DC may budge on gun laws

The other biased Washington paper notes that a council member has proposed easing some of the most absurd hoops one must jump through to get a gun.

It’s worth noting that it makes little difference since DC’s one retail dealer lost his lease and has yet to re-open.

Anon-Not true. His FFL is still being used for transfers out of the MPD Headquarters. Sykes never sold firearms through retail to individuals; firearms were always purchased in MD and VA and transfered via Syke’s FFL. This was a misconception that he put forth to the media when he lost his lease to drum up attention. City Council tried to use zoning policies as a way to invalidate his FFL and effectively loophole Heller; they got caught, and he was given a special waiver to continue using his FFL out of DC’s Main Police Department’s Headquarters on Indiana Avenue. His FFL was never invalidated. If you are a resident of DC, you can buy a firearm at an MD or VA FFL today and respond to Indiana Ave by COB to start the paperwork process. There are plenty of other things wrong with DCs current Gun Laws, but to say it makes little difference because his retail shop closed is factually incorrect.

Nor does it make a difference when all the other hoops are still there, demanding you jump through each and every one before exercising your constitutional right.

How is Emily doing on her gun in DC? After ONLY 8 WEEKS she has gotten the paperwork started and taken the ~$200 course required to own a pistol in her own home. She had to make a trip out of DC to take the course, of course, since DC doesn’t allow any instructors to even teach the classroom part of the course in DC, despite multiple requests to do so.

I can’t wait to see how the paperwork is handled once it is submitted to the DC gun permit office.

The hoops DC has put up to limit gun ownership by law abiding residents of the city are surprisingly similar to those used by carnivals in their sideshow games. The hoops are designed to stop anyone from winning, but the carny barkers say they are allowing you to play the game.

The only way to win is to not play the game, like criminals who don’t register their guns, or to play another game, like “Sue the City for Damages.”

Congress needs to dissolve the DC government and replace it with an appointed council, and mandate a set of laws/codes that are similar to some nearby Virginia town.

Then bulldoze welfare housing and sell the property, allow gentrification, and encourage people who don’t work there or have an income to leave.

    mikee,

I understand and actively feel your frustration but saying “shall not be infringed” over and over (even though it is true) accomplishes exactly nothing. There are systems (games) and they have to be worked in, especially if you want to use a lawsuit to correct one piece at a time.

Take comfort in the long view. You know as well as I do that what we’ve seen in practice is that in most places that have restrictive CCW, over time the restrictions are removed or modified, often through local action as more people become aware of the ability to carry then get frustrated by the process.

DC has had their policy in place for less than a couple years now and has already been forced to lessen their restrictions several times. That this latest one is even begrudgingly voluntary (no active court order in place) is a good sign. Whether through the courts, Congress or local action the evidence of almost every state is that it will continue to incrementally get better.

Just like AK, AZ and WY eventually got Con Carry and more states are heading that way. We’ll get to what “should be” eventually, until then we should acknowledge and cheer every incremental improvement along the way.

@Jeff Thanks for the updated info. I knew the possibility of Sykes working out of MPD HQ had been floated, but never saw any news item that it had been implemented. Would you happen to have a phone number for him? Or is he contacted through the MPD?

  8. Standard Mischief Says:

    >but never saw any news item that it had been implemented

And wouldn’t that be just like the obfuscating DC government to not release a press statement to our local anti-RKBA media?

Remember, the only reason they have the fscking hoops in place is to keep the law-abiding disarmed.

As for the reason they are considering dropping them, look for an Ass. press story titled “Appeals court upholds DC gun restrictions” The three judge panel didn’t strip any laws, but did require DC to explain why they ban certain rifles with a lot of black plastic, and why they have the ridiculous gun registry.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
