Why would anyone need a gun in a park?

Scoutmaster fatally stabbed on hiking trip.

And the scouts ban firearms for self-defense? I would not have thought that.

    Yup.

It’s one of the reasons why I had to walk away from BSA. They seem to have forgotten what it means to “Be Prepared”.

As I said when I submitted this tip, those of us Scouters with carry permits have to make the uncomfortable choice of obeying the BSA rules and possibly endangering our boys, or disobeying the rules and violating the Scout Law with respect to honesty. It’s tough to decide which is more dangerous – being defenseless in the woods with a group of youths or not being there to provide good role models for those same youths.

It’s a shame that BSA forces us to make such choices.

    These comments are sad.

I didn’t realize that the BSA had been co-opted by anti 2As.

    that article is horribly written.
“Scout leader Golitko”?? Golitko is the murderer, not the victim.

Lays of editorial oversight my ass.

I can see where the BSA has an issue with carrying, and that would be at any camp-type activity. No one is going to drag a safe into the woods, and how do you secure your weapon while you’re going swimming, take a shower or use the other facilities at night? Maybe they (correctly) assume not all kids are future eagle scouts who never would touch a gun lying around “’cause the scout leader said so”.

Ever hear of a cable lock? How about a nano-vault? Mine cost me $30. When I was in scouts, I don’t really recall carrying around bolt cutters, hack saws, or pry bars in the woods. If you can’t secure your weapon when it’s off your person, perhaps you shouldn’t own one. That line of thinking is a slippery slope, my friend.

    Mu-
    uhhh, “not sure if serious.”

I travel all the time with a small clamshell pistol safe that would work fine for use in a tent.

Thank the lawyers and insurance companies. It’s all about liability. BSA isn’t infested with anti-s, it’s infested with ‘safety nazis’. You should read the rest of what’s in the ‘Guide to Safe Scouting’ or as I called it ‘the Big Book of Boy Scouts Don’t’. Anything and everything that could remotely result in injury is forbidden, other than those things that are to strongly associated with scouting to be. IF they could prevent scouts from touching axes or knives, they would. As it is, even those activities are heavily crusted with “safety” precautions.

  9. RobertM Says:

Well, I know that the rule was violated by just about every adult I ever went Scouting with.

  10. Bill Says:

Goodness, Scouts can’t even carry fixed blade knives at this point, they may carry a pocket folding knife only.

Not the Boy Scouts I knew.

  11. Bob H Says:

In CA some councils have banned fires while camping. After all, burning wood causes global warming!

  12. Lyle Says:

It didn’t happen. You’re just being paranoid.

As an Eagle Scout (troop 388, Coral Gables, FL) this makes me a Sad Panda.

  14. Justthisguy Says:

@Bill: Dang, the best fixed-blade knife I ever had was one I bought at the Boy Scout section of the hardware store. It was good steel, with about a 6″ blade, and a nice leather sheath. I wore that knife on my belt on Boy Scout camping trips. Somebody stole it later.

  15. jason Says:

@Justthisguy: See? If fixed blade prohibition had been in effect when you were a scout, then some bad bad person wouldn’t have been able to steel if from you…and all of the children would have been safer!

@Rob K: It was my observation that the BSA started to lawyer up in the late 90’s, and things have gone downhill since. I’m not sure what the root cause of it was, but it’s a damned shame.

  16. Justthisguy Says:

@Jason: I think it was the homo thing.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
