Anti-Social Media

So, I went and saw Primus in concert earlier in the week. It was interesting. They’ve apparently put out a lot more albums since I last bought one and weren’t playing a lot of the old stuff. Even Claypool asked if the audience was pissed off because they hadn’t “played that beaver song yet”. I was only annoyed because there was no Tommy The Cat or Jerry Was a Race Car Driver. But this ain’t a post about that, it’s a post about this:

It’s a crappy cell phone photo of the guy in front of us watching the whole concert through a 2 inch screen instead of watching the concert. A friend I was with and I discussed it some and both of us were just amazed this guy would rather watch the show through a 2 inch screen as opposed to watching the show. But, hey, got get stuff on the bookface I guess.

Maybe he wasn’t there to see the concert, but to bootleg it?

It would make the Worst Bootleg Ever if that’s the case.

Did the feed provide closeups? It’s not like he’s getting the color commentary and play by play you miss if you don’t bring a transistor radio to the ball game.

I see a lot of people at concerts (in the standing area next to the stage) on their cell phones for most of the concert or trying to record the whole thing on a cell phone. It seems very odd to me that the in thing to do at a live concert it to call your friends and scream at them that you are at a concert…

I know a guy who like to video entire concerts, but he brings a fairly decent camera with high zoom HD, knows where to sit, how to stabilize it and has mastered how to deal with the 30 minute timeouts (Thanks EU!). He doesn’t try to do it on a phone.

    Just to be charitable…

I have a friend who’s nearly blind. They can see to arms length, but the stage would be a monochrome blur.

So a cell phone screen would let them actually SEE the show as opposed to listening to it being jostled by strangers.

I had the same thing happen last summer at the Rush concert in Cincy at Riverbend. Just makes 0 sense. Add this to the list as number 3489: Why I don’t go to rock concerts anymore.

Only went to see Rush because they’re my favorite band, and we never know if it’ll be our last chance to see them.

    Some people cannot sit still.

They play with their Iphones all the time, irrespective of where they are.

They chronicle the most mundane parts of their banal lives on FB.

They film everything from concerts to car races.

Saw them in Vegas and they played a bunch of the old stuff. Great show. I’ve long since given up on idiots with cell phones at concerts.

What surprised me was the amount of 40 year olds who apparently still wanted to mosh.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
