ATF Clarifies SBR Engraving

I reported before that the ATF ruled that SBRs that you make out of existing weapons do not need to be engraved. The ATF has now backtracked err clarified that you, in fact, are required to do so. Here’s the letter.

Its funny that he blacked out his personal information on the letter. I understand not posting it on the web, but the guy the letter was written to ought to understand that the letter is now a legal/public document and will likely be available over the internet to anyone searching for information on the subject.

What is wrong with them folks? Don’t they realize that sending out conflicting letters make them look like they don’t know their ass from a hole in the ground?

Here’s the law referenced in the letter:

The people on that thread aren’t reading closely enough.

The ATF letter says that the previous letter’s statement about not requiring other marks on the receiver is correct, and then says you do have to mark it with the maker, city, and state.

That’s a contradiction only if you forget that a maker’s mark can be on a frame or barrel rather than having to be on the receiver.

So both the statements “you must add markings for maker, city, and state” and “you do not have to add markings to the receiver” are correct, at the same time, and in the same context. You do have to mark that information on the gun, but it doesn’t have to be on the receiver.

  7. SayUncle Says:

Sig, not sure about that. The receiver is the actual gun and the gun is what would have to be marked, IMO.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
