Fort Hood Shooter Second Officer – Redux

Mentioned earlier that there was another officer involved in the shooting that took down the killer.

Seems Munley got credit because someone’s racist. Some don’t like to credit black folks.

How sexist.

Retro

DC Circuit Court says the Heller decision is retroactive.

I’m pretty sure that was the intent

Seen at SIH on the one gun a month bill:

“As it stands now, retailers would be prohibited from purchasing guns from their suppliers,” said Burlington County Prosecutor Robert Bernardi, who leads the task force. “I think that was an oversight when the legislation was passed.”

The law exempts sales between licensed gun dealers, but not purchases from distributors or manufacturers, which are classified differently under New Jersey law.

And NJ politicos are now saying they weren’t aware of that. Even though they were told that. Didn’t read the bill or lying because they saw what happened to Corzine?

Fort Hood and the second officer

Another officer credited for ending the shooting. That seems consistent with the account I linked earlier. Though that account was unconfirmed, several military folks I know vouched for it.

ETA: And this is not to question Officer Munley who acted bravely. Rather, to give credit to another heroic officer.

Americans with Disabilities

Paralyzed man in NJ, who liked to hunt, was denied his firearms ID and approval from the local chief of police. He sued and the court said to give him the card. Also, there’s this:

Under New Jersey law, a police chief may not give a firearms ID card to anyone with a physical defect or disease that makes it unsafe for the person to handle guns. The chief may also deny an application if approving it “would not be in the interest of public health, safety or welfare.”

Isn’t that rather arbitrary and discriminatory?

FN FiveseveN

Since that’s the latest anti-gun and media (but I repeat myself) whipping boy, some stuff on the FN FiveseveN:

The FiveseveN fact or fiction. Shows some ballistics comparisons and tells us what we already knew: it’s a bit more powerful than a .22 magnum.

A look at the weapon from GunBlast.

Some videos about the gun.

A couple of other reviews on the weapon here and here.

Seems their prices have gone up.

Rule four

Be sure of your target and what’s behind it.

Banning guns based on color

A law doing that in NY has been put on hold pending a lawsuit.

Arms Trade Treaty

Reuters:

The United States reversed policy on Wednesday and said it would back launching talks on a treaty to regulate arms sales as long as the talks operated by consensus, a stance critics said gave every nation a veto.

The decision, announced in a statement released by the U.S. State Department, overturns the position of former President George W. Bush’s administration, which had opposed such a treaty on the grounds that national controls were better.

Update: I somehow missed the first pass, but turns out the story is a month old and covered by David.

A government that is big enough to absolutely, positively guarantee it can screw any business. Overnight.

UPS is union and, naturally, pays almost twice what FedEx does in wages and benefits. This puts them at a competitive disadvantage. So, they sue of course.

For this reason and the reason in this blog post, I will do my shipping with FedEx.

You’re not law enforcement

Good:

An angry aide to Rep. Ron Paul, an iPhone and $4,700 in cash have forced the Transportation Security Administration to quietly issue two new rules telling its airport screeners they can only conduct searches related to airplane safety.

In response, the American Civil Liberties Union is dropping its lawsuit on behalf of Steve Bierfeldt, the man who was detained in March and who recorded the confrontation on his iPhone as TSA and local police officers spent half an hour demanding answers as to why he was carrying the money through Lambert-St. Louis International Airport.

The new rules, issuedin September and October, tell officers “screening may not be conducted to detect evidence of crimes unrelated to transportation security” and that large amounts of cash don’t qualify as suspicious for purposes of safety.

Facebook Funnies

My kids are into The Super Hero Squad. It’s entertaining. Yesterday’s episode featured a scene in which we discovered that all the super villains were planning their world domination on a social networking website called Maskbook, which looked just like Facebook. Funny.

There can be only one . . .

. . . good movie called Highlander. Everything else about it has sucked. All sequels sucked. TeeVee show sucked. Etc. And I’m guessing its purported reimagining will too:

Swords are so last century. These new immortals use firearms as well as swords. At one point MacLeod attempts to take out his arch nemesis the Kurgan with a sniper rifle. Ramirez, as well, advises MacLeod to always learn the ways of the boom boom makers.

My bet is this thing is going to suck.

Update: Because I’ve not said suck enough, Matt in comments nails it:

y’know, I watched the original movie again a couple years ago, and the thing that struck me was this: The only good thing about that movie was the overall storyline. The acting sucked, the writing sucked, the special effects sucked, and the fight choreography sucked.

It’s a tribute to the story that I still remember the movie fondly. But it wouldn’t be hard to improve on, as long as they keep the story.

Indeed. Don’t monkey with the story.

Veterans Day

Thanks to all the vets out there. And for you folks who aren’t bets, take a vet to lunch.

Most Popular Guns

Via DAMIT, comes How Stuff Works Top 5 Most Popular Guns – and Why. The guns are:

1. Thompson/Center Arms Muzzle Loader
2. Remington 870 Pump-Action
3. Bushmaster AR-15
4. Smith & Wesson Model 10
5. Colt M1911

I wonder how they determined most popular? I imagine that the Glock is more popular than the Thompson or Bushy.

Clinging to their religion and guns

Shitcom

ShitMyDadSays (the only good thing I’ve ever seen from twitter) will be the basis for a TeeVee show. And it will suck, like most adaptations of things made for TeeVee.

Be a good little subject

Or an enemy of the people:

It’s official. The Joint Tax Committee informs us that under the terms of the Pelosi health-care bill, “Americans who do not maintain acceptable health insurance coverage and who choose not to pay the bill’s new individual mandate tax (generally 2.5% of income), are subject to numerous civil and criminal penalties, including criminal fines of up to $250,000 and imprisonment of up to five years.”

ciao

I’m not a big fan of the death penalty for the reason Tam says and, also, because it’s application tends to disfavor certain socioeconomic classes. But I did tip up a glass of Buffalo Trace last night to celebrate the DC sniper’s exit from this world.

Fort Hood Shooting Stuff -The Blame Game

Blame the weapon.

Blame the gun culture

Blame guns in general

Blame Clinton:

A Clinton Administration revision to Department of Defense Directive 5210.56 — Army Regulation 190-14, dated 12 March 1993 — permits the Secretary of the Army to authorize military personnel to carry firearms “on a case by case basis” for personal protection within the continental United States, but forbids military personnel to carry their own personal firearms and both requires “a credible and specific threat” before firearms be issued for military personnel to protect themselves. It further directs that firearms “not be issued indiscriminately for that purpose.”

Thus did President Bill Clinton — Commander-in-Chief of the United States Army — apply to American military personnel under his command the same anti-gun policies his administration and a Democratic-controlled Congress applied to American civilians in the Brady Bill and Assault Weapons ban of 1994.

Editorials calling to end that here and here.

Of course, no one but blogs are talking about the shooter’s terrorists connections or the fact he was being watched by various fed.gov agencies for posting his jihad fantasies on the internet.

And what is with little jihadis and strip clubs?
