This needs to happen

Sen. Steve Daines has introduced a bill to expand travel protections offered by the Firearm Owners Protection Act:

The bill would reform the Firearm Owners Protection Act (FOPA), clarifying the term transport to include staying in temporary lodging overnight, stopping for food, fuel, vehicle maintenance, an emergency, medical treatment, and any other activity incidental.

Daines said Americans should not be afraid to transport their legally owned firearms.

Yeah, I wouldn’t stop for gas in New Jersey. Just sayin’.

Pretty sure NJ doesn’t allow self service gas pumps, so you would have an attendant eyeballing you and your vehicle up close and personal.

  2. RandyGC Says:

I’d expand that to not traveling through NJ at all.

I last lived/traveled on the East Coast 20+ years ago and I didn’t forget anything worth going back for.

They need to make violation by state and local officials into federal crimes.

This issue can impact even the most well laid plans. If you are flying up to New Hampshire to go hunting and someone on your flight has a medical emergency so they divert to New York or New Jersey, you could wind up being an instant felon of your flight gets delayed overnight.

When you go to check back in and declare your firearm, they arrest you on the spot.

I can confirm that you aren’t allowed to pump your own gas in New Jersey.

I was out there several months ago and stopped into a WaWa’s because I needed gas and had heard they had great sammiches. Can confirm the sammiches are pretty good, not sure about great, however. Anyway, pulled up to the gas pump and started to run the pump when a little chubby gal (not that there’s anything wrong with that) comes running up yelling no-no-no we pump the gas for you in New Joisy.

I kinda gave her a blank look and she said she saw the out of state car tag so you don’t know why you can’t pump your own gas here, do you?

    Um, no, why not?

She said, and I quote, it’s because people from New Joisy are too f–king stupid to pump their own gas.

Well, I said, I’m in no position to challenge your expertise so please go right ahead.

    True story.

  6. Liston Matthews Says:

If you have an emergency landing in NJ, better to drive to Philly and book a new flight–

Otherwise, if you try to check your firearm, you may have an extended stay at their greybar hotel.

    Once again, political theater.
There was a two-year window from 2017 to 2019 when this bill, nationwide reciprocity, and probably the Hearing Protection Act, would have been easily passed by both Houses and signed by the President. The Republicans never brought any of them to a vote. Now with a Democratic House and zero chance of any of these bills passing, they introduce them to show you how they’re bravely fighting for your rights. They’re all liars and whores.

  8. Melvinr Says:

Liston, wasn’t the original purpose of the FOPA to prevent NY, NJ, MA, et al from doing exactly this?

Yet every time reform is mentioned, it seems these states get carve-outs to let them keep doing it…

And let’s not even talk about the Hughes Amendment that Charlie Rangle got added.

  9. Robert Says:

“When you go to check back in and declare your firearm, they arrest you on the spot.”

That’s why you don’t pick it up when you land in the first place. Fly on to your destination and then report that they lost your firearm in transit. They’ll fall over themselves finding it and getting it to you.

  10. Old NFO Says:

And DEFINITELY do not stop/fly into NY with a gun… Or Boston… You’ll lose it AND go to jail, especially if it’s a nice gun.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
