More on the guns in restaurants bill

Tom Humphrey, mistakenly referring to the bill as the ‘guns in bars’ bill, wonders if Governor Phil Bredesen will sign it. Well, if he wants a future in TN politics, he will. As I said before:

The Governor has been pretty pro-gun. He was endorsed by NRA, signed castle doctrine into law, and signed a law that requires local chief law enforcement officers to approve NFA transfers. So, some pretty good pro-gun credibility. Folks are wondering if he’ll sign the various pro-gun bills working through the legislature now. I’m guessing he will.

I live in Texas, so to relieve my ignorance of Tennessee politics I googled to see if “House Speaker Emeritus” had actually become an official title of State Rep J. Naifeh. Seems in January of this year, a resolution was passed granting him this honorific, such that “as Speaker Emeritus he shall be
entitled to all the benefits and privileges that such honorary title of Speaker Emeritus should carry; provided, however, that such powers shall not extend to any powers or duties granted the Speaker of the House under House Rules or the Constitution of Tennessee.”

In other words, the person who was voted out of office is still honored with a distinctive title, that might make casual readers of newspapers think he was still in charge.

Naifeh is an anti-civil rights bigot, who does not recognize the human right to self defense. He should be referred to as a bigot, as well as by his current or former state title. However, making up a nonexistant official title seems a bit stupid even for a state House.

Eh, I guess things are just as stupid there as anywhere.

If Gov. Bredesen wants to endear himself to the national Democrtaic Party and particularly its leadeship, then he should veto it. A while back he was angling for a postion in the Obama Administration for which being anti-gun rights seems to be a pre-requisite. But then a veto would presumably be an exercise in futility since a simple majority overrides a governor’s veto. I would imagine he’ll let it go without signing or a veto.

    Luckily a veto doesn’t require a 2/3 majority in TN…just a simple majority. 🙂

My bet is that he’ll let it sit unsigned at which point it just automatically becomes law.

It’s good that Naifeh is just one of 99–and on legislation in accordance with our Tennessee Constitution Article I, Section 26 RIGHT to CARRY arms for self-defense, he’s in the minority. He’s been there for a long time, but as Speaker often managed to wield a bigotted, but well targeted group against the right of the people.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
