Knife Blogging

Tam has a post over at ShootingIllustrated with a handy tip. I’d never seen the wave before and found this video on how it works:

Slow motion at 0:36.

Cool, I thought. I must have one. So I ordered one here pretty cheap.

Cheaper than an Emerson for sure.

I’m surprised you had never seen that before. Emerson has offered them on most of their knives for years. I think they licensed Spyderco to add the wave feature within the last few years.

Check out Emerson’s site to see some great knives, albeit expensive – starting at the $200+ range. Out of all the knives I’ve owned, the Emersons held an edge longest.

I like the Voyager by Cold Steel.

Looks like a good way to cut yourself (or perhaps your pants). I prefer my “assisted opening” Leek, but to each their own..:-)

  4. Ryan Says:

Waved Delica is amazing. Adding a ziptie to a normal Spyderco or other knife with a hole is almost as good.

A few of us recommended a waved Delica/Endura to you a few years ago when you were looking for a good knife. See comments here: https://www.saysuncle.com/2011/12/15/knife-stuff-2/

Have to watch the video as I cannot envision any method of pocket extraction that would engage the blade with out some kind of flipping once the knife is open. I think I will give up a margin of speed for the control.

    Skullz,

I’ve been meaning to send my Commander back for a rebuild fo-eva now. I really need to go ‘head and do it.

It really is as simple as “pull the knife out of your pocket and it’s already locked open” with no wrist flicking or sleight-of-hand involved. Which is good, because I’m a klutz.

I EDC a CRKT M16-14ZSF. Same principle and they can be found online at half the price of the Spyderco.

  9. Tam Says:

I can’t get my M16 SF to do that reliably. 🙁

I’ve been doing a lot of reading/watching YouTube videos on ancient weaponry lately, and it strikes me as somewhat amusing that in 3000 or so years, some archeologist is going to dig one of those up and have absolutely no idea what that little notch is for. Perhaps they will think it’s for catching the blade of an opponent or something, similar to a sword breaker.

I’ve been rubbing my eyes and checking the calendar. Nope, this is not April 1st. Just because you saw a video on the internet, you think it’s a good idea to open a knife, with a sharp point, inside your front pants pocket? The knife still opens with a thumb flick when you have it all the way out. Under what circumstances do you want it faster than that, and how steady will your hand and nerves be in such an instance?

    P.S. Google “iliac”, “femoral”, bladder”.

  12. Hartley Says:

nk, I share your misgivings, though to be fair, the blade does (or is supposed to, anyway) open outside the pocket. To make it work, you have to press the body of the knife against the back of your pocket, causing the little hook to catch on the edge, camming the blade open – right along the side seam of your pants, and close to your side. When everything works right, it’s pretty slick – but I don’t feel like my manual dexterity is good enough (especially when I REALLY need it) to rely on it.
I’ve carried a one-handed knife approximately forever – as both a mountaineer and sailor, it’s sort of a requirement – and I’ve always preferred a knife that opened well away from my body (and body-connected equipment), preferably where I can see it if I want to – and it should open the same way every time, so you can do it without thinking about it.

  13. Mr Evilwrench Says:

I’ve been carrying a balisong for years and can have it open and on point in milliseconds. The worst thing that can happen is it gets unlatched, but it won’t poke you or anything. Now real switchblades are legal here. I wouldn’t carry the stiletto, but I have a little slider that I would carry. The spring is powerful enough to punch through paper, but it’s weak enough it won’t lock if you do that. It sure won’t stab you.

  14. nk Says:

Two more things. 1) You don’t have the element of surprise, anyway, because of the stupid pocket clip, if your reason is use in self-defense. The bad guy knows what you’re going for. 2) A backlock on the knife, like the knife pictured, does not allow you to close the knife one-handed, if one-handedness is what’s important. Get a liner lock or a button lock (I like the Gerber Bolt Action with a Flicket I installed) that you can manipulate with one hand and then fold the blade against your leg.

  15. Paul Says:

Well since in Texas I can carry a fixed bladed knife as long as the blade is below 5.5 inches….

I’d just carry my Blackjack made Jet Pilot in a IWB kyndex sheath. Fixed is better than folded any day. Has a 5.5 inch blade that can be honed a bit to make it a 5.48 inch blade.

Yes silly laws evoke transparent evasions.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_BPfMsBhpr6o/S2rnrN-7QUI/AAAAAAAAAYc/yy4bnTzIX00/s320/carry2.jpg The one on the right has a Flicket that presses on — unfortunately they don’t make them anymore. The stud for the one on the bottom is a bushing with a set screw.

  17. Paul Says:

Tam, I wear Wranglers or 511 cargo pants almost every day. They fit snug but not tight and I think that helps. I dont carry it when I am wearing loose fitting pants because the lever gets caught in the loose fabric on the larger pocket opening and also destroys the pocket where it engages. I removed the auto LAWKS system and backed off a hair or two on the fastener that holds the blade on. It stays well shut in the pocket but it deploys very smoothly.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
