On that gun database we don’t have *wink wink*

In comments here, Curtis highlights this:

…she [Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano – ed.] will give Mexican authorities access to a government database to trace the U.S. origin of seized weapons.

And he responds with:

Is that the database that they weren’t legally supposed to build/maintain? Populated with data from 4473s and/or NICS checks – which data was legally only to be kept for a short period of time (30-60days?)?

Now, my understanding is that there is not to be a database of gun owners. A database of guns is fine and dandy so that police can do traces on firearms, which is pretty much a de facto list of gun owners. Now, if our .gov will hand it over to Mexico, does anyone really believe that the Tiahrt Amendment will restrict law enforcement access to trace data? In other news, I guess cities that want to get the info that Tiahrt says they can’t have, they could just ask Mexico for it.

We’re Number One

Just about every time Tennessee makes #1 on some list, it’s for something dumb. Today’s is that we have the country’s highest tax on beer.

Via AC who says: Now, Don’t Go Doing Anything Stupid Like Dressing Up Like Indians And Pouring A Bunch Into The Cumberland. That is stupid. The steps of the capitol is a much better location.

Quote of the day

Heh.

Gun trends

Yeah, when did all that happen? I’m thinking during the same time period that SKSs went from $59.95 to $325. Could be wrong though.

Grab some popcorn

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Ownership attempts to call out Gillibrand:

A gun-control group is calling on Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) to sponsor a gun-control bill to show that she’s evolving from being a favorite of the gun lobby to a true blue-state senator.

“She’s saying she realizes that she represents a statewide constituency,” said Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. “One way she could prove she has evolved is to push this issue.”

Helmke said his group is seeking a meeting with Gillibrand to ask her to support legislation to require background checks on gun sales at gun shows, commonly referred to by activists as “closing the gun-show loophole.” A message left with Gillibrand’s office was not returned Tuesday afternoon.

This could get interesting.

Maybe she could sponsor the national reciprocity bill.

Right to privacy: Not just for abortions anymore

In Tennessee:

What some are calling a matter of privacy, others are calling a dangerous idea. At issue is whether or not applications for gun-carry permits should be kept confidential.

Getting a permit isn’t only about learning the rules; a lot of personal information must be given up.

“You have to answer a lot of questions,” said John Harris, executive director of the Tennessee Firearms Association. “Like, for example, ‘How were you discharged from the military?’ ‘Have you ever been addicted to any kind of alcohol or other substances?’ ‘Have you ever had any psychiatric problems?’ A lot of information is disclosed on the forms that really shouldn’t be public.”

That’s information that many permit owners don’t want out there along with their addresses and what kind of guns they own.

A few years ago, all of that information was published by the Tennessean, infuriating many of the private citizens on that list.

Well, here’s hoping. Also, Kent Williams did say before he wanted to fix some gun issues in the state. This looks like one of them:

In addition, new House Speaker Kent Williams has said he will break ties in the case of some Second Amendment issues.

You’re doing it wrong

Seen at GunPundit:

The country’s new homeland security chief said Friday that the Obama administration is mapping out a crackdown on the flow of firearms smuggled to Mexico’s murderous drug gangs operating along the Texas border.

Janet Napolitano said she had directed the Customs and Border Protection service “to find guns going south and interdict them.” Additionally, the homeland security secretary said she will give Mexican authorities access to a government database to trace the U.S. origin of seized weapons.

You know what could have an impact on that? Effective border security. Seems odd to me that there will now likely be more effort on our government’s part designed to keep guns out of Mexico than there will be to keep drugs and illegal immigrants out of the US.

Influence

From Sebastian who says the Brady Campaign has been greatly overstating its influence on the Democratic victory of 2008, comes Howard Nemerov’s three parter on the Brady Camp’s impact on the election:

Part 2

Part 3.

NOLA Stuff

Last night, I caught a bit of the Gun Nuts Radio Show. They were talking to Gordon Hutchinson who wrote a book about the New Orleans Gun Grab. He noted that the media was there and witnessing the gun grabs. But being media sorts, they thought this was perfectly fine. Of course they did.

Update: Listen here.

Not recommended

Occupied Nashville notes this bizarre attachment to mount a pistol on your AR-15. If you place one on your weapon, you have likely created a short barreled rifle subject to NFA taxes etc. Could lead to prison time.

More Zombies

In Illinois. Well, the election is over. No doubt, they are returning to their graves.

I would have preferred Gitmo

Seen at Joe’s:

Rep. Alcee L. Hastings, D-Fla., has introduced to the House of Representatives a new bill, H.R. 645, calling for the secretary of homeland security to establish no fewer than six national emergency centers for corralling civilians on military installations.

Text of the bill.

Do any of these people pay taxes?

And Daschle.

Oh, and Geithner doesn’t like to pay taxes either but he’s not rooming under the bus. He makes mistakes and blames Turbo Tax. And others make mistakes too.

And PGP notes that while Obama was vetting gun owners from his cabinet, maybe he should have asked if they were tax cheats.

VA Gun Show Bill

Nope.

Update: Uh oh, came back.

Clinton speaks on guns

Bill:

Nobody wants to repeal the Second Amendment, and nobody wants to keep you out of the deer woods, but wouldn’t it be nice if your children didn’t have to worry about being mowed down by an assault weapon when they turn the corner?

First, it’s not that great of a worry statistically. Second, Bill Clinton of all people should know the political folly of supporting such a notion.

That newfangled radio

On gun nuts radio:

Our guest for tonight is Gordon Hutchinson, author of the Great New Orleans Gun Grab, who will be joining us live at 9pm. After an initial Q&A session with Breda and I, we will as always open up the phones to take questions from the audience, you can join us live by calling (347) 539-5436 to join the conversation!

One got through

Somehow, we have one in East Tennessee. Who fell asleep at the switch?

A letter to the editor from one Jim Winston:

According to patrons at these shows, the AK-47 carbine rifle brings up to $1,600. These type weapons serve no purpose in a society with a professional army and local police departments. Fully automatic carbines and pistols are not sporting weapons. The primary use of these weapons is superior fire power over the police and army.

And there are no fully automatic anything for sale at these gun shows for $1,600. It’s OK. I can see how you’d be confused since the press lies to you about assault weapons. Continuing:

Too often, these weapons fall into the hands of thugs, the mentally ill or rural terrorist types. We are guaranteed the right to own our pistols and rifles by our Constitution. But it is out of control now.

I guess the only bleeding hearts are the innocent victims left lying at the crime scene.

Our legislators should avoid lobbyists of these gun profiteers and stand up for the police and all innocent victims murdered with these weapons.

Ok, then.

Zoiks: An unusual number of journalists from prominent, mainstream organizations started new government jobs in January, providing new kindling to the debate over whether Mr. Obama is receiving unusually favorable treatment in the news media.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
