Media discovers .380 pocket pistols

A year after most people already stopped getting them. FoxNews:

The .380 semi-automatic handgun has become all the rage in firearms, as more states relax conceal-carry restrictions and men and women alike turn to a palm-sized gun that easily fits into a handbag, pocket or ankle holster. Production of the super-small handgun is at a 16-year high, with nearly 900,000 made in the U.S. in 2014, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

I had one for two years and sold it already.

  2. Deaf Smith Says:

Now the super small pocket 9mms are the rage. Duh…

  3. Ron W Says:

    I suppose a .380 may be OK for ” don’t ask, don’t tell” carry. Personally I want a minimum of a 9.

  4. DaveP. Says:

Compared to 9mm, .380 just isn’t a good platform for a good, reliably-expanding hollow point… and there’s a LOT of 9mm’s that are only a fraction bigger than all but the smallest .380s. I love my SIG 230, but both my Kahr K9 and my Glock 26 are as small or smaller and the Glock carries more rounds…

  5. Crunkomatic Says:

99.99% of the time, it doesn’t matter what caliber. You shoot your gun at your assailant, and he’s going to run for his life.

  6. Ron W Says:

Crunkomatic, that’s true and no gun is far far better than no gun.

  7. Ron W Says:

Correction to #6: a gun is better than no gun.

  8. mike w. Says:

And here I am bucking the trend and carrying a .25ACP Jetfire….

  9. Billll Says:

Back in the ’80s, Dianne Feinstein “invented” the compact 9mm by carrying legislation to ban guns with magazines larger than 10 rounds. Or was it 8, I don’t remember. Gunmakers scaled down the grips to the shorter mags, then scaled down the upper for aesthetic reasons, and Voila! the “pocket rocket” easily concealable 9mm pistol. The .380 is for people who have a problem with the rather snappy felt recoil of the small, light frame. I suppose that as the boomers get older and arthritis becomes the disease du jour, the .380 will become more popular.

IIRC, the Jetfire requires a takeout coffee* to pre-heat your attacker.

*(I’m unsure if a particular brand or blend is mandated)

  11. NotClauswitz Says:

I wish someone would build a small-gun frame for people with big hands, and then find a caliber for it. Shot a Shield 9mm and it’s wiggly more than painful but I could probably shoot my thumbs-off if I stick them out there.

  12. tincankilla Says:

@notclauswitz i’d look at any browning design. i like the 1903 hammerless, myself. maybe the springfield EMP?

  13. Deaf Smith Says:

Crunkomatic, show me the stats where 99 percent of them run away. I just doubt 99 percent of those shot at run away.

  14. hist_ed Says:

Odd how the article keep talking about “the .380” as if there’s only one. “Today, the gun is generally well-made” etc.
Also, “Saturday Night Special” doesn’t mean a single caliber, right?

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
