On Pocket Pistols
I don’t get The Outdoor Channel. But I was at my dad’s the other day and he does. We caught Michael Bane‘s show The Shooting Gallery with Ed Head on pocket pistols. I didn’t catch all of it but I noticed that all the filming of ed shooting the pocket pistol, he was using an outside the waistband holster. Just thought it odd.

There was a clip(not sure if it was that episode) where Ed Head demo’ed dual wielding and shooting 2 LCPs at the same time. Which, all due respect, was kind of clownshoes.

Au contraire, In pocket pistols as in most things in life, simple is better…a belt holster offers faster and more reliable access than any other carry method. I routinely carry my SR9c on my belt with an untucked shirt or even a t-shirt.
I just bought 2 belt holsters for small frame revolvers. Carry positions and methods vary wildly among individuals, and the IWB is hardly the panacea it’s presented as.
Having just spent days on the range working “draw fouls” and empty hand techniques against CCW firearms, I can pretty much give you chapter and verse on the weaknesses of each carry system and position! LOL!
And hey, Ed Head can do whatever he wants…

Before I get my usual flaying on the “tactical” forums, I meant,”empty hand techniques at close quarters against CCW holders…”

Well, if you’re a little chunky like me, inside the waistband is not very comfortable. A pocket holster works best me. I also have a belt holster but that only works when I can wear a jacket which not very often here in the south.

The nice thing about a pocket pistol is that, because of their small size, you can conceal them in so many places. Like Michael, I prefer outside the waist band with an untucked (usually Hawaiian) shirt. Easier to get to for me (like Harold, I’m a little chunky, lol) and I’ve never had anyone notice I was straped.

I wish I could get that channel…

NFO, that channel is awesome. I have a slew of recordings I’m behind on. The OWB is something I haven’t really thought about for my pocket popper. I am thinking about a Crossbreed for the wife, though.

A critical CCW point we’re concentrating on for TBD Season 4 is the necessity of a good one-hand draw…that means NOT using your “off” hand to pull up or rip away the concealing garment. That off hand needs to be available for empty hand defense if necessary, which means the off hand needs to be held high to protect the head (“command & control”) or to control a spouse, children etc. In a public sitation.
With pocket carry, which I use a lot, that means you MUST access the gun and “break” the holster MUCH sooner than you would with a belt holster.
Lots to think about…

I always kind of giggle at posts like this. You men with your big pockets…
Even with a “pocket” pistol, none of my pants have pockets big enough to fit one. Mind, I don’t think I’d go OWB with one, but someone like me is generally stuck with either a holster on the belt or in a purse…and while I *love* carrying that purse, it’s not necessarily the best option.

falnfenix,
It’s not just you. Even some of us guys prefer to wear clothes that aren’t deliberately baggy (read casual/”tactical” cargo pants) and/or actually fit properly and are current for the style in which they are designed (that means semi-fitted and no pleats for dress slacks and khakis for damn near a decade now).
I swear I don’t know how anyone pocket carries in modern, properly fitted, non-casual trousers and expects to draw from anything other than a stable standing erect stance, much less not print.
For what I wear every day I’m pretty much limited to the beltline or in outerwear pockets. I just vary the cover garment by the temp, or OC. Which is, admittedly, easier in AK than, say, AL, AZ or AR.

@Michael B.: I certainly see the logic in carrying an SR9c (which, after all, is a bit large for most pockets) in a belt holster, but belt carry for an LCP seems a tad silly. If one is going to carry a pistol in a belt holster, one need not be limited to a small-frame .380.
