Then and now

Tam on perspective. I’m not at all of the doom and gloom mindset. I just find the present to have this surreal quality to it.

Anyone who says that now is not worse than then is either a blind naïve moron or thinks that everyone else is. We know the former is not the case so we must assume that the latter is.

Even the cited parallels (ie ISIS et al are not the Nazis; no, they are far far worse and more dangerous to the world at large, and Ferguson is not Watts; no it is a microcosm of a widespread and state-sponsored new racism with far more wide-reaching and long-lasting harmful potential) are incredibly wrong, meant only to smugly criticize those who see otherwise and earn brownie points from those who are idolized.

Surreal? Yes, that smarmy little post indeed is.

I don’t know. I lived through the 70s too. The outlook then looked pretty grim. Granted we didn’t have ISIS but we had a president that forced out a stable friend (the Shah) and let him be replaced with the regime running Iran now, that let the Russian bear repress Eastern Europe and invade Afghanistan, and cut the military to the point that enough helicopters couldn’t make to Desert 1 in flying condition to rescue our hostages.

Is there a Ronald Reagan in the current field? I don’t know. But in the 1980 race the Republican was pretty crowded and at the start, Reagan was far from a sure thing.

Will it get better or worse? I have no idea but its up to us the voters which way things go to a point. But a couple of things are worth remembering: something that can’t continue won’t; and like Greece, we may someday run out of money.

We still have (Minimum) wage controls, and it’s still illegal to mint your own currency.

Mike v., At this point I’m nostalgic for old jimmy, I lived through that crap too.

ISIS? They can be crushed the moment we get a real president.
They are not a real threat. That part of her post is correct.

We can own gold now? As long as they allow it. Whoopie!

I remember the 1970s & 1980s. I was a lot younger and thinner and better looking then, and young women were much more interested in me than they are now.

So yes, it was a better time then.

Other than that? Every day has its challenges, it is our daily task to meet them.

  6. Matthew Carberry Says:

Along with temporary wage and price controls, 1971 also saw permanent legislation making firearms carry on passenger aircraft a crime go into effect.

1973 brought mandatory screening with magnetometers, beginning our habitual compliance with Federally-mandated searches by minimum-wage employees just because airplanes are involved.

Top notch hash is ten bucks a gram. Life ain’t so bad after all.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
