Guns for life

In Indiana, CCW permits are now for life:

Indiana is the first state in the nation to offer residents lifetime handgun permits under a new law that went into effect this month — a move hailed by Second Amendment supporters and blasted by gun-control advocates.

The law, which also increases the cost of obtaining or renewing a four-year license, went on the books Saturday. The change is expected to bring in more money to the state and the Indiana State Police.

State Police Superintendent Paul Whitesell announced details of House Enrolled Act 1176 at a news conference Wednesday, saying the law will streamline the process to get a permit for law-abiding gun owners. His agency oversees the issuance of permits.

Residents do not need a permit to buy handguns or other firearms but must have one to carry or transport a pistol. State Police officials said Indiana has about 288,000 active handgun permits. Permits are good for four years, but now gun owners have the option of obtaining a lifetime permit instead.

I don’t know if it is still true, but NY permits (issued outside of NYC and LI) were issued for life.

I can remember, in the mid 1990’s, seeing some old-timers (with better pocket-checking-before-laundry-time-than-me habits) still using their original 30+ year old permits.

I’m actually against this, though I’m also against lifetime drivers licences, too.

  3. Jacob Says:

Yes, in New York, licenses issued outside NYC, Long Island and Westchester are good until revoked.

VA permits are supposed to go life next year, too. Do two states make a trend?

I thought it was about “safety”… you know the “moral health and public welfare” BS way the courts decided it was ok to infringe upon the RIGHT to bear arms. Just what the hell is a “handgun permit” if not an infringement???

Nope. In truth we find it is about the money. And gun owners, (the NRA), are screaming for the ability to line up and pay a tax to get the life-long priviledge to exercise a right that was never to be infringed upon. Life-long, I guess that just about seals it for those of us who never want to be considered priviledged.

And it is strange what we willingly, not only accept, but beg to have thrown from the table so we can tear each other apart fighting over it.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
