I stopped by the sporting goods dept. at Wally World last night to pick up ammo. Their shelves were about half empty. No 100 round WWW packs of .40 or .45.

Rolling your own is a good way to both keep costs down and ensure your supply is better.

For example, it’s $33 for a box of 50 10mm, and that’s the cheap, factory reloads. That amounts to 66 cents a round.

Now, since I already have the brass handy, I can get bullets for 17 cents each, plus 2 cents for a primer and less than 2 cents for powder, making my cost per round right at 21 cents.

For .45ACP, I can use cast lead bullets which are $60 for 1000, so 6 cents for each bullet and 4 cents for the other stuff gets me 10 cents a round – $5 for 50.

I probably should load up by the crate for powder and primers the way things are going these days.

Addendum – Looking at Midway, seems like even a lot of bulk bullets are out of stock.

I’d like to try reloading, more for the experience than the economics, but with two toddlers and an elderly mother to take care of my interrupted free time is pretty minimal. Reloading seems like one of those hobbies that shouldn’t be done half-assedly. 🙂

  5. Robb Allen Says:

Les, absolutely not, but I too have two little ones (6 and 3, so not exactly toddlers) and manage to find some time.

However, you simply cannot do it while distracted at all. You have to pay attention or you may, like I have before, skip a step.

Did you know a CCI 300 large primer alone, sans powder, will shove a 10mm bullet about an inch and a half down the barrel?

  6. Joe Huffman Says:

Robb, you can get 10mm FMJ bullets for $0.11 each ($0.12 for .45 FMJ bullets). Or if you want to go with silver (really!) bullets for your .45 you can get them for $0.11 each.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
