Well, one is opening a firing range.

Good for them. I may donate to them.

I can feel the College Democrats hyperventilating already. Of course, there may be no College Democrat Chapter at Liberty.

  2. Erik Says:

University of Tennessee has one under Stokely. ROTC use to use it.

  3. Davidwhitewolf Says:

Not the first; UC Davis’ Martin Luther King Jr School of Law (“King Hall”) had a ROTC indoor pistol range steps from the law school”s back door by the bike racks when I attended, 1993-1996. My roomie beat the ROTC top dude in the annual (paper) turkey shoot. They dismantled it as part of the recent remodel, I guess, ’cause it ain’t there no more.

Don’t know if it was NRA approved, but Rice University used to have a range in the basement of the gym, at least for pistol. Believe it went away a decade or so ago during a renovation, probably a victim of political correctness but as a general rule basements are not a great idea down here in the swampland.

  5. Peter O Says:

Ohio State has one in the ROTC basement that is occasionally open to the public. Also still used by the ROTC programs and the championship winning Olympic pistol and rifle collegiate teams.

D.C. built a bunch of high schools in the ’30s, compliments of fed money, and most had 50 ft smallbore ranges in the basement that were used by participants in the Army Cadet Corp program, using DCM-provided rifles and ammo (the Director of Civilian Marksmanship program was the precursor to CMP). Up to about ’70 the Cadets Corps in the high schools competed in riflery against each other, just like in the Real Sports (football, baseball, etc.). AFAIK, the ranges are still there, being used for storage, and with some updates to ventilation and lighting could be put back into service.

  7. DSK Says:

MIT has had a pistol and a rifle range for years.

Looks like the headline article is clickbait. The article details are more accurate, although the weasel words essentially make the point of the headline moot. The author went to Liberty and doesn’t disclose that anywhere, which raises a few questions.

  8. Lyle Says:

There have been on-campus firing ranges for as long as there have been campuses. And high schools for that matter.

The University of Idaho has had a firing range on campus for generations.

Before the advent of the firearm, no doubt there were schools which had archery ranges.

And this, really, is the point. I have no doubt that the author of the title claiming “Nation’s First” is perfectly aware that other campus shooting ranges have existed continuously since before our great grandparents were born. Certainly these leftist agitators posing as journalists could educate themselves on the matter within seconds, and so it proves they are being intentionally deceptive. Like all political hacks, they’re hoping for enough of the young and the ignorant to fall for it, thus keeping the hacks relevant in a world that would otherwise ignore them.

  9. Old Windways Says:

@DSK The MIT pistol and rifle ranges are alive and well (if not openly discussed by the administration).

My local smallbore pistol league includes a team based out of the MIT range http://techprc.org/ (mostly faculty and alumni with the occasional grad student, the undergrads compete at the collegiate level). I actually shot a bullseye match there 2 weeks ago in the basement of the duPont building (formerly a Massachusetts State Armory). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campus_of_the_Massachusetts_Institute_of_Technology#DuPont_Athletic_Center_and_Gymnasium_.281959.29

It was probably 15 years ago or more but I taught a NRA Personal Protection class at the University of Idaho range. We weren’t allowed to shoot there (.22 only IIRC) but we did classroom and gun handling there and then went to an outdoor range a few miles away the next day for the shooting portion.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
