“Your gun sucks and you’re holding it wrong”

It’s the running gag on the internet that gun discussions usually start or end saying something like that. Some folks got their dander up when I said avoid XDs. I went googling for PDBs blog post on why the XD was not a very good pistol to discover his site is completely gone. But I found a version of parts of it over at Bearing Arms. There are legitimate concerns about the XD. It’s wasn’t meant to be flippant or casual. That was written in 2012. Maybe they’ve changed.

Herschel, who may actually be holding it wrong*, says he’d rather have an XD or a 1911. The 1911 is right out due to capacity. He says he can hit an XD with a hammer and it will work fine. It’s a good thing. Because he might have to.

NJT doesn’t appreciate me bashing his gun. Or his car.

* I kid. But he’s got better eyes than I do if he can tell from a picture the difference in bore axis on a Sig compared to the XD.

I love a good gun fight. It makes me feel all warm inside.

  2. SayUncle Says:

    It’s not a fight. We’re discussing.

  3. Herschel Smith Says:

It was a pun. A play on words.

Four or five years ago, I bought my wife an XD 4″ in .40 cal. Over that time we’ve probably put six or seven hundred rounds through it with none of the problems described in PDB’s blog. The recoil is ok,accuracy is good enough and we don’t intend to shoot competition with it.

The little woman was putting rounds in a 4 inch bull at 20 yards by her third magazine. She LIKES the XD, a lot.

For a pistol that is intended for castle defense and selected because of price, it is good value.

If I were to go to war, I’d rather take a rifle.

Oh I didn’t mind you bashing it. An XD is what it is. An El Camino trying to do a pickup truck job in a F150 world.

  6. Pete Says:

    They make hi-cap 1911s. In .45 ACP.

  7. SPQR Says:

What I found frustrating is I saw some similar comments about the XD somewhere else after seeing PDB’s blog but could never backtrack where. Always wondered if the XDm addressed issues.

  8. Nolan Says:

I have 2 xd’s, both bought in 2013 or later, and just tried to recreate the lockup problem shown in those videos. It seems like they’ve fixed that issue, as I cannot recreate it at home.

  9. Bruce Says:

I have an XDm 5.25 that I won at a local shooting match. You can’t rack the slide without depressing the grip safety. I tried the same trick at the counter with an XDs and could not recreate the problem. I’m glad they’ve addressed it.

I’ve always shot old school DA/SA pistols and that’s what I still shoot. Eh, the best part about being a civilian is getting to choose your own gun instead of letting the accountants do it for you. The Sig isn’t a bad choice and they make it here. It’s a perfectly good choice.

  10. Mike Says:

I have an XD 9mm Tactical with about 8K rounds through it. I had to replace the springs on some of the magazines, and clean it every 1K rounds or thereabouts. My only real concern about it is that it would be extremely challenging to clear a malfunction one-handed.

  11. Dustin Says:

Bruce, they fixed that problem for the XDs and then put the problem back in for the Mod 2. I will say, my wife’s mod 2 hasn’t had the problem with the striker retaining pin backing out like my old XD had.

  12. PaperworkNinja Says:

It’s gone over 10,000 rounds for me in 10 years. It’s reliable enough for what I want it to do.

  13. dustydog Says:

If you pistol needs a decocker, it is poorly designed and you should fee bad.

  14. JTC Says:

In the last 6-8 years I was an FFL, roughly ’09-’15 the various XD iterations was the number one LNIB trade-in, meaning they were being swapped off while still quite new. Make of that what you will.

  15. Laughingdog Says:

If grip angle affects your ability to shoot accurately, you’re doing it wrong. Complaining about grip angle usually means you have no idea how to use your sights.

As for XDs, I’ve seen far too many get sent back with a failed grip safety and a round in the chamber to ever trust one.

  16. JTC Says:

No matter how much your gun does or does not suck, and especially for all y’all who say not to run away but rather run toward the danger (including, sadly Mas A. as I learned from my comments to and from him during his Zimmerman series), don’t do it.

  17. SPQR Says:

JTC, haven’t seen a coherent story yet regarding the robbery, so its not clear whether or which victims were already in store or “ran toward danger”. Wish we had a good account.

  18. JTC Says:

SPQR, first saw this yesterday in a trade publication:

    http://www.jckonline.com/2017/01/23/two-killed-jewelry-store-robberies-over-weekend

If accurate, a failed and very ill-advised, Good Samaritan intervention.

Note the other referenced fatality involved a Jared security guard accidentally killing a store employee.

If you are not directly defending innocent life, get the fuck away from the fray.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
