Good question: So if the identities of the Mexican criminals were known to the feds, what was the point of Project Gunrunner — and why is Holder so desperately trying to stonewall by withholding hundreds of documents from Congress?

Because this was the administration’s under the table, backdoor effort to get gun control back in the forefront.

Really though; how is this any different from the way other federal .gov programs operate? Take Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac– they caused the housing “crisis” so it could be “fixed”. Same M.O. Take the education establishment– every time they screw up worse than last time, producing worse results, they “need more resources”. Same M.O. The answer to any screw-up is more power and money for those who screwed up.
