Watch your 6

You know, I tend not to place a whole lot of faith when experts say a terror attack is imminent. I mean, they’ve said it for the last six years. Still, I think it’s worth passing along that terrorism expert Juval Aviv says:

I predict, based primarily on information that is floating in Europe and the Middle East, that an event is imminent and around the corner here in the United States. It could happen as soon as tomorrow, or it could happen in the next few months. Ninety days at the most.

Notably different this time (and something I’ve touched on before) is this:

What they’re going to do is hit six, seven or eight cities simultaneously to show sophistication and really hit the public. This time, which is the message of the day, it will not only be big cities. They’re going to try to hit rural America. They want to send a message to rural America: “You’re not protected. If you figured out that if you just move out of New York and move to Montana or to Pittsburgh, you’re not immune. We’re going [to] get you wherever we can and it’s easier there than in New York.”

Via B-Ho.

Cool

The guys at Operation Grim are trying to get their model in Maxim magazine. Today Operation Grim reports:

We have now spoken with Maxim three times. The official response is “We definitely think this is awesome and we want to do it. We just need to get the editor’s permission. I’d say we’re 95% going to do it.”

So SHORT VERSION: You guys are making this happen – PLEASE keep the emails coming!!! We’re almost there!!!

What media bias?

GunTards on media bias:

The fact of the matter is that the media does not lean “conservative” or “liberal.” Mainstream news organizations are not anti-gun so much as they are pro-fear. Humanity’s oldest and strongest emotion is money in the bank if you know how to channel it, and the news media, much like the Republican party, have mastered the art.

I’ve said before (though I’m not sure if I did a post on it) that the media has four kinds of bias:

Sensationalism bias: such as the fear and other PSH* or any other thing they can blow out of proportion thereby causing you to run to the store to buy duct tape and sheets of plastic for your windows. You know, to keep terrorists out. Or they find something that enrages some group of people.

Establishment bias: the media is entrenched with the establishment. If they’re too hard on them, they won’t get invited to the parties any more. That’s why you’ll rarely (if ever) see a media piece that takes a critical look at, say, the drug war or other complex social issues.

Corporate bias: Who owns NBC? Who owns any media outlet? Look it up, it’s fun.

Stupidity bias: No matter how common sense something is, the media will find some dumb ass. It’s true. You got your Fred Phelps and other loonies. I swear to Jebus, the press could do an article on why it’s mean and evil to stomp on kittens and then they’d find some dumbass who says No, it’s OK. The kittens like it. They’ll present the other side no matter how silly as though they have a point.

* BTW, I keep starting these little sayings and others pick up on them (like unpossible; pants-shitting hysterics; like you and me, only better; etc.). How cool is that?

Like you and me, only better

David notes that the LA Sheriff gives out gun carry permits to famous people like Ben Affleck (who, btw, says he is a second amendment guy). Also, in John Lott’s Freedomnomics, there is a chapter on Crime and Punishment that notes an increase in carry permits in NYC. Holders of said permits include, of course, a long list of famous and powerful people, like Donald Trump and Imus.

Both cities make it impossible for regular people to get said permits.

Update: John Lott corrects me noting that: Note my book doesn’t say that permits increased in New York City, just that it was higher than most people might think. Whoops, sorry. Didn’t have it right in front of me. But, hey, I’m reading footnotes too.

Traction Control – FFL

US Citizen is a class 3 dealer: Do your research, then Name your Price. His commercial site also has a lot of good information.

What TSA really stands for

Funny, but not really haha.

Types of FFLs

Good to know.

Eminent Domain Abuse

This time, at the federal level. Seems the .gov (particularly, the IRS and DEA) had a lease expire. So, instead of taking their hit and moving on, the .gov went before a judge and, under color of law, forced the owner to extend the lease. This is also halting a major skyscraper renovation project. The judge in this case must be retarded. Or just a disgrace to his office.

Update: Fred Thompson on eminent domain.

Uprising

I’m kinda worried about dogs. It seems lately there have been a few dogs that have figured out how to shoot people. In Memphis, there was another case of that. Via Mike.

WTF?

Not for the squeamish. Automatic Income Limiters is probably the funniest thing I’ve read today, though.

Enraged

People say to me Hey, Uncle, you don’t blog much about the eighth amendment. And I say Well, I’m generally a fan. Too bad it prevents the .gov from taking Joshua Komisarjevsky and Steven Hayes; nailing their sacks to the floor, dousing them with gasoline, and sticking a sparkler or maybe a firecracker in their urethrae. With a fire extinguisher on hand so the process can be repeated. Or, you know, locking them in a room with the nearest kin of the victims, a pair of pliers, a mallet, some sea salt, and a blowtorch. But I guess it’s a good thing we can’t do that.

Note: I typed this a couple days ago and didn’t publish it with the thought that maybe I’d calm down about it. I didn’t.

I am the evil gun lobby

Heh:

The gun bloggers made the Zumbo incident national. Now they’ve noticed people actually hunt with evil black rifles. We are the new Evil Gun Lobby.

Where does the buck stop Mayor Ragsdale?

For some time citizens of Knox County have wondered if County Mayor Mike Ragsdale was the Emperor with no clothes. No matter what kind of mistake was made on the western end of the sixth floor of the City County Building or how serious that mistake is, it is always passed off as some trivial issue such as a bookkeeping mistake or clerical error. The news is always given by an underling and along with a positive quote from the County Mayor.

One Knox County taxpayer has had enough. Lewis Cosby called and talked with the County Mayor on the Hallerin Hill radio program on WNOX and questioned the Mayor Ragsdale for several minutes about the P-Card (purchasing credit card) abuse from the Mayor and his staff as well as the travel expenses for the Mayor, his Chief of Staff Mike Arms, Senior Communications Director Dwight Van de Vate and Chief Financial Officer John Werner. Mayor Ragsdale was very positive and upbeat. When Lewis Cosby asked the Mayor if a person could examine the P-Card statements and receipts Mayor Ragsdale said, “Come on up anytime, I’ve never met you, I like to have a chance to talk to you, swing by someday.”

WBIR reports that Lewis Cosby did exactly that. In a television interview with WBIR Mr. Cosby, a former CPA who at one time audited Knox County government, expressed his shock with what he had found. Lewis Cosby said, “In all my career, these records as to expenditures and lack of documentation is some of the worst I have ever seen. Records are missing, receipts are missing, entire statements for certain people are missing.”

Lewis Cosby compiled a list of 59 questions about the P-Cards plus more about the Hospitality Account. Mr. Cosby says the Hospitality Account is negative and has been negative for two years. He can’t understand why the Mayor kept spending.

You can watch the Lewis Cosby interview on WBIR here.

Ramesh Ponnuru is singing the praises of the NRA and notes the power they wield. However, he gets some things wrong.

Dogfighting

It hurts more than the dogs. There is a lot of crime associated with it. Joe has some interesting figures on it.

Deserving Neither

Via MKS, Russ McBee notes:

An ABC News poll (PDF) has shown that the majority of Americans seem to prefer a police state.

[…]

I find it shocking that 71 percent said they favored surveillance cameras, and only 25 percent were opposed.

Update: Barry doesn’t dig McBee’s ditch, citing he’s large on the hyperbole. I agree. But the short version of what Barry says is: you have a right to privacy except when you don’t. Now, I don’t mind, to use Barry’s example, cameras put up by non-governmental entities to monitor their property. Heck, the office I’m in now has them. I do, however, mind big brother doing it. Just because I got nothing to hide, it don’t mean you should be looking.

Big Bro

Via Squeaky, comes this: Oakland, California to lobby legislature to allow 24-hour video surveillance with red light camera system.

But that will never happen here. I mean, that’s in California, which is a whole other country.

Richard Cohen: Guns are evil and bad and cause crime – except when I want one

Cohen sayeth:

The Marshal Dillon Rule is based on common sense, not to mention the law of averages: The more guns you have, the greater the chance they will be used.

Really? You got any actual, you know, statistics and figures and cites to back that up? Because, err, no one else does. And you don’t even seem to buy your own argument:

Mind you, while I subscribe to the Marshal Dillon Rule, I am on record as being sympathetic to those who like to keep a gun in the house. This is because I was burglarized one very dark night by a klutz of a thief who burst though my back door and ran around the first floor making so much noise that I was certain he was coming for me. (This was before the deranged had recourse to e-mail.) I very much wanted a gun — not to whack the intruder but merely to protect my life.

So, about that law of averages? Anyhoo, he chimes in with the non-starter that you don’t give college kids guns. A position I concur with since your average college kid cannot legally buy them anyway. But he doesn’t realize that some college kids aren’t college kids but are adults who are lawfully allowed to carry concealed weapons. Yet that permit is invalid on a campus. And you think maybe they want to protect their lives?

Or put another way: Liberal Washington Post Columnist Attacks Fred Thompson For Being Too Pro-Gun Rights. Shocking!!!

Gun Porn 2

Here’s some more CZs, only without chicks.

They are bad this year

The other day, I went outside to fix Junior’s seat on the bike. As I was tightening a bolt, I looked at my leg and there were five mosquitoes bellied up to the buffet. Ugh. I looked at Junior and she had some on her too. Took her inside, I hit myself with some Off and continued working. Anyway, via MCB, we learn that some plants repel the little buggers. Good to know. We have a Rosemary bush (for eating) on the side yard. Now, I’m gonna put a couple by the front and back porches.

Mo’ caca

So, Macca was found to be a Brady Board Member. You can read about it here. Well, I should be clear. A lot of circumstantial evidence indicated who Macca likely was. And I’m torn between revealing that evidence or not. (ETA: reveal evidence not identity) Sure, I could (with Sebastian’s permission) state how but then others following in Macca’s steps would know how we (ETA: and by we, I mean Sebastian) did it.

Macca has now denied it. Macca claims we’re avoiding the issue by drawing attention Macca’s ties with the Brady Camp. I issued Macca a challenge:

you can post at my blog whenever you want. I’ll set you up as an author. You can make your case. I and my readers will make ours. Comments there will be welcomed.

I doubt Macca will take me up on it. And, boy, would that annoy readers.

Anyway, here’s some thoughts:

Macca may be denying it because Macca’s antics were not sanctioned by (or even known about by) the BC.

We’ve not publicly outed Macca for a few reasons and they are:

  • I don’t think outing people serves any particular purpose.
  • As someone who blogs pseudonymously, I can see why someone would. However, I don’t hold myself out as someone I am not.
  • If we outed Macca, there would be allegations of The Evil Gun Lobby picking on some poor activist.
  • The whole reasoned discourse series over at the Brady Blog was the justification for their shutting down comments.

We’ll probably see some press about how those poor, poor souls at the BC had to shut down comments because of the vile rhetoric and threats from the pro-gun side, what with all their facts and sources and stuff. They’ll cite the reasoned discourse series, even though those comments did not appear on the blog.

The BC has figured out how to turn off trackbacks now. Teehee. So much for that reasoned discourse, eh?

Switch roles for a moment and assume it was the NRA shutting down reasoned discourse. It’d get a write up in the NYT and the WaPo.

Update: BTW, in comments, Jared states that:

Kelli [the other anti-gun commenter at the Brady blog – ed] is exactly who she says she is. I’ve verified it through documentation available to me. I will not stand for her arguments but I will personally attest to her honesty in identifying herself to the extent that she has.

    Good to know.

    Unstumped

I asked about this belt-fed revolver. Looks like I got an answer from SDC in comments:

It’s a Josselyn chain pistol, in 22 rimfire. It was patented January 23, 1866, by Harry Josselyn, in Roxbury, Mass. See “Firearms Curiosa”, by Lewis Winant.
