Dance with who brung ya

In, what I thought was a risky move, the NRA endorsed Trump. Now, it appears, some are worried he’s working to pay them back:

President Trump promised the NRA he would never let it downand he and Republican lawmakers have been quietly going about the work of living up to that pledge.

In May 2016, the National Rifle Association gave Donald Trump an early, and critical, vote of confidence by endorsing his presidential bid while other conservative groups were still plotting to overthrow him. The NRA stood by Trump throughout the tumultuous campaign and spent $30 million to help get him elected. In turn, Trump vowed to the gun lobbys members that he would never let them down. Remember that, he said.

The article goes on to mention reciprocity and the hearing protection act.

About time a Republican doesn’t promptly forget gun owners as soon as they are sworn in.

  3. wizardpc Says:

But if the bills pass, how will the GOP fundraise off the issue? 😉

  4. rickn8or Says:

wizardpc, more to the point, how will the NRA fundraise of the issue?

  5. Fred Says:

exactly. If 2A is the law, what do we need the NRA for? How will they fund their 401k’s and put their kids through law school?

  6. Blue Falcon Says:

You forget the NRA makes a ton of money off safety and training courses. They started out as a training organization and would keep doing that.

“They started out as a training organization and would keep doing that.”

Yes; at a small fraction of current revenue, but that would be a good day. We need far more range development for one thing, and I’m sick of getting calls asking if I’m aware of the latest attack by criminal politicians against the second amendment. NRA’s primary M.O. Has been to pump up emotions against those dirty rotten anti gun forces, thus loosening our wallets.

So what exactly is “support” for the NRA anymore? Seems to me the Democrats and RINOs have been their best “support” over the years. Obama was gun salesman of the decade. Before that it was Clinton. Does the NRA fear a time when that kind of “support” is gone for good?

Put the criminals in prison or string them up, free the political prisoners, move on with life in a free country.

That’s a law enforcement/justice system problem, not a matter for paid lobbyists, legislative committees or other advocacy groups. The constitution promises us that we won’t have to fight these fights; the Supreme Law of the Land makes it a criminal or otherwise impeachable offense to attack human rights under color of law.

What the fuck are we doing treating it as a political issue? To do so is to forget the Supreme Law, or to pretend that it doesn’t exist, and if we pretend it doesn’t exist then for all practical purposes it doesn’t exist. So, who are the enemies of the constitution? Look in the mirror.

Because there is no other way to fight the encroachment, unless you are ready to start shooting cops, and I don’t think that is the way to go.

  9. nk Says:

You guys have become spoiled, I think. Living in states with real RKBA. You gotta experience Illinois and New Jersey and Maryland and Massachusetts to appreciate how little the courts’ interpretations of the Second Amendment have done for you.

What you enjoy in places like Tennessee and Texas and Missouri and Ohio and Florida and _____ has come through legislative action. And that legislative action was due mainly to the efforts of the NRA. And what the legislatures give, they can also take away while there are still anti-gun lobbyists. So you better want a future for the NRA in the political arena.

Because we’ll launch directly into applying the simplistic, negative stereotypes that have been fed to us, rather than trying to understand that there might be something else there. We’ll read things that weren’t written or even implied, rather than face the often hard truths.

The NRA never stopped or even reduced its spending on training and range improvement grants. The political stuff is “in addition to”, not “instead of”. You’re dues don’t go to the political stuff, that’s why they have to beg you for money for that. The NRA-ILA is a parallel organization to do the lobbying and political donations, etc., and it can’t use funds from the NRA.

  12. comatus Says:

They did just, in effect, sell off the National Matches.
    So, there’s that.

  13. Patrick Says:

The acts before Congress are nothing but shows bills set up as stage props to demonstrate why you need to give more money so we can override filibusters in 2018. But only if they get more money to elect more critters.

And then in 2018 it’ll be something else.

Face it, we’ve always been more useful to the gop when our rights are denied. Anger sells.

And does anyone really think the gop establishment is actually comfortable with armed citizens? Please…

  14. JTC Says:

So, Trump’s payback to NRA for its support is his support of it and its causes.

What do you suppose the next leftist gov’s payback to NRA will be for its support of Trump?

The NRA’s role going forward (and the role of all supporters of 2A) will be to not be complacent so we don’t have to find out. That will take work and money.

All politics is ephemeral. And payback’s a bitch.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
