My new carry rig

Oleg has a pic. Michael at The Holster Site made me a custom piece. Instead of babying it, I decided to just strap the whole thing on and go to gun school with it. I figure that’d be as good a test as anything. A few initial impressions:

That is one stiff belt. I like it. Keeps the gun in place nicely. Had to work it a bit to get it loose enough to wear. That’s not a bug, that’s a feature.

The holster is snug too and requires working it in. My first draw at gun school was real snug because I hadn’t worked it in. But after doing that 30 or so times, it was nice. It did ensure I had a snug grip on the pistol though.

After wearing it all day on day one and two and running the rig through gun school, it still looks brand new.

Check out more of his belts here and more holsters here.

A plan

One of the highlights of the LuckyGunner shoot was hearing Gene from The CalGuns Foundation speak. The good thing about current strategy is we have good lawyers. The bad news is we don’t have enough good gun lawyers.

But I was impressed at how detailed and focused he was. Lots of stuff coming down the pike.

Oh No! They Have A Coalition

US and Mexican groups are going to hold their breath until Barack Obama does somethingtm about gun laws:

The first demand being made of Obama is an immediate ban on imports of assault rifles into the United States “because most are (later) sent as contraband to Mexico,” the groups said.

Uhm, that’s already done. Sporting purposes language and all. I know you’re not serious because you don’t the laws nor what the president can do. The rest of their ‘demands’ consist of giving ATF more power. Really? The same ATF that smuggled over 1,000 guns in to Mexico?

Notably absent from their demands is effective border control.

Good advice

Don’t buy cheap guns. Well, there are a few inexpensive guns that are reliable. But you know what he means.

No, Sean, a glock 18 is not useless. It’s one of the most efficient ways to quickly turn money into noise.

Gun School

Also, at the LuckyGunner shoot, I took a handgun class. The class was offered by Tom Givens of Rangemaster. The only other real gun school I went to was centered around competition because it was offered by, well, a competition shooter. This one was self defense oriented, with a focus on retention as well as shooting. And I was still using some stuff that was competition oriented. I mentioned that to one of the assistant instructors joked that if IDPA had people trying to disarm them and shooting back, it’d be a much different sport.

Also, the course emphasized trigger reset, which was neat. But I discovered something: the M&P does not have a nice crisp reset. It’s smooth. One of the instructors said that’s what happens when engineers and not shooters designed guns. The made it to be smooth. He recommended I try an Apex trigger. So, I may pick one up.

Back to the course, guys that do this sort of thing are a wealth of knowledge and they share it. About 45 minutes in, WizardPC looks at me and says that alone was worth the trip.

More on the class from Sebastian and MJM.
