Spotting concealed weapons

An article from the San Francisco Chronicle on spotting concealed guns. Seems the criminal element is not inclined to use holsters.

Lookout he has an illegal gun! His coat isnt hanging evenly! Oh… its just his keys and a cell phone.

Lookout he has an illegal gun! He offered to greet me with his left hand! Oh… your a vet and lost the use of your right arm in battle.

I could go on but no benefit in beating a dead paranoid horse.

  2. Old Windways Says:

As paranoid and susceptible to false positives as these tips might be, increasing people’s level of awareness with regards to their surroundings is generally a good thing.

  3. Mr Evilwrench Says:

Hehe, they’d so miss me. Bad enough I use the wrong hand, but none of that stuff was even outside my normal behavior when I didn’t carry. How about people hiding legal weapons? They ever think of that?

  4. MattW Says:

I am all for situational awareness, but the tone and language used in the article is far from useful as a teaching aid. Focusing on things like “illegal concealed weapon” and the focus on normal behavior as an indicator of illegal and malicious activity discredit any intended usefulness. If the article took the approach of showing how a combination of behaviors and visual indicators should raise awareness and suggest avoidance, I wouldnt have had the same comments.

The only holster I’ve ever seen a bad guy use is an uncle mike’s clip on, and that was a rarity in of itself.

  6. Alan Says:

I learned early in my career that holsters are a sign of good guys.

Bad guys want to be able to ditch a gun at a moment’s notice (like during a foot chase) and be able to say “Not mine” when the cop finds it laying on the ground.
An empty holster is evidence I can use to tie the gun to the goblin.

Before FL passed the “shall issue” law, I found people with guns and no permits. The people with holsters were never criminals, and never got hassled, either.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
