I always see this claim but rarely the actual threat
Anti-gun mouthpiece says they need guns because gun guys threaten them. If it’s true, then they have admitted defeat because, well, they get our point. But it’s probably not. I’ve often heard of these groups claiming threats, and I’m sure it does happen some times, but I never see the actual threats.

These “threats” are largely in their mind, and orders of magnitude less than the “death threats” we see from gun grabbers daily.

And when asked “Can we see the police report where you reported these threats?” it’s “We can’t talk about that. Now stop asking(or we’ll call this another threat).”

SPQR has it right, I think. This is projection, and I’d go so far as to say that they don’t even realize they’re doing it anymore.
I’ve seen it in online conversations with progressives on guns and various other issues–they’re violent and can barely control themselves, and they project this on opponents.
Happens in other places as well. Some of us with my church have been trying to hand out info at Abortion Clinics–not a typical protest, but an attempt to offer contact information so that they can get free care, free clothes, etc. etc. We keep being told that the clinic staff are scared shitless of us as if they think we’re going to storm the place–meanwhile, the only violence that has happened is the doctor swerving to hit a preacher with the side mirror on his truck. If he’s willing to do that, no wonder thinks the opposition might do the same or worse to him.

The main tactic here is to conflate gun ownership in general with crime. YOU are a gun owner, and some of the worst CRIMINALS are gun owners, and since you’re all in the same group (gun owners) you’re all essentially criminals, no matter how you try to massage it. Period.
It’s very simple, transparent and predictable.
