News or Press Release?

Thursday, April 21st, 2005

Long time readers know that SayUncle often gets Google News alerts that are nothing more that VPC press releases. Paul Graham has an essay about a related phenomenon, the “press hit.” One of the most surprising things I discovered during my brief business career was the existence of the PR industry, lurking like a huge, […]

Google Gun Bias Update

Thursday, March 3rd, 2005

I have chided Google News (more specifically, Google News Alerts) for having an anti-gun bias. Essentially, their Alerts service would always alert me to press releases from anti-gun groups like the VPC, MMM, and the Brady Bunch. However, never anything from pro-gun groups. Recently, that has changed. It is sending me press releases from CCRKBA […]

More Google News Silliness

Monday, February 7th, 2005

Michelle Malkin notes that her and LGF are not listed as part of Google News (whereas Democratic Underground is) and that Google sent a letter to her explaining why. A part of the letter: We do not include news-related blogs or other news-related sites that are written and maintained by a single individual. Similarly, we […]

Google Gun Bias (and some other things)

Wednesday, May 19th, 2004

I use Google news alerts to keep me up to date on the assault weapons ban and other things. Google news alerts allows you to enter words and phrases (like Assault Weapons and Pit Bull) and any story that contains those words will be emailed to you. Good concept. I’ve discussed the fact that Google […]

In Cali

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

The Open Carry Ban that didn’t pass has now passed the senate. Off to the governor. A part of me wants it to pass so the law can be challenged. ETA: Or maybe not. The press has released a couple of stories about it that don’t seem consistent. Stay tuned.

iPad

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Stopped by Best Buy the other day for some office supplies. Had a opportunity to play with the iPad. It was slick. Fast, pretty, easy to handle. I was impressed. I’ll probably never buy one because it is 1) made by Apple and 2) while it’s neat, I have other things that are cheaper that […]

We’re all racist now

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

People have their delicate sensibilities all atwitter because some one you would have never otherwise heard of forwarded an image of Michelle Obama making an unflattering facial expression. Said gesture was then compared to a monkey making the same facial expression. You can see the image and some righteous indignation here. One of the reasons […]

Gun suit denied consideration

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

The supreme court let stand a lower ruling telling Michael Bloomberg that the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act means exactly what it says. The NRA brings the presser: Today, the U.S. Supreme Court denied consideration of New York City and Washington, D.C. lawsuits, New York v. Beretta and Lawson v. Beretta, respectively, that […]

Good

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

House passes bill to ease DC’s gun laws: The pro-gun majority in the House moved Wednesday to compel the nation’s capital to broaden the rights of its residents to buy and own firearms, including semiautomatic weapons. Critics, led by the District of Columbia’s sole delegate to Congress, decried the action. They said the vote tramples […]

Desperation

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

Seems with the recent and many losses of the anti-gunners, they’re pulling out all the pants-shitting hysterics: The Smoking Gun: NRA Admits it Does Not Support Criminal Background Checks for All Gun Sales Stop Handgun Violence, a non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention of gun violence, today released on-the-record quotes from a National Rifle Association […]

NRA Candidate Grades

Tuesday, April 18th, 2006

First, a side note: I was trying to find some info on candidates’ positions on gun control. So, I Googled their names plus the phrase gun control. One of the links that always showed up was the Brady Campaign’s press releases. Something that never showed up was the NRA’s press release nor did their grading […]

The sky is still falling

Thursday, January 27th, 2005

In an update to the FN Pistol non-controversy, the Brady Campaign has issued a press release urging congress to ban the gun. Nevermind that the gun isn’t available to the public, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms notes that the round is not armor piercing. The anti-gunners always need a bogeyman, even if they […]

Flooding the zone

Wednesday, July 14th, 2004

I’m not linking them, but today my Google News Alerts for Assault Weapons Ban sent me links to five news items err press releases from the VPC, Join Together, etc., that said Bush needed to act or the ban would expire. I guess since they grow more desperate they feel the need to flood the […]

It’s raining propaganda

Michael Zitz, call your office

Wednesday, April 14th, 2004

Here’s some history on the little tussle between myself and Mr. Michael Zitz: First Entry His email to me and my response His second email to me and my response If someone accused me of either 1) inadequate research or 2) outright lying, then I would address either of those concerns. I would not change […]

More non-existent liberal bias in the Republican controlled media conglomerate

Friday, March 19th, 2004

Someone explain to me why it is that when I go the Google News Alert page and enter Assault Weapons that JoinTogether, a blatantly agenda driven organization, shows up as news. Yet, the NRA’s (another agenda driven organization) press releases don’t? Update: Turns out to me that is similar to other news.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
