Guns in parks

The bill to revoke cities’ ability to ban gun in parks has advanced through the senate, 26-7. My state senator, Doug Overbey is once again showing us he’s not a friend to gun owners. He argued on the senate floor that guns shouldn’t be allowed anywhere children are present. You locals should contact him.

Not only that, but the Senate amended it into its’ present “We tried, but not this year” form:

The Leaf Chronicle over here in Clarksville is saying that there an amendment to the bill was passed 28-0 which also repeals the prohibition against carrying a gun in to the State capitol.

“Senate Democratic Caucus Chairman Jeff Yarbro, D-Nashville, offered the adopted amendment, a change to let people with handgun permits to take their guns into the statehouse. Gun control advocates say state lawmakers are hypocritical for letting people take their guns into bars, onto school property in their cars and into city parks but not to the state capitol.

“If we’re going to pass a law that requires local governments to have guns in their parks, we should apply the same standards to ourselves,” Yarbro said.

Although Republicans initially appeared ready to kill the amendment, they pulled back from killing it and voted 28-0 to approve the change.”

Local governments are NOT allowed to violate the Tennessee Constitution’s Declaration of Rights. In Article I, Section 26, the people of Tennessee have declared their RIGHT to keep and bear (which means carry) arms for self defense. The Legislature has only been delegsted power to “regulate the WEARING of arms with a view to prevent crime” which, for example, require that a sidearm be holstered, open or concealed, etc.

Once upon a time, true liberals defended the liberties of the people. These supposed ” liberals” should be asked what other enumerated liberties would they allow local governments to restrict or deny.

  4. Ken in NH Says:

So, he wants to limit carrying to strip clubs and bars?

  5. Matthew Carberry Says:

    “Where children are present”?

Like in every shopping mall, church, movie theater, grocery store, department store, neighborhood street, etc, etc, where the same.exact.children who will be in the parks are in the presence of the same.exact.carriers every single day?

It’s the same, utterly illogical, argument made by the “carry on college campuses” opponents: that some particular piece of dirt will make documentably innocuous carriers somehow more dangerous.

  6. Ron W Says:

Just like in the public schools, they want children and the armed adults who would voluntarily protect them relegated to gun free zones which aid and abet criminals bent on the murder of innocents. But they have elected officials and their agents surrounded by and protected by hired guns. Why is that??

  7. Sigivald Says:

He argued on the senate floor that guns shouldn’t be allowed anywhere children are present.

I trust he is, therefore, introducing a bill forcing policemen to disarm when they go into a place containing children?

  8. Crawler Says:

I think the proper rebuttal of Overbey’s ridiculous argument should have been that elected state representatives who conduct themselves like not-fully-educated children shouldn’t be allowed to argue on the senate floor.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
