Heh. Was stuck in memphis for the weekend and wandered about beale st. All of the restaurants are posted no guns. The thing that pissed me off was that most of the places were not posted at the door, but 2 to 3 windows away from the door, like they were trying to hide the sign. I had to walk back and forth in front of some places just to find the sign. Even the hooter’s had a gun-slash sign (which I took to mean no glocks, which luckily I had my XD), but none of the other required signage (so it didn’t count).

Anyways, I took my money elsewhere to a coffee shop that didn’t post.

My dad told me that back in the 1950s Memphis had a bad problem with liquor store robberies.

This was back when liquor licenses in Tn were very tightly controlled, which essentially resulted state-created and regulated monopoly.

This was the case until former Governor Ray Blanton started selling liquor license (and executive pardons) in the late 1970s.

Dad said that the small cadre of liquor store owners set up a “still watch” system which meant that each store had a man with a big gun behind the door leading to the stock room.

When an erstwhile robber would enter with his gun drawn, the still watch person would empty his gun into the robber.

The newspapers would show pictures of deceased robbers on the front page of their papers.

Dad said that in no time the robberies stopped altogether.

When I worked at a liquor store in Memphis in the early 1980s, we had a concealed Smith and Wesson 38 special under the counter.

    Uhhh…PT?
The law changed about a year ago.
Those “Circle with a slash” signs are now legally binding. Violating them is a misdemeanor.

Also the reason why all the restaurants on Beale are posted is because they have some sort of organization over there that acts like a homeowners association. They voted to make Beale St. Gun Free, so in order to not be fined you have to post.

    I just avoid Memphis alltogether.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
