Traveler’s insurance makes the Courant

Travelers (non) Explains Gun (non) Policy:

Travelers declined to comment about the specific case mentioned in the blogs because the company keeps private its dealings with customers. The New York-based property-casualty insurer that employs thousands in Connecticut does insure guns from theft. But the company would not say if owning certain types of rifles and handguns is a risk that Travelers considers uninsurable.

“Every individual is evaluated on the particular risks,” said Travelers spokesman Matt Bordonaro.

In general, owning guns doesn’t prevent a person from buying homeowner’s insurance. Theft of rifles or pistols is covered by a homeowner’s policy.

“A standard homeowner’s policy typically covers theft of guns up to certain limits, and there are additional endorsements that can be added for collectors looking to insure pieces over a certain value,” said Bordonaro, The Travelers spokesman.

No reason mentioned why there were two instances of folks being dropped or refused. Not much of an explanation, if you ask me.

I had the same experience with Travelers. When I tried to get an additional rider policy in excess of the basic coverage of $2,500 for guns I was told that they would not insure “assault weapons”. I went round and round with them over the true meaning of that definition. In the end, I dropped all my coverage (house & 2 cars) and moved it to a gun friendly company.

Not going to deal with them and will advise all my clients to terminate relations with them as well.

I’ll endorse State Farm or at least my agent.

I bought my first house a bit over a year ago and homeowners came up. I kind of danced around the guns, but he came right out and said, “This is Kentucky, we expect you to have guns.” and went on to explain the minimums and so on. He then showed me what personal property rates were like for my guns and my wifes musical instruments if I wanted explicit or extra coverage.

    Basically a non-denial denial.

That article over at the Courant appears to be a work in progress.

The title changed, and the text of the article has changed pretty dramatically as well.

No mentions of updates, and the original time stamp is still there.

    Slippery, slippery stuff.

  6. MJM Says:

Sounds like a gun-banning, gun-hating, big-government, Big-Brother loving underwriter taking what he things is a righteous stand. The agent should be raising all kinds of cane on the insured’s behalf.

  7. N.U.G.U.N. Blog Says:

I don’t own any ‘assault weapons’, just ‘defense weapons’.

So I don’t have a problem with my Traveler’s Insurance rider. LOL

  8. Bob H Says:

The author of the article at the Courant has noted in the comments that the story has been updated, but the timestamping does not appear to have changed. Author also notes that this story is a work in progress and a longer story will be out possibly tomorrow.

In general, owning guns doesn’t prevent a person from buying homeowner’s insurance, but specifically, it does.
This is just the tip of the anti-gun rights iceberg at Traveler’s. They are obviously so hateful towards gun owners that they won’t back down from their “assault weapon” ban, even after it’s been publicly exposed.
There is absolutely no additional risk of one type of gun being lost or stolen over another, among guns of equal value. They’ll insure a $20,000 shotgun, but not a $700 AR? It’s pure anti-gun rights activism on their part. Traveler’s “Red” umbrella may be a magnet for leftists, but I want no part of advancing their anti-freedom agenda.
I wonder who got to them? Brady Campaign?

Until something gets stolen and you try to collect that is…….
