The Mrs. made a DVD of home videos of the baby (we got one of those DVD recorders for the TeeVee). She wants to give copies to family and friends. How can I make copies of a DVD? I have a DVD recorder on the laptop.

Otherwise, our recording options are to copy the DVD to VCR then use the VCR tape to make copies of the video (each time would take 4 hours).

You should be able to do a DVD to DVD copy on your laptop using Nero. You should be able to create an image from the source DVD on your hard drive and then burn it to a blank.

So, I need to create an image from the DVD then put it on a blank. Gotcha. Now, I assume Nero does that?

Should do it fine. And if you’re making multiple copies of the same DVD, there should be an option to tell Nero you want to do so. Look for a check box or such labeled “Make multiple copies” (something along those lines). Saves the time spent creating the image again for more copies. If you have the HD space, you can also save the Nero image (baby.nri) and use it later.

I don’t know if Nero can do it, but if you are going to create a disk image (which I strongly recommend), try to force it to save it in .iso format. This is more widely recognized and if the shtf, you can use other programs to make a CD from it.

(I would have responded to your request for where to click in Nero, but ran out of time. For future reference though, be sure to include the version of Nero you are using. 5, 6, & 7 all have different locations and names for things. -Although you couldn’t have been using 5, as it doesn’t have DVD support….duh. :)- )

Open Nero, go to Options. Bring up your file manager and create a folder called Cd-Cache ( or something similar ). In Options, set the temporary cache to that directory. Start the copy process and tell it how many copies you want to make. Nero will prompt you for each blank cd.

optionally, there’s a snazzy dvd burning program for linux called k3b, which is free, in case you ain’t got nero.

You really don’t even need to do a clone copy. You can just copy the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS files off the original disk onto your laptop, and burn those onto the blanks and it will work.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
