You’re on your own

And only a few people realize that.

What Tam said. I carry the tools suited to look out for me and the people I care about. And those are for self-defense. Not an assault. I’m not the police. I’m not playing superhero.

I got my CHL because the first time I ever felt a need to have a gun, I knew nothing about the local gun laws or the best actions to take in my own self defense. I went ahead and took my legally-owned pistol with me anyway, and found out later I was legally OK doing so both in my manner of transporting it, and keeping it available for use had I needed it. Thankfully I did not need it, and have not needed it since.

However, now that I know a bit more about the legal and self defense issues involved, I have not had to change my behavior regarding my licensed, concealed handgun. I treat it as a tool, not a talisman. I keep it as available as I think it needs to be based upon individual situations, either on my person, in my vehicle, or at home.

I know for certain that given the choice I will avoid or retreat from a possibly violent confrontation if possible, based upon my prior personal behavior without a firearm in my possession, and everything I have learned since getting a CHL. I believe I could defend myself and others if necessary, using my handgun, but I know that I don’t ever want to have to do so.

“Nobody cares.” “You’re on your own.” I first heard those phrases out of the mouth of John Farnam years ago at my first gun course; they’re just as true today.

As far as the police go, in most cases, you probably are on your own while the incident is live. Most of them are severely lacking in that “fix the problem” area. Plus, as they constantly point out, “it’s just a job” to them. So, expecting useful help is wishful thinking where they are concerned. But, they can be very fast in looking for something to blame you for, if you survive.

Will, you have no idea what you’re talking about.

“Will, you have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Sounds like the pot calling the kettle black.

Will said “As far as the police go, in most cases, you probably are on your own while the incident is live” and the students at Virginia Tech on 4/16/2007 can attest to that.

I’ve thought about your post unk, and tam’s. A lot. So much I have this tardy response:

Your personal policy I have no problem with, But it’s just not the way I operate. I’m just keyed to march to the sound of the guns. It’s who I am.

I take responsiblity fo the outcome. It has nothing to do with being a hero. I’m just compelled to face evil, to stop it, To destroy it if necessary. And have faith that I will be granted confidence and wisdom in doing so.
There is a fellow here, who is now crippled. He was armed and had the dead cold drop on a mall shooter armd with an AK. He didn’t have the heart to act. He gave warning instead, and paid for he mistake. And so did others.
    I plan no such mistakes.

If I can make the difference, I am compelled to make the attempt. I couln’t live with myself if I didn’t.

Here in Tyler, Texas a few years ago, my friend Mark Wilson ran to the sound of the guns with a Colt .45 Commander as a guy outside his downtown apartment shot up the courthouse with a cheap AK clone. He’s remembered as a hero but he died and the other guy drove away. Mark loved life, women, downtown life, work. He’s gone because he unknowningly took cover behind the guys truck. He shot well but the fellow had on two layers of body armor. The guy actually didn’t have a plan to leave until Mark got him focused.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
