Jumpin’ Jesus On A Pogo Stick!

Pat Gang alerts me to the Leitner-Wise LW15.499. It is a 50 caliber, semi-automatic rifle based on the AR15. I’m guessing by the .499 designation, it was made for sale in California. Heh!

Order one today for about $1,500.

Pardon me while I wipe the drool from my keyboard.

That’s pretty amazing. Under 7 lbs, to boot.

I have a question though: what in god’s name would you ever need a rifle like that for?

Need? What’s need got to do with it?

Ah crap. I realized too late that brass is an alloy of copper and (something, I believe zinc). Sorry for the double post, and the obligatory “GOD I’m A BIG DORK” apology post.

In the interests of making this at least a bit interesting, I bring you SPOOOOOOON! Ahem.

Honestly, I’m not sure what niche this fills. If it can give you the velocity usually associated with .50 BMG rifles, then it is an excellent anti-material rifle. That makes it a true militia weapon, useful for things like killing cop cars, shattering bullet-proof glass, shooting things behind cover, etc.

It claimes 300 grain bullets with a 2100 fps velocity at the muzzle. That’s about M82 energy (665 grains at 900 fps). Even though it seems to drop off velocity a lot faster than an M82, it is enough to ruin pretty much anyone’s day if they are on the wrong end of this thing at MOUT ranges.
