This Nonviolent Stuff’ll Get You Killed: How Guns Made The Civil Rights Movement Possible

Well, the modern gun control movement was sparked by the Democrats’ fear of black people carrying guns in public. True, it was the Black Panthers but still.

I recall Dan Rather telling the story of being threatened by a gun-carrying redneck while reporting in the Deep South on civil rights.

Dan was surprised when his cameraman pulled a concealed handgun, put it to the redneck’s head, and convinced him it was time to go away, very possibly saving Dan’s life.

Dan was surprised, he said, because in earlier discussions Dan said everyone agreed to do the reporting without any weapons, because, well, because high moral ground or some such.

But Dan, honestly for once, stated he was glad his cameraman had ignored that stupid decision and done the right thing.

Kenneth still doesn’t know the frequency, though.

  3. Austrian Anarchy Says:

Angela Davis, in an interview around the time of her straw purchase trial, expounded on the right of people to be armed for self defense. She spoke at length about her father carrying a gun frequently (I think she said always, but I am not positive on that). See the “Black Power Mixtape” by those PBS Independent Lense folks for more.

Cobb was also interviewed on NPR: http://www.npr.org/2014/06/05/319072156/guns-kept-people-alive-during-the-civil-rights-movement

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
