Pick one

The M&P Shield comes with both a 7 and 8 round magazine. My S&W M&P9C came with two magazines. One fits flush to the gun and the other has an extension for a better grip. I prefer the flat one for concealed carry. I wish they’d just pick one type of magazine to ship with them. Seems like they just don’t quite know what to do so they do both.

I think the idea is to have you carry with the short mag in the gun, and carry the big mag for a reload. What’s really silly is when I bought my first handgun they did the same thing. I live in CA. Both mags hold the same amount of ammo.

  2. nk Says:

Well, do you know seven, or eight, people that you want to shoot?

Made a virtue of nessecity, in Chicago. Skinniest butt gun I could get.

  3. nk Says:

    I did not misspell “necessity”.

  4. Jay G. Says:

I had the same take as Nolan – the flush fit magazine is for carry, the extended capacity (why not 10, though?) for a back-up magazine.

  5. SayUncle Says:

But with the C, capacity is the same. And my spare is the 17 rounder anyway.

A magazine is mostly profit. If they send you two magazines you like, they lose money. If they send you two magazines you can live with because you didn’t try the other, they lose money. But sending two different magazines virtually guarantees you are going to buy at least one more mag.

  7. Jay G. Says:

Huh. Yeah, I guess that doesn’t make a lot of sense (the M&P9C). Mine came with two 10-rounders, but that’s because I live in the Volksrepublik (F**K YOU MITT ROMNEY).

The Ruger SR9C comes with one each as well – one flat, one extended – but at least they provide extra floorplates…

  8. Usagi Says:

Sounds like a marketing ploy to get us gun-owners to buy more accessories!

  9. Adam Says:

I wish the Shield shipped with a 10 rounder as a spare..

Different base plates a la 9c don’t seem like a big deal to me. Bases are cheap and easily found. Find the style that works best for you and convert the other one.

The different bodies a la Shield? Yes. Pick one. Let the aftermarket deal with the O^2 inventory logistics.

Old time Euro gun makers did this for there little guns. If you couldn’t hold the gun with the short mag, you used the long one. Spare mags were not normally carried.

  12. Mr Evilwrench Says:

I carry with a 12, and 0-2 14s for backup. I figure once I get to a mag change, concealment is no longer an issue,

  13. BenC Says:

I bought two extra with the finger extension and use the one without is my last resort magazine. The extension doesn’t really compromise concealment that much but the lack of it when shooting a 40 S&W makes a difference.

  14. Mike Says:

Personally, I’m glad that S&W give you one of each magazine. The M&P series work for a lot of people because of this feature and of course the interchangeable backstraps. I found that if you call them and ask sweetly they will ship you the finger extension bottom plate for one of your magazines for free.

I carry my M&P 40c with the extended grip magazine for better control — that’s what works for me. My reload is a full-sized magazine with a grip sleeve.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
