    I recall my dad taking me into a gun store once, and showing me the wooden barrel of M1 carbines, which cost something like $60 or so. I regret deeply that I did not take him up on his offer of one at the time, and that I did not recognize the greasy, grimy surplus rifles for the gems they were.
