Looks like Newt is going after Romney on guns. NRA Life Member, since 2006.

  2. one-eyed Jack Says:

So if you abide by the tough gun laws here in Ma you can own and carry whatever you want, right? Wait! It doesn’t appear to work both ways. Jack.

  3. Teke175 Says:

Hey mine is only since 2009.
I was a regular member for several years after buying my first firearm. I them upgraded to Life.

For some reason however I don’t think Mittens had the reason for deciding to join.

  4. John A Says:

I have read elsewhere that as Governor Romney said he would not sign more “gun control” bills – but also would not try to do away with, or even water-down, extant laws.

  5. Andy Says:

You would have read that over on the Pa gun blog, from bitter.

I really don’t think we have to worry about Romney, but rather Obama. Gingrich and Santorum failed to make ballot access in several states which will keep them from securing the total delegates needed to beat Romney. Those that voted for either are either casting protest votes, or have no clue that they cannot win. Secondly Romney cannot win without Ron Paul supporters of which will never vote for Romney, nor will the GOP ever allow Paul any semblance of a victory.

All we can hope for now is that Ginsberg stays healthy and is ready for another 4 years or we will not have to worry about a 2nd amendment at all. Amazing that the media is silent on the fact that Santorum and Gingrich cannot garner the delegates necessary, but perhaps it is simply to siphon votes from Paul, else he becomes relevant as the only conservative in the race.

  7. Ron W Says:

Of course, the media personalities who oversee the debates would never ask this. But I would like ANY Presidential candidate to be asked: (1) Do you support “the equal protection of the laws” of teh 14th Amendment? (2) if so, do you support that ALL gun laws apply equally to the people and ALL government officials and agents?

I submit that if such equality was enforced, then there would be repentance to armed self defense liberty for all.

  8. fucema Says:

“Rep. Paul is simply mistaken in his assertion; the Fort Hood incident should have been cited as a counter-example.”

That is incorrect. Ft Hood and other military bases are gun free zones, thanks to Bill Clinton.

  9. fucema Says:

As far as Romney goes, I do not trust a person who throws around the term “assault weapons” and freely declares that banning them is a good idea.

If Romney honestly thinks there is such a thing as an “assault weapon”, and that it can be banned for the safety of society, he is an idiot in regards to gun issues.

  10. MAJ Mike Says:

Meh! I’m an NRA Life Member since 1978.

All political critters need to be watched regardless of their organizational memberships. That’s what the 2nd Amendment is really about.

  11. Jeffrey H Says:

I am not a Romney Fan (Ron Paul Supporter here), but Newt might want to be careful or people may bring up the laws that passed under him as speaker of the house (Lautenberg amendment anyone?) I wouldn’t exactly say he has a good record on guns…

  12. Lyle Says:

Well I certainly hope that no one is surprised at Mitt’s stances on guns. I’ve heard next to nothing about it before, yet I could have written his position on demand and without a moment’s hesitation. Once you know a Progressive Republican, you know all Progressive Republicans. We know what Bush 41 did with his NRA membership, right?

Any you all know that the Progressive wing (i.e. the majority) of the GOP simply despises all this stupid and embarrassing “liberty” talk, right? And that Newt is right in there with them?

  13. mike Says:

Regarding Newt’s record, didn’t the Lautenberg amendment pass as part of a massive government appropriations bill funding the entire govt. I don’t think it was a stand alone vote in the House of Reps so it’s hard to blame him for that.

  14. AZ Fortune Cookie Says:

That first link irritates me. Claiming that numerous victims were armed soldiers, and that two of them fired at the shooter. And the source was Wikipedia?

The only people allowed to carry loaded firearms are people at the range and the MPs. And the medical centers are “gun-free.” I accidentally carried my (unloaded) M16 in one during mobilization (before this shooting occurred) and one of the (civilian) medics started screaming, “gun! gun! get out!”

Great defense, btw. If someone comes in with a gun, just yell, “gun, gun, get out!” at them.

  15. Andrew S Says:

Whoever wrote that first link is retarded. Hassan had no armed opposition (several unarmed soldiers died trying) until police officer Kimberly Munley made it to the scene and engaged him. Do a tiny bit of research before spouting off like a jackass.

  16. blounttruth Says:

Dont just knock Newt and Romney, Santorum voted with senators like Barbara Boxer and Frank Lautenberg to pass massive new federal gun control schemes and regulations. So it appears that only Ron Paul has once again 100% voting record for pro 2nd amendment. Also some more good news for the Paul campaign from yesterday.

Paul now polling 1st amongst GOP contenders to beat Obama. Not that the GOP wouldn’t support Obama over Paul, it is just another poll. People should also look into the GOP supporting the Democrat that ran against Paul in Texas last cycle, of course with a balanced budget in his town, he won his 12 term in a landslide after the GOP pumped millions into his democratic rivals campaign.

  17. Patrick Says:

We don’t need Romney are any other GOP nominee to be pro-gun, we just need them to look out for their political interest and stand aside while we push the Congress to fix our issues.

Any Republican will need some support from us. They don’t need to push on our behalf things like national carry, or NFA fixes or whatever else we need. We just need them to smile and sign the damn bill, or at least let it pass through.

People are doing the wrong math with the GOP candidates and guns. Gun owners need to be pushing Congressional critters (Senate and House) on gun issues – and just put anyone but Obama into the Executive. True, it would be nice to have someone with 2A lineage like Rick Perry or maybe even Ron Paul, but neither of those men will win this round.

So stop whining about those still competing. We just need to be sure that the Congress will put legislation on the desk of a President who will not veto it out of spite.

If you can credit Romney/Gingrich/Santorum with anything, it is that they will not piss off their voting base. If the Congress passes pro-gun bills, those men would sign them for no other reason than to keep the base happy to pass other things they want.

I honestly don’t think Romney cares about guns one way or the other. He does what his electorate wants. In MA that was maintain status quo and sound anti-gun. Today’s GOP requires he be an NRA lifer and sign our damn bills. Call it flip-flopping or call it “representative democracy” – it doesn’t matter.

Results matter. And all we need to do is look to Obama’s record and decide whether we like his version of results, or someone else’s.

Argue for your nominee, but when the time comes all gun owners will need to stand and deliver for “Anyone But Obama.”

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
