Bloomberg comes to town – updated

I called the Mayor’s office this morning to ask about Mayor Bill Haslam’s involvement in Michael Bloomberg’s Alliance of Mayors Against Guns. The nice lady I talked to had no idea what I was talking about. She transferred me to another nice lady who had no idea what I was talking about. I was then transferred to a communications person and was lost in the telephone hold system.

Sounds like the kind of response I got when I called Boston and asked why Mayor Menino wasn’t ordering the Boston PD to enforce gun laws on the books before getting up and making false claims about the status of the law. (I don’t agree with the law on the books, I just think Menino should be held accountable when he lies about gun laws.)

    Uncle,

Let me know if you ever get any answers and we’ll have you on the show to talk about your experience.

Has Bill Haslam lost his mind? Please help me understand the mission statement of Mayors Against Illegal Guns. Is this a coded politic-speak for criminals cannot steal a gun from your home if you do not have a gun? Do I detect a very slippery slope?

We respect the rights of law abiding citizens to own guns, and we recognize that the vast majority of gun dealers carefully follow the law. Our only interest is in fighting crime — and we are determined to win. The polarizing rhetoric of gun politics on all sides only obscures the tragic reality we see every day on our streets: violent criminals with easy access to firearms.

We are extremely pleased that over 100 mayors from more than 40 states have joined the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition, and we welcome other mayors to stand with us. Over the coming months, we will continue to work with our fellow mayors to share best practices, develop innovative policies, and support legislation at the national, state, and local levels that will help law enforcement target illegal guns.

We have all signed a statement of principles committing us to this fight. While we will each have different strategies for pursuing those principles, we all agree on the goal: making the public safer by getting illegal guns off our streets.

Uncle–Steve Gill interviewed Mayor Haslam today about the information you brought to light on this very issue. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to hear all the interview–just parts here and there. I wanted to call you and give you a heads up…but heck, I don’t know your name and I don’t have a computer at work. (That’s changing soon.)

Any how, it was quite a long interview. You might want to see if you can get your hands on it for your site. I’m impressed that Gill called and asked him to explain over the airwaves. Gill is now on 850 AM in Knoxville 9-12.

    Terry,

Thanks. I saw the link from Gill but have yet to find a transcript.

BTW, what did he say? I’ve not heard a peep.

  7. SayUncle » Bloomberg comes to town - updated again Says:

[…] Mayor Haslam was apparently on Steve Gill’s show and was asked about his membership in an anti-gun group (see here and here). I haven’t heard it. AC says: My main man, Steve Gill, and I just conversated and he relays that Haslam’s people called into his show today and were emphatic that the Mayor was only looking to enforce existing laws and combating illegal guns. He has no interest in making anymore laws or grabbing anyone’s pistola. […]

  8. SayUncle » Nothing but Internet - Again Says:

[…] The NRA has picked up my story about Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam being a member of the anti-gun Mayors Alliance that is funded by Joyce Foundation (See here, here, here, here and here). Wayne LaPierre (yes, that Wayne LaPierre) asks What’s going on in Knoxville: Here’s a suggestion for Mayor Haslam and the citizens of Knoxville. […]

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
