Guns in movies

Massad Ayoob lists some boo boos he’s seen on TV and in movies. I like how Rambo shot the rocket launcher from inside a helicopter and, you know, didn’t die. And one that happens in too many movies to count is during, or right after, a massive shoot out, someone looks at someone else and says “shhh, did you hear that?” Yes, because after all those explosions going off near your head, you can hear that creak.

I happened accross a Nicholas Cage movie last night, “Drive Angry”, in which one of the bad guys fans nine or ten shots from his old-fashioned, Model P style single action revolver – several times. There is the Ruger Single Ten I suppose, but I think we were meant to believe it was a big bore.

  2. Professor X Says:

How often do you see a show or movie that involves gunfights in which no one racks a slide for dramatic effect?

  3. Ron W Says:

How often do we see movies with “gun violence” made by those who blame the real life version on those who only want to keep and carry the means to defend themselves against it?

  4. Huck Says:

The thing I’ve noticed most is rarely do we see anyone reloading after all that bang-bang. They just holster the pistol. (after firing six times the weaps capacity)

  5. Bram Says:

Professor X – I seem to hear the racking sound every time somebody pulls a gun, even though they aren’t actually working the slide. Do Hollywood Directors think that a safety makes that sound? Or that people need to cock a DA or striker fired semi-auto?

  6. Weer'd Beard Says:

Battle-rattle, where the gun makes some clicking sound that doesn’t seem to have an origin.

Also 1911s and Hi-Powers with the hammer down…but still manage to shoot.

Archer is the only show/movie I have seen acknowledge what a gun going off next to your ear (or in a car) would do to you.

  8. Toastrider Says:

Oh, I love these. It’s like crappy movie physics games.

Actually, I heard the recent movie ‘John Wick’ did avoid the whole ‘endless ammo’ bit.

Still, my favorite gun trope is always:

  9. Sigivald Says:

One of the many things I appreciate about Archer is the way any explosion and most gunfire deafens everyone.

When tinnitus from guns being fired next to your ear is a running gag, you know you’re doing something right.

Aa long as it’s fiction, because otherwise that’s horrible.

It’s funny that Archer has more long-term damage to his hearing than his body from the numerous gun shot wounds he has taken.

  11. dustydog Says:

Movies need those gun sounds. Not everyone is paying attention. Having a gun make a stock ‘ready’ sound is like having a robot’s eyes turn red. Not realistic, but it is a necessary troupe to tell the audience that the robot has become evil.

Next you will be complaining that lasers in the vacuum of space wouldn’t make a laser sound, or that space ships in zero gravity don’t need to bank their turns or fight in 2 dimensions.

  12. Firehand Says:

The CSI episode where some guy fired a RPG from inside a van, and they could tell because ‘we found residue inside.’

Constantine, when the heroine draws her 4006 and you hear the four clicks of a single-action Colt being cocked.

  13. IllTemperedCur Says:

The Hollywood sound of a full-auto firearm when the mag runs dry.

“click click click click click click click click click click click click click”

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
