

A list. I’m new to this shotgat business so I found the clarification useful. Unfortunately, it’s been OMFG degrees outside and my desire to shoot hasn’t yet exceeded by desire to be in the air conditioning.

Kennedy is retiring

The swinging vote on the court, Anthony Kennedy, has announced his retirement. The other 8 justices, in highly political cases, tend to vote lock step. Though Roberts seems to have that penchant occasionally. Kennedy was the one who didn’t. When Heller was in the works, I remember talking to people about how it was a bit frightening that it came down to Kennedy, who had disappointed conservatives on several occasions with his vote. But I digress.

Here’s a list of Trump’s potential nominees. I’d like to see Mike Lee.

Maybe the new justice will allow the court to stop ignoring the “optional second amendment“.

Eric Cantor part 2?

A commie in NY has defeated a ten term incumbent Democrat:

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old Latina running her first campaign, ousted 10-term incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley in New York’s 14th congressional district on Tuesday, CNN projects, in the most shocking upset of a rollicking political season.

I’m guessing there won’t be a blue wave but the blue will get bluer.

A civil rights victory

The Supreme Court has ruled that unions can no longer force employees they allegedly represent to pay dues:

The Supreme Court dealt labor unions a sharp defeat Wednesday, ruling that teachers, police officers and other public employees cannot be forced to pay dues or fees to support their unions.

By a 5-4 vote, the justices overturned a 41-year-old precedent and ruled that the 1st Amendment protects these employees from being required to support a private group whose views may differ from theirs.

How something like this was allowable in the first place is astonishing. If you’re a member of these unions, your money is going to Democrats whether you like it or not.

I’m of the opinion that unions have run their course. It’s arguable that there was a need for them back when child labor and poor working conditions were a real thing. But that stuff has largely been regulated since. Now, they seem to exist for excessive perks, graft, and to make union leaders a lot of money, while providing little.

And Glenn with this zinger:

Of course, if the unions provided value, they wouldnt have to force people to pay dues.

Heh. Indeed.

But stopping power

Your caliber sucks and you’re holding it wrong. Wait, that’s not how that goes.

Kidding aside, some useful information there.

Bump stock rule change

Today is the last day to comment on the proposed changes. You can comment here.

ATF is looking like it will reverse it’s 10 previous rulings that these are not machine guns, at the direction of Trump and Sessions. And they’re doing so by disregarding the law.

Florida Policeman

Florida has some bizarre carry laws, such as no open carry. But there are exceptions if one is hunting, fishing, juggling chipmunks, or whatever other arbitrary thing. So, Florida Carry has a regular event where a bunch of open carry activists go fishing while strapped. Turns out, Florida Policeman was unaware of said law, or didn’t care, and got all pointy with his gun.

The local media, however, made the event sound so peaceful.

Some idiot keeping a gun in his pocket tested out a couch at IKEA. The gun fell out of his pocket and was found by a 6 year old, who fired it.

Narrative

The narrative is that the big ol’ mean NRA was influenced by the Russians in supporting Trump. The reality:

In a letter to Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden, the NRA said it took 23 contributions – mostly membership dues – from Russians or Americans living in Russia, totaling about $2,500.

Everything else is speculation.

IRS Targeting

For years, the blame was put on Obama for the IRS targeting conservative groups. Turns out, some pressure was put on them to target the TEA party by the biggest piece of shit in politics, John McCain:

Why are anti-gun activists so violent?

Anti-gun Rep Maxine Waters is calling on people to harass and intimidate those she disagrees with politically.

Between that and the harassment of two Trump officials at restaurants this week, it’s a matter of time before someone gets hurt or worse.

What did five fingers say to the face?
