You can do that?

Former Blackwater president charged with, according to the press, using straw purchases to stockpile automatic weapons.

  1. Patrick Says:

“Federal law prohibits licensed firearms dealers such as Blackwater from having more than two of the same style of machine gun.”

    Wait, really?

  2. Tam Says:

    Yup, demo letter abuse…

  3. Tam Says:

To expand: A Class 3 SOT (dealer in Title II weapons) can only have post-sample guns for the purpose of using them as sales demonstrators for .gov agencies.

  4. ParatrooperJJ Says:

This doen’t have anything to do with demo letters. The weapons in question were transferred to the Sheriff’s office not to Blackwater. The Sheriff then made an agreement with Blackwater to store the weapons at Blackwater’s facility.

  5. Tam Says:

So they were “the sheriff’s guns”?

A rural NC SD needed 17 buzzguns? Bought with taxpayer dollars? Which they then stored elsewhere?

No wonder BATFEIEIO smelled a rat.

  6. The Packetman Says:

    This doesn’t smell right.

I would think that a company that specializes in military-zone security and ‘other purposes’ would have the juice to obtain full-auto arms legally.

If their rep isn’t as strong as it’s made out to be, it does sound like they tried to get around the NFA.

Not that the NFA doesn’t deserve going around.

That was my first thought, too. I bet there’s some details that we’re not being told (surprise, surprise).

  8. JKB Says:

The company purchased 227 short barrels and installed them on long rifles without registering them, and officials shipped the weapons with the barrels detached so that they could be reassembled overseas without facing the charge of exporting regulated weapons, according to the indictment.

Wait, regardless of their state of assembly, any firearm would require an export license under the US International Traffic In Arms Regulations. The barrels would require an export license if shipped independent of long rifles. Once lawfully exported, the firearms would not be under the jurisdiction of the BATF.

Lord only knows why these contractors would procure their arms in the US given the long time lag for an export license to where they need them.

  9. Spook45 Says:

it is more likely semi auto weapons because autos are tracked so tightly that there is not way a straw purchase could happen unless he stealing identities. NO ONE IN THIER RIGHT MIND who could qualify to buy class III weaps is gonna put themselves out there that way. How Soopid can u get??! BUY MORE AMMO

  10. mariner Says:

The ATFE specifically and the Obama administration generally are a bunch of proven liars. I believe nothing they say without concrete proof, and I note that the ATF has previously been caught manufacturing concrete proof.

  11. Diomed Says:

There’s no formal limit on how many of one kind of post-sample a dealer can have. Limitations are applied as a matter of policy on the part of ATF, not as a matter of law. Besides, there are ways around it.

Either a lot is not being made public, or the guys at Blackwater are/were massive idiots. It’s not hard to get that 07 or 10 FFL and make all the machineguns, SBRs, etc. you want – or to get a 08 or 11 FFL and export them. All that trouble to avoid a few grand a year in licenses and taxes, plus internal paper-shuffling costs? Doesn’t make sense.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
